 “May the Supreme Lord who is known as the son of Ś rī matī Ś acī -devī be transcendentally situated in the innermost core of your heart. Resplendent with the radiance of molten gold, He has descended in the Age of Kali by His causeless mercy to bestow what no incarnation has ever offered before: the most elevated mellow of devotional service, the mellow of conjugal love. ”

 

Anubh.: Just as Ś rī la Rū pa Gosvā mī invoked auspiciousness by this verse in the beginning of his Vidagdha-mā dhava drama (after having first offered his benedictions to the world), the author as his follower also expressed his intention to follow in the footsteps of his guru…

 

TEXT 5

Lord Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, the son of the King of Vraja, is the Supreme Lord. He eternally enjoys transcendental pastimes in His eternal abode, Goloka, which includes Vrajadhā ma.

 

Purp.: In the previous chapter it has been established that Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, the son of Vrajendra (the King of Vraja), is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, with six opulences. He eternally enjoys transcendentally variegated opulences on His planet, which is known as Goloka. The eternal pastimes of the Lord in the spiritual planet Kṛ ṣ ṇ aloka are called aprakaṭ a, …

 

A. -pr. -bh.: That Vrajendra-kumā ra Kṛ ṣ ṇ a who was established in the last chapter as the Supreme Lord in full (pū rṇ a bhagavā n) performs His eternal pastimes with all the paraphernalia providing the moods of Vraja in Goloka, with the opulences of Gokula. These are called unmanifested (aprakaṭ a) pastimes. They are covered in the material world but in each kalpa, or once in every day of Brahmā, He makes the pastimes manifested (prakaṭ a).

 

 

TEXTS 7-8

We know that there are four ages [yugas], namely Satya, Tretā, Dvā para and Kali. These four together constitute one divya-yuga.

Seventy-one divya-yugas constitute one manv-antara. There are fourteen manv-antaras in one day of Brahmā.

 

Purp.: A manv-antara is the period controlled by one Manu. The reign of fourteen Manus equals the length of one day (twelve hours) in the life of Brahmā, and the night of Brahmā is of the same duration. These calculations are given in the authentic astronomy book known as the Sū rya-siddhā nta…

 

Anubh.: Kali-yuga lasts for 432 000 solar years. Dvā para lasts twice the number of years of Kali-yuga’s duration, Tretā thrice, and Satya four times the number. Therefore Satya, Tretā, Dvā para and Kali altogether last for 4 320 000 solar years. This mahā -yuga is also called divya-yuga. 71 of such mahā -yugas constitute one manvantara, 14 manvantaras plus the transition period measured as the time of the 15th Satya-yuga make up for the thousand yugas of Brahmā ’s one day, or kalpa.

TEXT 11

Servitude [dā sya], friendship [sakhya], parental affection [vā tsalya] and conjugal love [ś ṛ ṅ gā ra] are the four transcendental mellows [rasas]. By the devotees who cherish these four mellows, Lord Kṛ ṣ ṇ a is subdued.

TEXT 47

Recording all these qualities of Lord Caitanya, the sage Vaiś ampā yana included His name in the Viṣ ṇ u-sahasra-nā ma.

 

Anubh.: Viṣ ṇ u-sahasra-nā ma is chapter 149 of the Mahā bhā rata, Dā na-dharma. Ś aṅ karā cā rya, as well asŚ rī la Baladeva Vidyā bhū ṣ aṇ a and several other Vaiṣ ṇ ava ā cā ryas wrote commentaries on this book.

 

 

TEXT 48

dui lī lā caitanyera——ā di ā ra ś eṣ a

dui lī lā ya cā ri cā ri nā ma viś eṣ a

 

The pastimes of Lord Caitanya have two divisions—the early pastimes [ā di-lī lā ] and the later pastimes [ś eṣ a-lī lā ]. He has four names in each of these two lī lā s.

 

Anubh.: ā di — gā rhasthya-lī lā (the first 24 years), ś eṣ a — sannyā sa-lī lā (the final 24 years). See texts 32-34. The two sets of four names are described in the text 49. TEXT 74

nityā nanda gosā ñ i sā kṣ ā t haladhara

advaita ā cā rya gosā ñ i sā kṣ ā t ī ś vara

 

Ś rī Nityā nanda Gosā ñ i is directly Haladhara [Lord Balarā ma], and Advaita Ā cā rya is the Personality of Godhead Himself.

 

A. -pr. -bh.: arthā t tini sā kṣ ā t mahā -viṣ ṇ ura avatā ra [= That means He is directly an incarnation of Mahā -viṣ ṇ u. ]

 

 

TEXTS 104-108

 “Ś rī Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, who is very affectionate toward His devotees, sells Himself to a devotee who offers Him merely a tulasī leaf and a palmful of water. ”

Advaita Ā cā rya considered the meaning of the verse in this way: “Not finding any way to repay the debt He owes to one who offers Him a tulasī leaf and water, Lord Kṛ ṣ ṇ a thinks, ‘There is no wealth in My possession that is equal to a tulasī leaf and water. ’

 “Thus the Lord liquidates the debt by offering Himself to the devotee. ” Considering in this way, the Ā cā rya began worshiping the Lord.

Thinking of the lotus feet of Ś rī Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, He constantly offered tulasī buds in water from the Ganges.

 

A. -pr. -bh.: In some readings, these two verses can be seen:

 

sā grajaṁ tulasī -patraṁ dvi-dalaṁ kṣ udram eva ca

mañ jarī sā tu vikhyā tā praś astā kṛ ṣ ṇ a-pū jane

yathā rā dhā priyā viṣ ṇ os tathā ca mañ jarī hareḥ
