Variation. A test of us. Set it up. Let it run. Round it off. Variation. Matchbox magic. Set it up

Variation

After writing down their three choices, people keep their own slip of paper and mingle, trying to find someone whose choices are similar or at least compatible with their own – so they can share the desert island! They can ask questions like: What would you like to eat? etc., until they find the person with the most suitable matches.

A test of us

Set it up

In the last lesson of the week, or equivalent, tell people they are going to contribute to a quiz on that week’s lessons by asking the questions themselves. But instead of questions explicitly about language points, they will be asking questions about each other’s week, based on what has been shared in class.

Let it run

• In groups, people write five quiz questions based on events involving members of the class that have been shared that week. For example: Why did Federica get upset with her landlady?

• They show these questions to you and you suggest any improvements, as appropriate.

• Meanwhile, you write some questions of your own.

Round it off

Each group asks the rest of the class their questions.

Variation

Instead of questions for each other, tell the class to devise questions for you. Give them ten minutes for this and leave the room while they are preparing the quiz. Alternatively, the class write questions that are directly about language. You can encourage them to use ‘testing’ types they will encounter in examinations, such as gapped sentences and multiple-choice questions.

Matchbox magic

Set it up

Pass the matchbox round the class. Ask each person to look inside, without showing anyone else, and to write down the first thing that they associate with that object on a Post-it® note or slip of paper.
