TEXT 8

After Nityā nanda Prabhu, the greatest branch is Vī rabhadra Gosā ñ i, who also has innumerable branches and subbranches. It is not possible to describe them all.

PURPORT

... Ś rī la Bhaktisiddhā nta Sarasvatī Ṭ hā kura notes that since these three disciples belonged to different gotras, or dynasties, and also had different surnames and lived in different places, it is not possible to accept them as real sons of Vī rabhadra Gosā ñ i.

ANUBHĀ Ṣ YA:

…If all the three of them were known to belong to the same dynasty and to have resided in the same village, nobody could doubt their being the direct sons of Virabhadra Gosani.

TEXT 13

Two devotees of Lord Caitanya named Ś rī Rā madā sa and Gadā dhara dā sa always lived with Ś rī Vī rabhadra Gosā ñ i.

PURPORT

…The temple where Abhirā ma Ṭ hā kura worshiped has a very old history. The Deity in the temple is known as Gopī nā tha. There are many sevaita families living near the temple. It is said that Abhirā ma Ṭ hā kura had a whip and that whoever he touched with it would immediately become an elevated devotee of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a. Among his many disciples, Ś rī mā n Ś rī nivā sa Ā cā rya was the most famous and the most dear, but it is doubtful that he was his initiated disciple. ”

ANUBHĀ Ṣ YA:

…Inside the temple there is Sri Baladeva, Sri Madana-mohana (alone! ), on 1 1/4 cubit high and 1 cubit wide slab of touchstone there is vastra-harana-lila, a kadamba tree, Yamuna, and along with the cowherd boys a form of Sri Gopinatha engraved – these are the worshipable Deities. Then there is a murti of Abhirama Thakura dancing in ecstasy, and on the throne there is a murti of Sri Vraja-vallabha (the couple). Besides that there is also Sri Salagrama and Sri Gopala-murti.

… From the local sevaitas it is known that since the time of Abhirama Thakura it is a practice here that parboiled rice is being used for offerings but it remains bhoga until it is parched on hot sand. One more unprecedented practice here is that at the time of putting Thakura to rest, the temple doors remain open and he is being laid down in front of everyone’s eyes. At present there is no mangala arati for Thakura being held early in the mornings.

Presently there are priests living around at some 36-37 houses. It is said that inside the temple there is an iron chest in which the famous Abhirama’s whip „Sri-jaya-mangala“ is being kept by the priests under a lock. It is 2 cubits long and wrapped with a silver (or golden) thread. At the time of big festivals all the priests agree to take the whip out of the chest. In the Bhakti-ratna-kara (the 4th wave) it is written about the whip that whoever was hit by it by Abhirama Thakura, that person’s love of Krsna awoke. (oi cabuk diya obhiram thakur yahake aghat koriten, tahar-i krsno-premer udoe hoito. ) Once Srinivasa Acarya came to Abhirama’s residence, and Abhirama Thakura touched his body with the whip three times. Then Abhirama’s wife, the brahminical daughter Malini-devi, took Thakura by the hand and smilingly said, „Cool down, Thakura, Srinivasa is a greenhorn, if you keep touching him with your whip, he will lose his composure. “(! )

... (Srinivasa Acarya was very dear to Abhirama, an object of his love and mercy, nevertheless he was probably not initiated by him, and thus he is counted as his half-disciple. )

TEXTS 14–15

When Nityā nanda Prabhu was ordered to go to Bengal to preach, these two devotees [Ś rī Rā madā sa and Gadā dhara dā sa] were ordered to go with Him. Thus they are sometimes counted among the devotees of Lord Caitanya and sometimes among the devotees of Lord Nityā nanda. Similarly, Mā dhava Ghoṣ a and Vā sudeva Ghoṣ a belonged to both groups of devotees simultaneously.

ANUBHĀ Ṣ YA:

…In the anthology of Vasughosa’s songs there are many Gaura-nagari songs inserted for the gratification of the prakrta-sahajiyas’ sense; but actually these songs are not and can never be songs written by vipralambha-rasika Gaura-bhakta Vasughosa. Any sadhaka will reject them. (! )

TEXT 24

Kamalā kara Pippalā i is said to have been the third gopā la. His behavior and love of Godhead were uncommon, and thus he is celebrated all over the world.

PURPORT

…The Jagannā tha Deity at Mā heś a in Ś rī Rā mapura was installed by Kamalā kara Pippalā i. This village of Mā heś a is situated about two and a half miles from the Ś rī Rā mapura railway station. … Kamalā kara Pippalā i had a son named Caturbhuja, who had two sons named Nā rā yaṇ a and Jagannā tha. Nā rā yaṇ a had one son named Jagadā nanda, and his son’s name was Rā jī valocana. During the time of Rā jī valocana, there was a scarcity of finances for the worship of the Jagannā tha Deity, and it is said that the Nawab of Dacca, whose name was Shah Sujā, donated 1, 185 bighā s of land [about 395 acres] in the Bengali year 1060 [A. D. 1653]. The land being the possession of Jagannā tha, the village was named Jagannā tha-pura… (? )

ANUBHĀ Ṣ YA:

…This land is situated almost 5 km to the West from Mahesa, in the village called Jagannatha-pura. The village got its name according to the Deity of Jagannatha.

TEXT 25

Sū ryadā sa Sarakhela and his younger brother Kṛ ṣ ṇ adā sa Sarakhela both possessed firm faith in Nityā nanda Prabhu. They were a reservoir of love of Godhead.

Their father, Surya-dasa, had previously been Maharaja Kakudmi. His bodily luster made him as effulgent as the sun. ”
