30 YEARS SINCE THE ADOPTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA’S CONSTITUTION

Save the date: December 10, 2021; Iustinianus Primus Law Faculty, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, N. Macedonia

On 10th December, 2021, Faculty of Law " Iustinianus Primus", University " Ss. Cyril and Methodius" in Skopje, will celebrate the 30 Years since the adoption of the Republic of Macedonia's Constitution. On this occasion, our Faculty is announcing a Call for paper for the International Conference on topic “30 Years Since the Adoption of the Republic of Macedonia's Constitution”.

The Constitution of the sovereign and independent Republic of Macedonia was adopted on November 17th, 1991. The Assembly proclaimed the Constitution as the highest legal act of the state, which marked completion of a long historic process of building the Republic as a sovereign, independent, democratic and social state. The adoption of the Constitution marked the beginning of the new democratic constitutional order as well as establishment of a new specific form of parliamentary democracy.

30 years of Macedonian constitutional development is determined as a complex and dynamic period of institutional and political changes in the country.

So far, 36 amendments have been adopted, referring to a large number of the total of 134 articles of the Constitution. Most of the constitutional amendments were adopted after the 2001 armed conflict in the country as a result of the Ohrid Framework Agreement incorporation in the Constitution.

The conference will also shed a light on the post-socialist constitutionality and on the main characteristics of the new constitutions which were adopted after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The special emphasis will be given on the impact that democratic constitutions and constitutional practice of the European countries have had on the development of the Macedonian constitutionality.

The conference will aim to highlight all systematic and legal changes done in the state in the past 30 years of independence, all the positive and negative implications and conditions caused by the application of the Constitution and the constitutional amendments.

The Conference will create scientific space for presenting critical academic thinking based on scientific arguments.
