Purport The moment Arjuna prayed to Krishna "Lord! who holds the sword named Nandagam, I have surrendered to Your lotus feet. You have to protect me", He acted for the sake of Dhananjaya* causing fear in the minds of evil kings. Krishna, who drove Arjuna's chariot would come and embrace me from behind, the king among gods would embrace me from behind!

Purport Holding an umbrella in His hand, as an unparalleled dwarf Brahmachary, He sought three feet of land from king Mahabali and cleverly obtained all the worlds even as Kshatriya kings were watching. Possessing an auspicious body, Krishna would come and embrace me from behind, one who measured all the worlds as Trivikrama, would embrace me from behind!

Purport Standing over a defunct inverted mortar, Krishna would gorge to His fill all the sweet milk and butter stored in pots high above the ground. He would come and embrace me from behind, One who holds great discus in His hand, would embrace me from behind!

Purport Watched by the elders of the cowherd clan, worshiped by the Maharishis and praised by the Devas, He would play flute and dance standing on an old sand mound. He would then come and embrace me from behind, my lord would embrace me from behind!

Purport Krishna, who once immediately obliged His lover SatyabAmA's desire to have Karpaga* tree, from lord Indira's garden, by bringing it and planting in her moonlit courtyard, would come and embrace me from behind, lord of celestials would embrace me from behind!
(*Karpaga tree is a wish fulfilling heavenly tree, which can grant whatever one desires).

Summary Children often playfully make terrible facial expressions to frighten or suddenly appear from hiding to scare others. Little Krishna also plays this game with Yasoda and others around Him. AzhwAr captures in his mind this enthralling divine experience and shares it with us.

Purport Holding the celebrated great-sounding panchajanya conch in His left hand, blowing melodies with His good bamboo flute, Krishna who once stood by the Pandavas (when the latter was robbed of wealth by deceit and unfair gambling and denied even a limited share of 10 villages by the Duryodhana kings) and went as Pandavas' messenger, now comes playing the frightening game! He frightens!

Purport Vanquishing enemy kings such as Maharathar, whose strength was comparable to a mountain, pulverizing the hundred Duryodanas in the battle, making Arjuna's gandeeva bow bend as He sat in front on Arjuna's strong chariot and drove it praising Arjuna's valor, O! the red eyed Krishna now plays the frightening game! He frightens!

Purport Stirring the hot waters of the pond, climbing up the kadamba tree, jumping on the hood of the venomous snake Kaliyan and with the ankle-wear making sweet sounds, He danced on the snake's hood and played flute, O! now He plays the frightening game! He frightens!

Purport Born to Devaki in the middle of night, then migrating to Gokulam the same night, wiping out the fear of cowherd folk by killing evil Kamsa and on another occasion when the cowherd women were taking bath in the Yamuna river, He stole their beautiful silk sarees, O! naughty Krishna now He plays the frightening game! He frightens!

Purport Once, kicking with His small feet He destroyed chakatAsurA the demon who came rushing, disguised as a cart to kill Him. On another occasion, He got beaten up with a churning stick by Yasoda and wreathed in pain, for stealing ghee from the homes of cowherds. He made Yasoda to tie Him to the mortar. O! now He plays the frightening game! He frightens!

Purport Born to Devaki, the gem among women with breasts young and soft, He stole our ghee, milk and curd and gulped them to His stomach full, O! now He plays the frightening game! He frightens!

Purport Everyone was in astonishment as to whether Krishna was an adopted son of Yasoda or whether He was born to her. He was like a lion-cub of Yasoda, who was in sync with Him always. He adorned His beautiful black hairs with a bunch of flowers. One who, like a lion, wielded control over the cowherd clan, O! the lord now plays the frightening game! He frightens!
(8) kongai van kooni soRkondu kuvalayath thungak kariyum pariyumirAchchiyamum yengum baradhaRkaruLi vankAnadai angaNNanappoochi kaattukindraan ammanE! appoochchi kaattukindraan.
Purport Obeying the words of kooni, who had a hunch back like the shape of breast, He went to the dreaded forest granting His elephants, horses and kingdom to Bharatha. O! the beautiful eyed one, now plays the frightening game! He frightens! (Notes: In this pAsuram, AzhwAr equates Krishna with Rama, as he refers to an event that happened during the lord's incarnation as Rama)

Purport Once when a crocodile caught the leg of elephant Gajendra who was deeply troubled in not being able to offer flowers to the lord and started crying out loud as 'My lord Krishna, My lord Krishna', without wasting a moment, lord sat on His vehicle 'Garuda' and rushed from Vaikundam to remove the distress of elephant. O! the savior of devotees now plays the frightening game! He frightens!
(10) vallALilangai malangach charandhurandha viLLALanai vittuchchiththan viriththa soLLArndhavappoochchip pAda livaipaththum vaLLArpOy vaikundham manniyirupparE
Purport As Rama incarnate, He wielded the bow, rained arrows and destroyed Lanka, which was filled with valiant soldiers. The same lord now incarnated as Krishna and played the frightening game as expounded by Vishnu chitthan
(periAzhwAr) in the above pAsurams. Those who are able to learn and recite these ten pAsurams will finally reach Vaikundam and reside there permanently.

Summary Playful Krishna forgets to have breast milk from Yasoda. She fondly invites Krishna to come and have milk. She recalls Krishna's valorous deeds and His mischiefs.

It's late morning the next day, still your stomach is empty. Krishna, wake up and suck milk from me by placing Your beautiful mouth on my breasts and kicking with Your tiny legs.
(2) vaiththa neyyum kAyndha pAlum vadithayirum naRuveNNaiyum iththanaiyum peRRaRiyEn embirAn! nee piRandha pinnai eththanaiyum seyyap peRRAy Edhum seyyEn kadham padAdhE muththanaiya muRuvalseidhu mookkuRinji mulaiyuNAyE.
Purport After Your birth all the stocks of milk, curd, butter and ghee disappeared. I fail to recollect seeing these things, since You started consuming them as quickly as these were produced! I will not scold You. You can do whatever You wish. Come smiling and suck milk from my breasts to the full.
(3) thantham makkaLazhudhu sendrAl thAymArAvAr tharikka gillAr vandhu ninmEl poosal seyya vAzhavalla vAsudhEvA! undhai yArun thiRaththarallar unnai nAnondrurappa mAttEn nandhagOpanaNi siRuvA! nAn surandha mulaiyuNAyE.
Purport Krishna, You would beat up Your playmates, make them cry and enjoy watching them cry. The mothers of the affected boys would angrily come to me and report about Your wrong doings. Helpless I am, I can only say that neither your father disciplines You nor do I get angry at You! I plead You to come and suck milk from my breasts.
(4) kanjan thannAl puNarkkap patta kaLLach chagadu kalakkazhiya panjiyanna melladiyAl pAyndha pOdhu nondhidumendru anjinEn kAN amarar kOvE! Ayarkoottath thaLavandRAlO kanjanaiyun vanjanaiyAl valaip paduththAy! mulaiyuNAyE.
Purport Instigated by kamsa, when the wheeled demon
(ChakatAsurA) came rushing to kill You, You- the God of Gods- employed Your tender legs to decimate the demon. The whole cowherd clan was concerned to know if any harm had been done to Your legs because of kicking the demon. I was deeply worried too, but You tactfully went on to kill kamsa. I now plead You to come and suck milk from my breasts.

Purport I caution You, Krishna, the evil minded kamsa is lurking around to catch You any moment. I advise You not to venture out alone. If kamsa were to catch You then I may not live anymore. I plead You, the beacon light of Gokulam, to come and suck milk from my breasts.

Purport Having waist resembling a streak of lightning, with bees hovering over their flower bedecked hairs looking for honey, the women of Srivilliputhur, on seeing You would exclaim in wonder, O! what penance did I perform to beget You? I am grateful to You for making me praiseworthy. I now plead You to come and suck milk from my breasts.

Purport Seeing You, some women yearning to beget a child like You, would endlessly stand near You and watch over You. Some other women, with their flower bedecked hairs swarmed by bees in search of honey,would wait for an opportunity to take You away with them to taste the nectar flowing from Your sweet mouth. I plead O! Govinda, come and suck milk from my breasts.

Purport Chanura and mushtika, the demons resembling two mountains were burnt to death by the sheer terror created by You, O! Krishna, please come, sit on my lap and suck milk to your heart's fill from one of my breast while your hand fondle the other breast! Now, change positions and suck milk from my breasts!

Purport Once upon a time, You, the overlord fed the devas with the nectar to their stomach full! Now, due to constant play, the perspiration on Your lotus face resembles water droplets on a lotus flower! I plead You, O! Krishna, without dirtying your body, come and suck milk from my breasts!
(10) OdavOdak kiNkiNigaL olikku mOsaippANiyAlE pAdip pAdivarugindRAyaip paRpanAban endrirundhEn AdiyAdi yasaindha saindhittu adhanukkERRa kooththaiyAdi OdiyOdip pOyvidAdhE uththamA! nee mulaiyuNAyE
Purport As You ran, the ankle bells made musical sounds and as You walked swaying to the left and right, to the matching sounds of Your lotus feet, it looked like a perfect dance performance! For a moment, I thought that the lord Padmanabha Himself is coming before me! O! lord, do not run away from me; Please come and suck milk from my breasts!
(11) vAraNindha kongaiyAychchi mAdhavAvuNNendra mARRam neeraNindha kuvaLai Vasam nigazha nARum villipuththoor pAraNindha tholpugazhAn pattarbirAn pAdal vallAr seeraNindha sengaN mAlmEl sendra sindhai peRuvar thAmE.
Purport O! Maadhavaa, 'please come and suck milk from my breasts' were the words with which Yasoda invited Krishna and the related events were narrated by the renowned periAzhwAr of Srivilliputhur, a beautiful place surrounded by fragrant water bodies. Those who are able to recite these pAsurams with faith will be endowed with a mind devoted to the red eyed Lord Narayana, who always shines with auspicious qualities!

Summary It's a traditional practice in India to pierce the earlobes of babies, when they are very young, to be able to adorn them with ear rings, pendants and other ear ornaments. This is conducted as a religious ceremony. Yasoda tries to get this done for the slightly grown up Krishna. But, Krishna shrewdly avoids her, expressing fear that the procedure would cause Him pain! She persuades Him in various ways. periAzhwAr gathers these interesting moments for us in the following pAsurams and presents them with a devotional fervor. It may be noted here that the AzhwAr brings out the 12 thirunAmams (twelve auspicious names of the Lord) in the 12 pAsurams respectively.

Purport Your eminent father takes long time to return home. The evil minded Kamsa is lurking around in anger to catch You any moment. You look dizzy after sucking poisonous milk from Poothana, Lord kesavA ! all the cowherd women are present to witness your ear-boring ceremony. I am also ready with betel leaf and areca nuts.

Purport Never away from the minds of those who worship You, O nArAyaNa ! adorning the beautiful coral band on your waist, with the ankle bells tied to Your lotus like feet emitting lovely sounds, come here, my enchanting Lord! Let me thread your ear without causing you pain. These golden ear rings are looking very beautiful!

Purport Taking birth for the good of all worlds, you are like a tender twig of the cowherd clan. I have brought the priceless world renowned ear rings, having the shape of deep-sea-living-makara fish, for your ears. I will ensure threading without causing discomfort to your ears. I will give you whatever things you ask for! O mAdhavA! heart throb of young cowherd girls,come here!

Purport Look Krishna! these cowherd boys listen to their mother and have made their earlobes long. Look! how beautiful they are, wearing the colorful diamond studded earrings. O gOvindA! you don't listen to me. However, now if you wear these earrings, I will give you sweet jack fruits and make you suck my breasts filled with milk. My Lord! please come!

Purport My Lord, you don't come even after I beseech You. If you choose to come,after dancing ecstatically hand in hand with the girls, how can I take it as goodness?! I will give you enough big sized appams*, dark-curly- haired, bamboo-shouldered, darling of all hearts, O vishNu! come here!

Purport When I called you for the purpose of adorning your ears, instead of coming, you were busy eating the sand! As I checked your mouth, to my utter surprise and fear, you showed me all the worlds in it, making me conclude that You are indeed madhusoodhanA! There are no wounds in Your ears right now. You should tolerate a bit of pain in your ears as I insert the earrings. O You represent fullness ! You are like the dark cloud!, You are Ocean hued! protector of all the worlds! Krishna, please come and drink from my breasts!

Purport O You lifted Govardhana Hill to protect the cowherd people from the barrage of hail storms and rain! caretaker of Cows! You broke the great bow of Rudra! the head of Gokulam! O thrivikramA! Thus praising Him, Yasoda would slowly insert the earrings into His ears. But Krishna would notice the trick and pluck the earrings and throw them away in anger! Yasoda laments this act and tells Krishna thus: You are not to be blamed for this. It is my fault for not doing this (elongating your earlobes) when you were a young baby with unsteady head!

Purport Don't say it's my mistake, argues Krishna and continues: Out of affection, you chided and beat me in front of others for eating sand. Yasoda replies,: O my Lord vAmanA ! you have Garuda, the snake's bitter enemy, as the emblem of your flag. If we keep talking like this. your bore in the ears would get clogged up. O the remover of distress of your devotees, I shall not beat you, I promise.

Purport Krishna asks Yasoda, did you not tie me to the mortar in retribution, by believing the complaints of others about me as true? Yasoda replies, O srIdharA! don't stand afar smiling and rake up old issues. Your bore in the ears would get clogged up. Before these girls start making fun of You, please allow me to thread your ears!

Purport When you prick my ears, they would get swollen and pain me. Does this not attach a stigma to you and the girls, who make fun of me, asks Krishna. To this, Yasoda replies; O Krishna, I should have done this for you when you were a young baby, but I did not do so thinking that it could cause you headache. Is it not my fault? You killed ArishtAsurA who came in bull form, and VathsAsurA who came disguised as calf, hrushIkEsA, You are like my eyes, don't you see the boys in this area roaming with their earlobes elongated.

Purport Consuming with Your eyes, as it were, the bodily beauty of the cowherd girls who wears scented flowers on their hair locks, you always reside in their hearts and enjoy their company. O you are like nectar. I shall insert the earrings in your ears without causing You pain. O! You devastated chakatAsurA, padmanAbhA, come!
