Examination Card №47I. Reading In 1886, the young Dr Arthur Conan Doyle developed some ideas for a story involving a brilliant detective first christened by the author as Sherringford Holmes. He was an eccentric fellow who lived at 22 Upper Baker Street with his friend Ormond Sacker. Later their names were changed into Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson. Conan Doyle had already published some short stories and articles and had been working on two other novels before he became interested in writing a really original detective novel. In this first story Conan Doyle tried to attract attention of the reading public to Sherlock Holmes - his strange habits, his brilliant analytical brain and his astounding deductions - but, despite this, the novella attracted little attention. However, John Marshall Stoddart, the managing editor of the American magazine Lippincott's, found the story interesting and offered Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde who was also invited for the dinner to write stories for the new magazine edition in England. II. Writing III. Speaking On the one hand, zoos aren't so bad as they are thought to be. In fact, in a lot of ways it's better for animals to live in the zoo than in the wild. Firstly, they've got plenty of food and water. Secondly, they are given a good medical care. Specially trained vets take care of animals. Thirdly, they are protected from hunters and other dangerous animals. On the other hand, animals are not free in the zoos. To start with, they are out of their usual natural habitat. Wild animals are supposed to live in wide open spaces, not in cages. Animals kept in zoos are not allowed to go where they want, and when they want. Also, they have to eat the food they are given, even if they don't want to eat it. Finally, animals that live in zoos lose their ability to provide themselves with the food they need and they won't be able to live in the wild any more. Luckily, people have started to look for alternative places to keep wild animals. The modern safari park is one of them. It is a better place for animals to live in. Animals live in the open space grounds not cages there. People travel through safari parks in special buses or cars. There are some rules which they must follow. Visitors are never allowed to open the car windows when they are passing through the places where wild animals such as giraffes, lions and tigers live free. They aren't also allowed to feed the animals. All in all, modern zoos and safari parks play a significant role in researching and conserving many species of animals. As we can't stop the development of modern civilization, we must think about the ways to save animals and birds for the future generations.
