Summary

The book offers the readers an extensive material on the formation and development of stage-direction in the late 19th — early 20th centuries in Russia. This is the first work of Soviet scholars which treats stage-direction of the period as a specific type of artistic creation.

The authors of the book reveal social and aesthetic preconditions of the formation of Russian «director’ theatre», study the problem of theatre sinthesis, the director’s connection with the playwright, actor and scene designer. The problem is examined in the light of philosophical and aesthetic trends of the time.

The main part of the book is dedicated to the analysis of new ideas in the art of stage-direction practiced at the Moskow Art Theatre. Special attention is paid to some of Meyerhold’s experiments. The authors also show the artistic position of stage-director as dependent on the attitude of the artist to man and world as a whole.

The essays devoted to Komissarzhevsky, Tairov, Vakhtangov, Mardzha-nov contain valuable, material which helps to reveal the originality of their artistic work contradictions caused by the tense struggle between the realistic trend and modernism in theatrical life.

The authors try to prove that in the period under discussion stage-direction was recognised as the major component of creativity in the theatre. The authors believe the conclusion to be of the utmost importance to the problem of stage-direction at present.

The «Essays» were prepared by the Research Department of Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography. The authors of the book are well-known scholars of the Russian theatre: S. V. Vladimirov, Y. K. Gerasimov, P. P. Gromov, L. P. Klimova, M. N. Liubomudrov, Y. A. Smirnov-Nesvitsky.
