Purport In thirukkOtiyUr with cool waters and rich fields all around; where servants of lord exist while those disobedient still abound; the head of pristine srivilliputtur thus speaks in poetic lines; By reciting these knowing the import, one shall remain within His confines!
fourth ten fifth thirumozhi
Summary periAzhwAr narrates in the following verses the fate of those who are not devotees of the Lord and as a consequence the insults, pains and suffering that they would undergo at the time of their death. Finally they would also suffer the dreaded punishment at the hands of Yama and his agents. On the other hand, AzhwAr assures those who faithully worship Lord nArAyaNA, that these sufferings will not be there and they would certainly attain Vaikuntam and serve the Lord for ever.

Purport Thoughts deeply attached to one's mother, father, son, land and dear wife with scented hair; one faints with eyes/mouth shut as death's near. kEsavaa! purushOththamaa! Oh, who took avatar as a faultless Boar! thus His devotees utter His names & worship; none can praise them more!
(2) seeyinaal seRindhERiya puNmEl* seRRalERik kuzhambirundhu* engum eeyinaal arippuNdu mayangi* ellai vaay senRu sErvadhan munnam* vaayinaal namO naaraNaa venRu* maththagath thidaik kaigaLaik kooppi* pOyinaal pinnai iththisaikku enRum* piNaik kodukkilum pOgavottaarE.
Purport wounds spread over, emitting puss; ants & flies creeping on them; causing itching, as the body lay dying; before that state can come; if one can say 'namO nArAyaNA' with folded hands raised above head; He goes to vaikuntam for sure & never again returns to this mortal shed.
(3) sOrvinaal poruL vaiththa dhuNdaagil* sollu sollenRu suRRum irundhu* aarvinavilum vaay thiRavaadhE*andha kaalam adaivadhan munnam* maarvam enbadhOr kOyil amaiththu*maadhavan ennum dheyvaththai naatti* aarvam enbadhOr poovida vallaarkku*aravathaNdaththil uyyalumaamE
Purport Relatives surround one who's weak, dying and voice choking; asking "where are your assets?". Before final days come knocking if one can worship making his heart a temple, mAdhavA its God, and his love as flower, can escape punishment from yama's squad.
(4) mEl ezhundhadhOr vaayuk kiLarndhu* mEl midaRRinai uLLezha vaangi* kaalum kaiyum vidhir vidhirththERik*kaNNuRakkam adhaavadhan munnam* moolamaagiya oRRai yezhuththai*moonRu maaththirai uLLezha vaangi* vElai vaNNanai mEvudhiraagil*viNNagaththinil mEvalumaamE.
Purport Breathing heavily, the heart sinks; the legs and hands tremble; eyes draw-in and finally close; one who chants before the body crumble; the single syllable mantra OM 3 seconds while inwardly drawing the air**; & meditate on the ocean-hued Lord, will attain paramapada* without a scare. *highest abode/Vaikunta **it's just figurative. The real technique has to be learned only from a guru/acharya.
(5) madi vazhi vandhu neer pulan sOra vaayil attiya kanjiyum meeNdE* kadai vazhi vaarak kaNdamadaippa* kaNNuRakkam adhaavadhan munnam* thodai vazhi ummai naaygaL kavaraa*soolaththaal ummaip paayvadhum seyyaar* idaivazhiyil neer kooRaiyum izhaveer*irudeekEsan enREththa valleerE.
Purport Peeing involuntarily; porridge which is fed into the mouth comes out from the side. Before the long sleep takes over, if only you've a clout with hrusheekEsA and worship Him, *dogs won't go after your thighs; *men won't pierce you with spear; don't lose your dress on the way, be wise! *all these cruel treatments meted out as punishment by yamA and his agents can be avoided if one surrenders to the Lord.
(6) angam vittavai aindhum agaRRi*aavi mookkinil sOdhiththa pinnai* sangam vittavar kaiyai maRiththu*paiyavE thalai saayppadhan munnam* vangam vittulavum kadaRpaLLi maayanai*madhusoodhananai maarbil thanga vittu vaiththu* aavadhOr karumam saadhippaarkku* enRum saadhikkalaamE.
Purport once the 5-praNAs* depart the body, relatives check the nose to confirm if the breath has stopped; not speaking, just shows hand, put head down & cry; Before this happens, keep the dark hued Lord in the heart,to serve Him always in His presence with gratitude. *prANa, apAna, vyAna, uThAna, samAna
(7) thennavan thamar seppamilaadhaar*sEvadhakkuvaar pOlap pugundhu* pinnum vankayiRRaal piNiththeRRi*pin munnaaga izhuppadhan munnam* innavan inaiyaan enRu solli*eNNi uLLaththu iruLaRa nOkki* mannavan madhusoodhana enbaar*vaanagaththu manRaadigaL thaamE.
Purport When yamA's agents arrive, they neither show compassion nor pity; tie men with rope like oxes; drag them & take them to their city*; But talking about His names & His pastimes, dispelling darkness of mind; one goes to vaikuntam & vie with the residents to serve the Lord in-kind. *yama loka
(8) koodik koodi uRRaargaL irundhu* kuRRam niRka naRRangaL paRaindhu* paadippaadi Or paadaiyil ittu*narippadaikku oru paagudam pOlE* kOdimoodi eduppadhan munnam*kowththuvamudaik gOvindhanOdu* koodiyaadiya uLLaththaraanaal* kuRippidam kadandhu uyyalumaamE
Purport when one dies, his kin gather to praise his good deeds; suppressing bad ones, many sing and dance; then proceeds with body covered in cloth, like food to the foxes. Ahead of this, if govindA had been praised & sung,one can give yamA's place a miss.
(9) vaayoru pakkam vaangi valippa*vaarndha neerk kuzhik kaNkaL mizhaRRa* thaay oru pakkam thandhai oru pakkam*thaaramum oru pakkam alaRRa* thee Oru pakkam sErvadhan munnam* sengaNmaalodum sikkena suRRa maay* oru pakkam niRka vallaarkku*aravathaNdaththil uyyalumaamE.
Purport As death nears, mouth pulls aside, eyes dig in & roll; father, mother and wife scream for the departed soul; Before the pyre is lit, if one looks upon red eyed Lord as kin; there's no need to be afraid of punishment from yamA for sin.
(10) seththup pOvadhOr pOdhu ninaindhu*seyyum seygaigaL dhEva piraanmEl* paththaraayiRandhaar peRum pERRai*paazhith thOL vishNu chiththan puththoorkkOn* siththam nan korungith thirumaalai*seydha maalai ivai paththum vallaar* siththam nan korungith thirumaal mEl*senRa sindhai peRuvar thaamE.
Purport Death brings agony to non-devotees and blessing to Lord's devotees; recalling thus, mighty Vishnu-chittan of Srivilliputtur compose these; A garland of ten pAsurams focussing on thirumaal with devotion; reciting these, one's mind will also get fixed on Lord with elation.

Summary periAzhwAr insists that parents should name their children after the Lord such as nArAyaNa, kEsavA, ThAmOTharA, gOvindA, which would then pave way for attaining mOkshA. He says that calling children by human names would not yield any benefit.

Purport Desirous of money, nice dress and some food grains; You keep unsafe names to your children; Oh, without brains! Instead, keep them sacred names of kEsavA and rejoice! parents don't enter hell calling names of nArAyaNA by choice!
(2) angoru kooRai araikku uduppadhan aasaiyaal mangiya maanida saadhiyin pEridum aadhar kaaL! sengaN nedumaal! sireedharaa! enRu azhaiththakkaal nangaikaaL! naaraNan tham annai narakam pukaaL.
Purport O Ladies! wanting to tie a saree around your waist; blindly you keep inferior human names without taste! Keep names of red eyed Lord, Sridhara to your kids; parents calling nArAyaNA's names open not hell's lids!
(3) uchchiyil eNNaiyum suttiyum vaLaiyum ugandhu echcham polindheerkaaL! enseyvaan piRar pEritteer? pichchai puk kaakilum empiraan thiru naamamE nachchumin naaraNan tham annai narakam pukaaL.
Purport Seeking oil, pendant, bangles for your children from others; you name your kids after them in return ! O poor mothers; Keep names of nArAyaNA even if it means begging for a living; parents won't enter hell by calling His names believing.
(4) maanida saadhiyil thOnRiRRu Ormaanida saadhiyai maanida saadhiyin pErittaal maRumaik killai vaanudai maadhavaa! gOvindhaa! enRu azhaith thakkaal naanudai naaraNan tham annai narakam pukaaL
Purport The one born of human race doesn't get release; if its just called by a human name as you please; parents naming children after the celestial Lord & call 'mAdhavA', 'gOvindhA', don't enter hell & fall.
(5) malamudaiy ooththaiyil thOnRiRRu Or mala vooththaiyai malamudaiy ooththaiyin pErittaal maRumaik killai kulamudaik gOvindhaa! gOvindhaa! enRu azhaith thakkaal nalamudai naaraNan tham annai narakam pukaaL.
Purport Giving a dirty name to the one born of a dirty body, one deserves only scorn; Parents calling cowherd clan Govinda's name; good nArAyaNa won't send them to hell & shame.
(6) naadum nakarum aRiya maanidap pErittu koodi azhungik kuzhiyil veezhndhu vazhukkaThE saadiRap paayndha thalaivaa! dhaamOdharaa! enRu naadumin naaraNan tham annai narakam pukaaL.
Purport Letting all in the town know, you join them; in naming children after mortals and perish, you dumb; 'Lord who kicked chakatAsurA'! 'dhAmOdharA'! thus calling after Him, parents don't fall into hell squalling!
(7) maNNil piRandhu maNNaakum maanidap pErittu angu eNNam onRu eNNiyirukkum yEzhai manisar kaaL! kaNNuk kiniya karumugil vaNNan naamamE naNNumin naaraNan tham annai narakam pukaaL.
Purport Made of earth, man takes birth and die on earth; still, fools name their kids after mortals, at birth; Name after Him, the dark-hued who's a feast for the eyes Parent choosing nArAyaNA's names, doesn't enter hell and fries.
(8) nambi nambi yenRu naattu maanidap pErittaal nambum pimbum ellaam naalu naaLil azhungippOm sem perun thaamaraik kaNNan pErittu azhaiththak kaal nambi kaaL! naaraNan tham annai narakam pukaaL.
Purport Don't give children country human names and call; they loose their sheen in just 4 days & look small; Parents naming children after the big-lotus-eyed & call nArAyaNA's names won't enter hell & get fried.
(9) ooththaik kuzhiyil amudham paayvadhu pOl ungaL mooththirap piLLaiyai enmugil vaNNan pErittu kOththuk kuzhaiththuk kuNaalam aadith thiriminO naaththagu naaraNan tham annai narakam pukaaL.
Purport Like pouring nectar into the dirty mouth's pit; name your kids after my cloud-hued Lord, that's fit; Rejoice with Him in ecstasy and dance in delight; parents don't enter hell, calling His names day & night.
(10) seeraNi maal thiru naamamE yidaththERRiya veeraNi tholpugazh vittuchiththan viriththa OraNi yoN thamizh onbathOdonRum vallavar pEraNi vaigunThaththu enRum pENi yirupparE.
Purport "Name & call children after sacred Lord" thus spoke the mighty & famed periAzhwAr for the record; those who learn these 10 pAsurams with a mind that's pure will secure a place in the celestial vaikuntam for sure.

Summary Great city 'kandam' (now called Devaprayag) situated on the banks of Ganges where emperumAn resides majestically, gets the attention of periAzhwAr. Enchanted by its beauty, he pens down ten pAsurams in praise of the city, the ganges and the Lord.
(1) thangaiyai mookkum thamaiyanaith thalaiyum thadindha em dhaasaradhipOy engum thanpukazh aavirundhu arasaaNda em purudOththamanirukkai gangai gangai yenRa vaasakaththaalE kaduvinai kaLaindhidu kiRkum gangaiyin karaimEl kaithozha ninRa kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport Cutting asunder the heads of rAvaNa & his sister's nose; the son of dasaratha, famed rAmA, my purushOththamA chose a holy place wherein just by calling 'ganga' sins get wiped out; is 'kaNdam' on the banks of ganges; a wonder city no doubt!
(2) salampodhi yudambin thazhalumizh pEzhvaaych chandhiran vengadhir anja malarndhezhun dhaNavu maNivaNNa vuruvin maal purudOththaman vaazhvu nalam thikazh sadaiyaan mudikkonRai malarum naaraNan paadhath thuzhaayum kalandhizhi punalaal pukar padu gangaik kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport Cool moon and the fiery Sun trembled in fear as they saw; the blue gem hued Lord grew high in the sky with awe; in the wonder city kandam where the ganges water gushes out streaming! touching thulasi on His feet & kondrai flower on Siva's head, gleaming!
(3) adhirmuka mudaiya valamburi kumizhththi azhalumizh aazhikoNdeRindhu angu edhirmuka vasurar thalaigaLai yidaRum em purudOththama nirukkai sadhumukan kaiyil sadhuppuyan thaaLil sankaran sadaiyinil thangi kadhirmuka maNikoNdizhi punal gangaik kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport With His rounded lips,He blew the fiery Valampuri conch; cut the heads of asuras with His blazing discus launch! Pausing at the hands of 4-faced Brahma,feet of 4-armed One & Siva's head, Ganga flows into kandam, the city worth a ton!
(4) imaiyavar iRumaandhirundh arasaaLa ERRuvan dhedhir porusEnai namapuram naNuka naandhakam visiRum nam purudOththaman nagar thaan imavandham thodangi irun kadalaLavum irukarai ulakiraith thaada kamaiyudaip perumaik gangaiyin karaimEl kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport when asuras attacked celestials who ruled with pride; He packed them off to hell with His sword, nAndagam, & chose to bide; in kandam, the city on the banks of ganga with its waters as sea across Himalayas and the big ocean, make bathers' sins flee
(5) uzhuvadhOr padaiyum ulakkaiyum villum oNsudaraazhiyum sangum mazhuvodu vaaLum padaikkala mudaiya maal purudOththaman vaazhvu ezhumaiyum koodi eeNdiya paavam iRaippozhu dhaLavinil ellaam kazhuvidum perumaik gangaiyin karaimEl kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport A plow, pounder, bow, glowing discus, conch, axe & sword; holding these as weapons, goes about purushOthamA the Lord; showering His grace in kandam the city on ganga's shore where sins of 7 births get burnt by the score!
(6) thalaippeydhu kumuRich chalampodhi mEgam salasala pozhindhidak kaNdu malaipperun kudaiyaal maRaiththavan madhurai maal purudOththaman vaazhvu alaippudaith thiraivaay arundhava munivar avapiradham kudain dhaada kalappaigaL kozhikkum gangaiyin karaimEl kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport When water laden clouds thundered loud bringing torrential rain; He lifted gOvardana Hill as umbrella to save all from the pain Lord of mathura, the purushOttamA resides in kandam, at the door of roaring ganga where tools left behind by yogis wash ashore.
(7) viRpidith thiRuththu vEzhaththai murukki mElirundhavan thalai saadi maRporu thezhap paayndhu araiyana yudhaiththa maal purudOththaman vaazhvu aRpudha mudaiya ayiraavadha madhamum avariLam padiyaroN saandhum kaRpaga malarum kalandhizhi gangaik kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport Breaking the bow, taming the elephant & toppling mahout's head; fighting wrestlers, trouncing kamsa, the purushOttamA chose His shed at kandam where Iravatha's musth, karpaga flowers & sandalwood paste of heavenly ladies mix and float in the river ganga in haste.
(8) thiraiporu kadalsoozh thiNmadhiL thuvarai vEndhuthan maiththunan maarkkaay arasinai yaviya arasinai yaruLum ari purudOththaman amarvu nirai nirai yaaga nediyana yoobam nirandharam ozhukkuvittu iraNdu karaipurai vELvip pugai kamazh gangai kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport Flanked by seas and strong walls, in Dwaraka He would; help pAndavAs, kill enemy kings, rid devotees' sins. He stood in kandam on the banks of ganga where long poles that bind cows would wash ashore & the good smoke from yajna blow one's mind!
(9) vadathisai madhurai saaLakkiraamam vaikundham thuvarai ayOththi idamudai vadhari yidavagai yudaiya em purudOththaman irukkai thadavarai yathirath tharaNi viNdidiyath thalaippaRRi kkaraimaram saadi kadalinaik kalangak kaduththizhi gangaik kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport mathurA in north, sALagirAm, vaikuntam, dwArakA, ayOdyA & the vast badarinath are His abode, yet purushOttamA chose and stood fast in kandam on the banks of ganga, where hills trembled, earth split; trees uprooted by the furious river even as the seas shook and quit.
(10) moonRezhuth thadhanai moonRezhuth thadhanaal moonRezhuth thaakki moonRezhuththai yEnRu koNdiruppaarkku irakkam nan gudaiya em purudOththama nirukkai moonRadi nimirththu moonRinil thOnRi moonRinil moonRuru vaanaan kaan thadam pozhilsoozh gangaiyin karaimEl kaNdamennum kadinagarE.
Purport Single syllable praNavA (OM) becomes three lettered word; while a & u, stands for loyalty & service to the Lord; the third letter ma shows atma is distinct from body. He gives His grace to followers of OM in kandam on the banks of ganga, a lovely place.
(11) pongoli gangaik karaimali kaNdaththu uRai purudOththaman adimEl vengali naliyaa villiputh thoorkkOn vittuchiththan virup puRRu thangiya anbaal seydhathamizh maalai thangiya naavudai yaarkku gangaiyil thirumaal kazhaliNaik keezhE kuLiththirundha kaNakkaamE.
Purport To the purushOttamA in kandam on the banks of ferocious splendor ganga, periAzhwAr of villiputtur lovingly did dedicate and render ten tamil pAsurams; those who recite these with faith & endeavor will get benefit of bathing in ganga & serve the Lord forever.
fouth ten eighth thirumozhi
Summary periAzhwAr eulogises Srirangam in these pAsurams. He says that the place had abundant pundits well versed in reciting Vedas. People were good-natured and looked after guests well. Cauvery flowed copiously, flowers bloomed and bees sang the praise of Lord. The Lord of Srirangam, who had accomplished great deeds through His avatars, showered His blessings on devotees
(1) maadhavaththOn puththiranpOy maRikadalvaay maaNdaanai Odhuviththa thakkaNaiyaa uruvuruvE koduththaanoor thOdhavaththith thUymaRaiyOr thuRaipadiyath thuLumbi engum pOdhil vaiththa thEnsoriyum punalarangam enbadhuvE.
Purport Diving into the ocean to rescue great sage sAnthIpiNi's dead son; and returning him alive as fees to the guru for the learning done; Place where vedic men dipped into cAuvEry wearing clean dry dress; causing lotus spew honey, is Srirangam that never fails to impress.
(2) piRappakaththE maaNdozhindha piLLaikaLai naalvaraiyum iRaippozhudhil koNarndhu koduththu oruppadiththa vuRaippanUr maRaipperundhee vaLarththiruppAr varuvirundhaiyaLiththiruppAr siRappudaiyamaRaiyavarvAzh thiruvarangamenbadhuvE.
Purport In a moment the Lord revived 4 sons who died soon after birth; and restored them alive to their parents; His chosen berth, where vedic men did rituals as prescribed & tended guests well is Srirangam where such great vedic scholars chose to dwell.
(3) marumakan than sandhadhiyai uyirmeettu maiththunanmAr urumakaththE veezhaamE kurumukamaayk kaaththaanoor thirumukamAych chengamalam thiruniRamAyk karunguvaLai porumukamaay ninRalarum punalarangam enbadhuvE.
Purport Brought back parikshit, son of His nephew abhimanyu, to life; Being a guru, saved pAndavAs from perishing in the great strife; Black lilies looking like His body & red-lotuses like His face; rub each other in the waters of Srirangam, His dwelling place!
(4) kUnthozhuththai sidhakuraippak kodiyavaL vAykkadiyasolkEttu eenReduththa thaayaraiyum iraachchiyamum aangozhiya kaanthoduththa neRipOkik kaNdakaraik kaLaindhAnUr thEnthoduththa malarchchOlaith thiruvarangam enbadhuvE.
Purport When the hunchback lady sounded off kaikEyI, who's cruel; Hearing her harsh words, forsaking mother & the right to rule; He went wandering in the woods; killing asurAs; He chose to stay in Srirangam where nectar-filled flower gardens lay all the way!
(5) peruvarangaL avaipaRRip pizhakudaiya iraavaNanai uruvarangap porudhazhiththu ivvulakinaik kaNpeRuththAnUr kuruvarumbakkOngalarak kuyilkoovumkuLir_pozhilsoozh thiruvarangam enbadhuvE en thirumaal sErvidamE.
Purport When rAvaNa secured rare boons & used them in evil ways Lord killed him in battle & saved this world from bad days; kurava tree shoots, kOndu ones shed flowers, cuckoos call; and gardens abound in Srirangam, the chosen place of thirumAl.
(6) keezhulakil asurarkaLaik kizhangirundhu kiLarAmE aazhividuththu avarudaiya karuvazhiththa azhippanUr thAzhaimadal Udurinchith thavaLavaNNap podiyaNindhu yaazhin isai vaNdinangaL aaLamvaikkum arangamE.
Purport With His Discus vanquishing asurAs from their roots, so that; none could resurface; He chose Srirangam to lie flat; where the bees, entering screwpine petals & their body smeared with white pollens, sing praises to Him, who's is revered.
(7) kozhuppudaiya sezhungurudhi kozhiththizhindhu kumizhththeRiya pizhakkudaiya asurarkaLaip piNambaduththa perumaanoor thazhuppariya sandhanangaL thadavaraivaay eerththukkoNdu thezhippudaiya kaavirivandhu adithozhum seerarangamE.
Purport The Lord brought death to the asurAs who did many wrongs; made their fat rich blood rush out like flood; He belongs to Srirangam where the uprooted sandalwood trees dragged by the cAuvEry, reached Lord's feet, to please.
(8) valleyiRRuk kEzhalumAy vALeyiRRuch chIyamumAy ellaiyillAth tharaNiyaiyum avuNanaiyum idandhAnUr elliyampOdhu irunchiRaivaNdu emperumAn kuNampAdi mallikai veNsangUdhum madhiLarangam enbadhuvE.
Purport As varAhA with strong tusks & nrusimhA with sharp tooth; lifted vast earth & hiraNyAkasibu; He shines as truth in walled Srirangam where, in twilight, bees with wide wings; resemble blowing jasmine-conch, sing His praise without strings.
(9) kunRaadu kozhumukilpOl kuvaLaikaL pOlkuraikadalpOl ninRaadu kaNamayilpOl niRamudaiya nedumaaloor kunRaadu pozhil nuzhaindhu kodiyidaiyAr mulaiyaNavi manRoodu thenRalumaam madhiLarangam enbadhuvE.
Purport His body's like dense cloud over a peak, like dark-blue lily; like roaring dark seas & like dancing peacocks; He stays really in walled Srirangam where breeze pass through mountain trees, the 4 streets & breasts of slim-waisted-women, as if to tease.
(10) paruvarangaL avaipaRRip padaiyaalith thezhundhAnai seruvarangap porudhazhiththa thiruvALan thiruppadhimEl thiruvarangath thamizhmAlai vittuchiththanviriththanakoNdu iruvarangam eriththaanai yEththavallaar adiyOmE.
