Round it off. Think about it. Where I’d rather be. Set it up. Let it run. Round it off

Round it off

Sitting down again, in open class, people interview the same person about their choices - effectively repeating the conversation they have just had, but including any language you have supplied.

Think about it

However much we enjoy teaching or learning, it’s just possible that school wouldn’t be our first choice of place to be on any given day. Using a simple framework can help people to articulate the alternatives.

Where I’d rather be

Set it up

Draw a triangle on the board like the one below and write at each point the following questions:

Where would you rather be?

Who would you rather be with?

What would you rather be doing?

Invite the class to ask you these questions, and ask someone to note your answers on the board as you go. Answer any further questions they may have, refining the language and writing on the board any useful question structures that emerge, such as:

Who’s/Where’s/What’s that?

Why would you rather be with him/her?

Why would you rather be there/doing that?

Let it run

• People draw their own triangles, writing one or twoword answers to the questions.

• Working in pairs or groups of three, people look at each other’s triangles and ask questions about them.

• You circulate, encouraging and helping with language.

Round it off

Ask different people to report to the class any particularly interesting information they learned. Tell people to work in pairs to suggest something else that the whole class might enjoy doing. Take in the answers, read them out to the class and discuss the alternatives.

Finally, everyone writes down their favourite. You count up the votes and announce the winner.
