TEXT 16

If one is infested with the ten offenses in the chanting of the Hare Kṛ ṣ ṇ a mahā -mantra, despite his endeavor to chant the holy name for many births, he will not get the love of Godhead that is the ultimate goal of this chanting.

Anubh.: The verse from the Padma Purā ṇ a, included in the Hari-bhakti-vilā sa (11. 289), states:

nā maikam yasya vā ci smaraṇ a-patha-gatam ś rotra-mū lam gatam vā

ś uddham vā ś uddha-varṇ am vyavahita-rahitam tā rayaty eva satyam

tac ced deha-draviṇ a-janatā -lobha-pā saṇ da-madhye

niksiptam syā n na phala-janakam ś ī ghram evā tra vipra

[“If a devotee once utters the holy name of the Lord, or if it penetrates his mind or enters his ear, which is the channel of aural reception, that holy name will certainly deliver him from material bondage, whether vibrated properly or improperly, with correct or incorrect grammar, or properly joined or vibrated in separate parts. O brā hmaṇ a, the potency of the holy name is therefore certainly great. However, if one uses the vibration of the holy name for the benefit of the material body, for material wealth and followers, or under the influence of greed or atheism—in other words, if one utters the name with offenses—such chanting will not produce the desired result very soon. Therefore one should diligently avoid offenses in chanting the holy name of the Lord. ”] …

TEXT 17

“By cultivating philosophical knowledge one can understand his spiritual position and thus be liberated, and by performing sacrifices and pious activities one can achieve sense gratification in a higher planetary system, but the devotional service of the Lord is so rare that even by executing hundreds and thousands of such sacrifices one cannot obtain it. ”

A. -pr. -bh.: By cultivating knowledge one can easily attain liberation, by performing sacrifices and other pious activities one can achieve sense gratification in a higher planetary system; but even by innumerable regulated spiritual practices one cannot easily obtain devotional service to the Lord. The purport is that along with the regulated spiritual practice (sadhana) there are some other processes (suddho-bhakter dasyo, service to a pure devotee, and sambandha-jnana) by accepting which one obtains devotional service.

TEXT 20

Lord Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu has freely given this love of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a everywhere and anywhere, even to the most fallen, such as Jagā i and Mā dhā i. What then to speak of those who are already pious and elevated?

Purp.: …Lord Caitanya Mahā prabhu delivered the two fallen brothers Jagā i and Mā dhā i, but the entire world is presently full of Jagā is and Mā dhā is, or, in other words, woman-hunters, meat-eaters, gamblers, thieves and other rogues, who create all kinds of disturbances in society. … Considering the chaotic condition of human society, if one actually wants peace and tranquillity, one must take to the Kṛ ṣ ṇ a consciousness movement and engage always in bhā gavata-dharma. Engagement in bhā gavata-dharma dissipates all ignorance and passion, and when ignorance and passion are dissipated one is freed from greed and lust. When freed from greed and lust, one becomes brahminically qualified, and when a brahminically qualified person makes further advancement, he becomes situated on the Vaiṣ ṇ ava platform. It is only on this Vaiṣ ṇ ava platform that it is possible to awaken one’s dormant love of Godhead, and as soon as one does so, his life is successful…

Anubh.: Even those who are sinful and addicted to perverted activities like Jagai and Madhai will attain love of Krsna one day, if they receive the mercy of Lord Gaura and give up their sinful and perverted behavior.

TEXTS 21-22

Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, is fully independent. Therefore, although it is the most confidentially stored benediction, He can distribute love of Godhead to anyone and everyone without consideration.

Whether he is offensive or inoffensive, anyone who even now chants ś rī -kṛ ṣ ṇ a-caitanya prabhu-nityā nanda is immediately overwhelmed with ecstasy, and tears fill his eyes.

Purp. (to text 21): This is the benefit of Lord Caitanya’s movement. If one somehow or other comes in contact with the Hare Kṛ ṣ ṇ a movement, without consideration of his being a ś ū dra, vaiś ya, Jagā i, Mā dhā i or even lower, he becomes advanced in spiritual consciousness and immediately develops love of Godhead. We now have actual experience that throughout the entire world this movement is making many such persons lovers of God simply by the chanting of the Hare Kṛ ṣ ṇ a mahā -mantra. Actually, Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu has appeared as the spiritual master of the entire world. He does not discriminate between offenders and the innocent. Kṛ ṣ ṇ a-prema-pradā ya te: He liberally gives love of Godhead to anyone and everyone. ...

A. -pr. -bh.: One extraordinary feature of Sri Caitanya’s incarnation is that whoever comes in contact with Him, to that person He gives the confidentially stored love of Godhead without considering whether one is eligible to receive it or not, because He is the fully independent Lord. ... Whether one is an offender or inncent, if he calls Him in a self-surrender “he gauranga! he krsna-caitanya! ”, he will become overwhelmed with love of Krsna, with hairs standing on end and shedding tears of ecstasy.

TEXT 24

There are offenses to be considered while chanting the Hare Kṛ ṣ ṇ a mantra. Therefore simply by chanting Hare Kṛ ṣ ṇ a one does not become ecstatic.

A. -pr. -bh.: The ten offenses against the holy name are described in the Padma Purana … (see the detailed description in Anubh. [and Purp. ]) If one continues in commiting these ten offenses, Krsna does not give him His mercy. Such offenders cannot experience the ecstatic symptoms like sattvika-vikara.

Anubh.: …(7) If one thinks that he can commit sinful activities on the strength of chanting the holy name, then all the artificial yoga processes like following many rules and regulations or collecting wealth etc. shall certainly not purify such an offender.

TEXT 26

Simply chanting the Hare Kṛ ṣ ṇ a mahā -mantra without offenses vanquishes all sinful activities. Thus pure devotional service, which is the cause of love of Godhead, becomes manifest.

A. -pr. -bh.: That sadhana-bhakti, which gives rise to love of Godhead, becomes manifest.

TEXT 31

But if one only chants, with some slight faith, the holy names of Lord Caitanya and Nityā nanda, very quickly he is cleansed of all offenses. Thus as soon as he chants the Hare Kṛ ṣ ṇ a mahā -mantra, he feels the ecstasy of love for God.

Anubh.: …Sri Gaura-Nityananda are magnanimous, and in Their magnanimity sweetness is included. Krsna is kind only to liberated, perfect and surrendered persons; in the stream of Gaura-Nityananda’s magnanimity an offender full of anarthas becomes free from the clutches of his offenses based on sense enjoyment and attains the lotus feet of Gaura-Krsna.

TEXT 33

O fools, just read Ś rī Caitanya-maṅ gala! By reading this book you can understand all the glories of Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu.

A. -pr. -bh.: Caitanya-maṅ gala = Ś rī Caitanya-bhā gavata written by Ś rī la Vṛ ndā vana dā sa Ṭ hā kura, a resident of Denuḍ a within the jurisdiction of the police station of Mantreś vara in the district of Burdwan...

TEXT 34

As Vyā sadeva has compiled all the pastimes of Lord Kṛ ṣ ṇ a in Ś rī mad-Bhā gavatam, Ṭ hā kura Vṛ ndā vana dā sa has depicted the pastimes of Lord Caitanya.

Anubh.: See “The Biography of Vṛ ndā vana dā sa Ṭ hā kura” (thakurer jivoni) in the introduction to the Bhasya’s author’s edition of Ś rī Caitanya-bhā gavata.

TEXT 36

By reading Ś rī Caitanya-maṅ gala one can understand all the glories and truths of Lord Caitanya and Nityā nanda and come to the ultimate conclusion of devotional service to Lord Kṛ ṣ ṇ a.

Purp.: …Under these circumstances, it is a great aid for the common man to read Ś rī la Vṛ ndā vana dā sa Ṭ hā kura’s Caitanya-bhā gavata, for thus he can actually understand devotional service, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, Lord Caitanya and Nityā nanda. Ś rī la Rū pa Gosvā mī has said:

ś ruti-smṛ ti-purā ṇ ā di-pañ carā tra-vidhiṁ vinā

aikā ntikī harer bhaktir utpā tā yaiva kalpate

“Devotional service to the Lord that ignores the authorized Vedic literatures—the Upaniṣ ads, Purā ṇ as, Nā rada-pañ carā tra, etc. —is simply an unnecessary disturbance in society. ” Due to misunderstanding Ś rī mad-Bhā gavatam, people are misled regarding the science of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a. However, by reading Ś rī la Vṛ ndā vana dā sa Ṭ hā kura’s book one can very easily understand this science.

Anubh.: . .. Those who know the conclusions regarding devotional service to Krsna are easily able to understand the glories of Sri Nitai-Gaura. All the scriptures dealing with bhakti state that bhakti-devi cannot be served without understanding the bhakti-siddhanta.
