[42] tā ū cuḥ —kim ataḥ ś eṣ am anveṣ ā maḥ?
They said “What more do we need to look for? ”
[43] tad etad uktvā ntar-vā riṇ a eva prasā rita-karā ḥ kiñ cid abhyā nañ cuḥ | kṛ ṣ ṇ as tu sā ṅ guli-vyaṅ gam uvā ca—aye ś ata-patra-patra-netrā ḥ ! savidhe’trā gamyatā m |
Saying this they stretched out their hands and advanced slightly. Kṛ ṣ ṇ a then said while pointing his finger: “Oh! Lotus eyed girls! Come here, close to me. ”
[44] tā ū cuḥ —tavaitad ehī haṁ karma katham iva?
They said “Why are you telling us to come here?
[45] kṛ ṣ ṇ a uvā ca—mama dṛ ṣ ṭ ir visṛ ṣ ṭ iś ca viś iṣ ṭ atā m ā pnoti' iti |
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a said “My glance has become extraordinary. ”
[46] tā ū cuḥ —tarhi kim arhitaṁ bhavet?
They said “What does that mean? ”
[47] kṛ ṣ ṇ a uvā ca—grahaṇ ā tivṛ ttir vastra-parivṛ ttiś ca na syā t |
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a said “You cannot change clothing during an eclipse. ”
[48] tā ś ca parasparam ū cuḥ —aho mugdhā ḥ! vañ cayitum eveyaṁ prapañ canā |
They said to each other “O fools! He is speaking in order to cheat us. ”
[49] kṛ ṣ ṇ as tu tā ḥ sandarś ya jihvā ṁ sandaś ya babhā ṣ e—satyam evedaṁ bravī mi, nā satyam |
Biting his tongue, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a then spoke while showing the cloth. “I speak the truth. It is not a lie. ”
[50] tā ḥ punaḥ pratyū ham ū hamā nā vyatyū cuḥ —aho, mū ḍ ha-buddhayaḥ ! suvyaktā ntar-nigū ḍ ha-hā saḥ parī hā sa evā yam asya |
Suspecting some obstacle the girls spoke amongst themselves: “Oh! Fools! This is one of his jokes. He is laughing heartily within himself. ”
[51] kṛ ṣ ṇ as tu gū ḍ ham api smitam agū ḍ ha | samū ḍ ha-priya-vadyatayā py avā dī t—hanta, nahi nahi, yasmā d vrata-kṛ ś atayā bhṛ ś a-dayā -viṣ ayā eva yū yam, na tu dū yamā natā m arhatha |
Hiding his smile he spoke sweet words/ “This is not a joke. You have become thin because of your vows to Kā tyā yanī. You are so pitiful. You should not suffer. ”
[52] tā ū cuḥ —
spṛ hayā luś cā nya-vastraṁ gṛ hayā luś ca yaḥ sa tu |
ś ī taluṣ u dayā luś ced ā ś caryā tiś ayā lutā ||22|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]
They said “Someone who takes others’ clothing because of lust and then acts compassionate to them when they are cold shows himself to be most absurd. ”
[53] bhavatu | visrabdhaṁ vadata, kadā satyaṁ vaktum ā rabdhaṁ tatra-bhavadbhiḥ?
“Let that be. Speak truthfully. When did you begin speaking the truth? ”
[54] kṛ ṣ ṇ a uvā ca—kadā pi nā nṛ taṁ vacasi kṛ tavā n asmi |
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a said “I never speak lies. ”
[55] tā ū cuḥ —kaḥ kathayati?
They said “Who said that? ”
[56] kṛ ṣ ṇ a sa-hā sam uvā ca—aho, kū ṭ akū ṭ aṁ ghaṭ ayamā nā ḥ! yady anyathā manyadhve, parama-dharma-parā n etā n eva sametā n pṛ cchata?
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a spoke with a smile. “Ah! Proud girls! If you make incorrect conclusions about me, then please ask these most righteous people gathered here. ”
[57] tā sahā sam ū cuḥ —satyam ete bhavataḥ prā pta-marmā ṇ aḥ sa-dharmā ṇ aś ca dṛ ś yante |
They said while smiling “True, they seem to know your intentions and are righteous. ”
[58] kṛ ṣ ṇ a uvā ca—hanta, muṣ ṭ i-sambadhya-madhyamā ḥ, pratī tim atī tha cet pratyakṣ ata eva lakṣ yatā m | sarvā bhir evā gamya na vā sarvā n atirekayā kayā cid ekayā pi |
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a said “Ah! Girls with thin waists! If you think my words are not true then see with your eyes. You can all come or one among you can come forward. ”
tataś ca—
tasya tat kṣ velitaṁ ś rutvā
bā lā ḥ prema-pariplutā ḥ |
vrī ḍ itā ḥ prekṣ ya cā nyo’nyaṁ
jā ta-hā sā na niryayuḥ ||23|| [BhP 10. 22. 12] iti |
Then, seeing how Kṛ ṣ ṇ a was joking with them, the gopī s became fully immersed in love for him, and as they glanced at each other they began to laugh and joke among themselves, even in their embarrassment. But still they did not come out of the water.
tī re gantuṁ lajjā sthā tuṁ
nī re ca ś ī tam ity ubhayam |
samajani jā ḍ yaṁ yugapat tad
imā s tatraiva kiñ cid abruvata ||24|| [anu]
They were embarrassed to go to the shore and were freezing cold in the water. Thus they all remained there stunned. They spoke a little.
vraja-nṛ pa-kula-ratna tvaṁ vraja-prī ti-ś ā lī
vraja-jana-mahanī yaś cā si yā cā mahe tat |
vayam atitara-ś ī ta-vyagratā -grasta-cittā
vitara vitara vā saś cā nayaṁ mā ca kā rṣ ī ḥ ||25|| [mā linī ]
“You are the jewel of Nanda, the object of affection for the people and are respected by them. We are becoming disturbed in heart because of the extreme cold. Please give us our clothing. Give us our clothing. Do not act improperly. ”
[59] kṛ ṣ ṇ a uvā ca—mamā nayaḥ ko vā nayana-viṣ ayaḥ kṛ taḥ pratyuta sat-kula-prabhavatī nā ṁ bhavatī nā ṁ vana-devatā hṛ ta-vastrā ṇ ā ṁ sā hā yyam eva kā ryam iti tathā mayā rabdham asti | na tu bhavatī nā ṁ cela-cela-pracaye mā dṛ ś ā m abhilā ṣ a-melaḥ sambhavati | tasmā d asmat-paritoṣ a-poṣ aṇ ā ya yadi kiñ cid api dattha, tadā tan-madā d eva devatā -virodham apy anurodha-viṣ ayī -kurmaḥ |
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a said “I have seen some crafty person here. Since you are from good families I must help you who are defenseless since the forest spirit has stolen your clothing. Therefore I am acting like this. We do not have any interest in your lowly clothing. If you give something to satisfy us, with joy we will remove the obstacle caused by the forest spirit. ”
[60] atha tad etad evam avadhā ritavatyaḥ kā tyā yanī -vratavatyas tad etan manasi vicā ritavyaḥ —hanta, yad asmā bhir manasi rañ jitaṁ, tad evā yaṁ vyañ jitaṁ kartuṁ prayatate | tasmā d asmā kam ayam eva samayaḥ | kintu kim api lakṣ yam evā tra lakṣ yam, tad api svata eva labdham yat pṛ thu-ś ī ta-bhī tatā dikam atra prakaṭ am eva ghaṭ ate |
Hearing this, the girls who were engaged in worshipping Kā tyā yanī began to reflect. “Ah! He is trying to make us reveal the exact intentions in our minds. This is the right time to reveal the attraction in our minds. But we should be careful of deceit. That seems natural since we are now freezing and frightened. ”
[61] atha taṁ prā huḥ —hā, hā, drutam anena haimanena pavanena ś ī ta-parī tatayā jī vana-viparī tatā ṁ vayam ā yā tā ḥ, tasmā n marma-bhedakaṁ narma vṛ thā mā kṛ thā ḥ, kintu vastram eva sevaya | yad vā vā ñ chasi, tat tu lā ñ chanam aṅ gī kṛ tyā pi kariṣ yā maḥ |
They said to him “Ah! We are freezing from the icy wind and are about to die. You should not joke with us using tortuous words. Give us our clothes. We will accept the bad name what you wish to give us. ”
[62] kṛ ṣ ṇ aḥ sa-smitam uvā ca—hanta, yadi madiṣ ṭ aṁ dā syatha, tarhi dā syam eva svī kuruta |
Smiling he said “Oh! If you give what I want I will accept obedience to you. ”
[63] atha tā ś cintayā mā suḥ —hanta, sahasā marma-sparś e karmaṭ hatā m eva labdhavā n asau | bhavatu, vayam api narmā ś ritya tad eva ś armā ṅ gī -kurmaḥ |
They began to think. “Oh! He has become expert at affecting our hearts. Anyway, we must go along with his joke and serve him. ”
[64] spaṣ ṭ aṁ ca procuḥ —ś yā msundara te dā syaḥ [BhP 10. 22. 15]
They then spoke clearly. “O Ś yā masundara! We are your servants. ”
[65] kṛ ṣ ṇ aś ca sa-smitam ā ha sma—tatra ca yan mamoditam, tad anumoditaṁ purataḥ kuruta |
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a spoke with a smile. “Please do as I previously stated. ”
[66] atha tā ḥ parasparam ā locana-pū rvaṁ nikocita-locanam ū cuḥ —bhavatu, karavā ma tavoditam iti |
Looking at each other with darting eyes they spoke: “Alright! We will do as you have said. ”
[67] tad evam api kṛ ṣ ṇ e sa-tṛ ṣ ṇ e’pi tuṣ ṇ ī m eva sthite punar ū cuḥ —dehi vā sā ṁ si dharmajñ a iti |
[68] atra cā nyathā nijā ṅ gī kā ra-sabhaṅ gī -bhā vā d dharma eva marma-bā dhā yā ṁ nā tmā naṁ saṁ varmayed iti bhā vaḥ |
Though filled with eagerness, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a remained silent. Then they spoke again. “O knower of dharma! Give us our clothing! Since you break your promises elsewhere, you should not pronounce dharma while causing mortal wounds. ”
[69] tathā pi tathā sthite tasmin kautuka-nigū ḍ ha-smite punar ū cuḥ —no ced rā jñ e bruvā mahe' iti |
When Kṛ ṣ ṇ a remained silent, hiding an amused smile, they again spoke. “If you do not do this, we will tell the king. ”
[70] atra ca bhaya-nirmuktam imaṁ tad-yukta-mā tram ā caritum uktam idaṁ na tu vastutaḥ |
They spoke in this way to cause fear in him, though he was without fear. They did not mean it.
[71] tad eṣ a vyā ja-padena rā ja-padena yaṁ viś eṣ am abudhyate, tam eva budhyatā ṁ nā ma nikā mam ity abhiprā yaḥ |
The intention of their statement was to make him understand the word “king. ”
[72] kṛ ṣ ṇ aś ca tad-upayuktam uktavā n—aho, kadā dā syo bhaviṣ yatha? kadā vā mayoditaṁ kariṣ yatha? tat tu nopalabhā mahe | yadi vettham satyam eva, tadā gaty-antaram antarā, jalā d utthā ya sarva-sampad utthā ya smitena sametam eva sameta, na tu sū kṣ mayā pi rukṣ atayā | na cen, mithyā -saṅ kalpa-jalpā nā ṁ tata evā dharma-marma-kalpā nā ṁ sā hā yyam asmā bhiḥ kathaṁ vā prathanī yam?
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a replied suitably. “Ah! When will you be my servants? When will you follow my words? I have not realized that yet. If this topic is true, without alternatives, rise from the water, bringing with you all treasures, and come here as a group with smiles-- not with even a little rudeness. If you do not do this, why should we help young girls who have made false vows and have introduced adharma? ”
[73] tathā pi tā sā m anutthā nam uṭ ṭ aṅ kya kaṭ hinatā -ghaṭ itam ā caṣ ṭ e—na vayaṁ vṛ thā kṛ tā ś ā nā ṁ kanyā -pā ś ā nā ṁ vaḥ sambandham anurundhmahe |
kintu—
idaṁ ca me dayā lutvam eva budhyadhvam añ jasā |
no cen nā haṁ pradā sye kiṁ kruddho rā jā kariṣ yati? ||26|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]
Seeing that they did not come out of the water he then spoke using harsh words: “I do not seek a relationship with you girls who are useless, hopeless and vulgar. But you should understand that I am quite merciful to you. Otherwise, I would not give you the cloth. What can an angry king do? ”
[74] atra ca rā ja-padaṁ vyā jā ya vyā jahā ra | tataś ca maunaṁ pratilabhya tā sā ṁ bhayam upalabhya, tena karuṇ a-sabhya-ś iromaṇ inā pratyayam ā carya, kathañ cit pratyaye cā carite ś ī tā rtatā -nirvarti-vā rtatā m ā hartuṁ vrī ḍ ā -niviḍ a-jaḍ a-vapuṣ o’pi jaḍ ā d utterur iti vā rtayanti | tad yadi tathā syā t tadā vastutas tu tat-kā raṇ am idam astu—
He had mentioned the word “king” deceitfully. Then in silence and in fear they began to trust the words of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, the crest jewel of civility and compassion. Still, they did not completely trust him. However, though their bodies could not move because of shame, they rose from the water in order to get relief from the pain of the cold, because their limbs were becoming numb. This is how the wise describe their situation. Though they acted this way because of the cold, there is also another reason.
prā rthyaṁ cet phalati tadā bhajema
dehaṁ no cen no’ti samayasya yaiva sī mā |
tā sā ṁ sā yadi viphalā kva tarhi lajjā
nirvastrā gati-vidhaye himaṁ tu lakṣ yam ||28|| [praharṣ iṇ ī ]
“If our desires are fulfilled we will maintain our bodies. Otherwise we will give up our bodies. This much we agree on. If the agreement is not met, even then what is the use of our shame (since we will die)? Going to him without clothing, we can use the pretext of the cold. ”
[75] tad evaṁ kathañ cid udakā d uktā ś ca tā na vyaktā vayavā jā tā ḥ | kintu—
hasta-pallava-kṛ tā gra-vastrikā ḥ
keś a-vistṛ ti-dhṛ tā parā mbarā ḥ |
ā di-niṣ ṭ hita-kaniṣ ṭ ha-dā rikā ḥ
kubjikā vad amilan kumā rikā ḥ ||29|| [rathoddhatā ]
Somehow they came out of the water but they did not reveal themselves completely.
They placed their delicate hands in front of them, acting as their lower clothing and by spreading their hair they obtained an upper covering. Placing infant girls in front of them, they approached Kṛ ṣ ṇ a with their bodies contracted like hunchbacks.
[76] tataś ca—paś ya kṛ ṣ ṇ a, paś ya sarvatas trastā etā loptrā ṇ i vastrā ṇ i pā thasy eva srastā ni vidhā yā gatā iti saṁ lapya prabala-hā saṁ valgati bā la-varge, haris tv idaṁ bhā vitavā n atī va dayā m ayā mā sa |
The young boys then laughed loudly amongst themselves, saying “Look Kṛ ṣ ṇ a! These young girls, completely frightened, are coming here after throwing their clothing in the water. ” Kṛ ṣ ṇ a however, being contemplative, showed great mercy.
yathā —
ś aś adhara-tanvā tulanā m ā hata-lakṣ aṇ atayā yayur yad api |
tad api ca tā ṁ sahasā mū r ā hata-lakṣ aṇ atayā jigyuḥ ||29|| [ā ryā ]
Though women endowed with all good qualities are compared to the moon, these young girls surpassed that comparison since they were without blemish.
etā ḥ sat-kula-sambhavā varam aho vā ñ chanti dehavyayam
na vrī ḍ ā kṣ ayam evam apy atha daś ā m etā ṁ gatā mat-puraḥ |
bī jaṁ cā tra parantu mad-vimukhatā ś aṅ kā tataḥ kuṇ ṭ hatā m
utkaṇ ṭ hā kiratī viloṭ hayati mā m ā sā ṁ nijā ś armaṇ i ||30|| [ś ā rdū la]
How astonishing! These girls from good families desire to give up their bodies. They cannot give up their shame. They have approached me in this condition. It is good that they worry about displeasing me. Their eagerness has made them give up reservations and they look to me in their condition of suffering.
[77] tathā py ā sā ṁ suṣ ṭ hu tan-niṣ ṭ hā ṁ niṣ ṭ aṅ kayituṁ paṅ ka-darś inaṁ mano-ratha-sparś inaṁ parihā sam apy atī va spaṣ ṭ ayituṁ cittam idam utkaṇ ṭ hate | yadā gatā api saṅ kocā vagā hataḥ parasparam ā hata-prakā ś ā vayavā eva tiṣ ṭ hanti iti |
My heart desires to make clear jokes which fulfill my desires and point out their faults, in order to remove their shyness. Though they have come, they are fully inhibited and remain there covering their limbs.
[78] prakā ś ayann uvā ca—are re, capalā ḥ, kathaṁ bhavanto hasanti? etā ḥ khalu nagnikā eva kathaṁ nagnikā -bhā ve doṣ am arhanti? iti |
He then spoke out loud. “Ah! You are fickle boys! Why are you laughing? These girls are without clothes. Can they be criticized in a naked state? ”
[79] atha punar vastra-kadambaṁ kadamba-skandha-sandhi-viś eṣ e sa-pratyā hā raṁ tat-pratyakṣ a-saṁ valitatayā sandhā ya prema-bandhā ya sa-smitaṁ tā ḥ praty evam ā ha sma—
Taking the cloth from a branch of the kadamba tree and showing it to them, he spoke with a smile in order to express his love.
[80] dā syā ṅ gī kā ra-kā raṇ ā t pradā syā my eva tā ny etā ni vastrā ṇ i | kintu pū rvam aś akya-nirṇ ayaḥ, samprati tu nirvarṇ ya nirṇ ī taḥ, so’yaṁ sad-guruto yajata-namatā ṁ prā ptavatī nā ṁ bhavatī nā ṁ durnayaḥ sapadi mā ṁ vivarṇ ayan vartate | tad etad avadhā ryatā ṁ bhavatī bhiḥ —
ś ambaraṁ praviviś e bimbā dharaṁ
yat tad eva jaladevahelanam |
chidram ā varitum atra tadvrate
ś ī rṣ abhā kkarayugaṁ sa namyatā m ||31|| [rathoddhatā ]
“I will give you the cloth when you decide to become my servants. Previously it was difficult to decide, but seeing the situation now, it is clear. You have learned about conducting worship from a genuine guru but I have become pale on seeing your bad conduct. You should understand that by entering the river naked you have offended the deity of the water. In order to nullify this fault you must place your hands on your heads and offer respects to the deity. ”
[81] tā s tu tatra sā patrapa-cittā ś ca parama-bhī ti-bhittā s tathā kā ryatayā vadhā rya paś yata ke’pi ś abdā yante iti bā lā nā ṁ dṛ ṣ ṭ ī ḥ pratā rya patir eva devatā iti vicā rya sa-parihā sa-vilā sa-vyā jatas tam eva namaś cakruḥ —svā min, namas tubhyam iti |
The girls felt shame in their hearts. They were overcome with intense fear. They understood that they must obey his order. “It is improper that these boys see our private parts but there is no harm in showing them to a husband who is like a devatā. ” They thus diverted the boys by saying “Look! Someone is making sound over there. ” In a joking manner they offered respects to Kṛ ṣ ṇ a. “O master, we offer respects to you. ”
[82] tataś ca kṛ ṣ ṇ aḥ sa-kautuka-tṛ ṣ ṇ ayā tā sā ṁ prati pratī kaṁ sandṛ ś ya, snigdhatā ṁ vidagdhatā m api parā mṛ ś ya, labdha-prasā da-melaḥ khelā -valitaṁ celā ni yathā svam arpayā mā sa | yatra ca—dṛ ṣ ṭ i-patha-sevanā d eva bhavatī nā ṁ puṣ ṭ i-dī rghatā dikaṁ mama muṣ ṭ i-gataṁ jā taṁ, katham anyathā samarpaṇ aṁ kuryā m? ity evaṁ tuṣ ṭ iṁ dadā naḥ sva-vicakṣ aṇ atā ṁ lakṣ ayā mā sa |
Seeing their limbs with interest and eagerness, considering their tenderness and beauty, he became satisfied. He gave them their clothing with a laugh. “Because of seeing you, I have easily attained you as my wives. How else can I offer myself to you? ” Having satisfied them he showed his own cleverness.
kintu—
prā tikū lya-vacanaṁ ca sauhṛ dā d
ā nukū lyam abhigamya ś armadam |
paś ya vastra-haraṇ ā dinā hariḥ
pratyuta pramadayā m babhū va tā ḥ ||32|| [rathoddhatā ]
Unfavorable speech produced out of friendship produces compliance and joy. See! By stealing their clothes he gave them great bliss.
[83] tataś ca vṛ kṣ ā d avatī rṇ avati tasmin,
lajjā -saṁ varaṇ ā rtham aṁ baram adhur bā lā bhṛ ś aṁ lajjitā s
tarhi svā ṅ ga-vṛ tiṁ dadhur muhur aho vyaktā ntaraṅ gā rati |
kṛ ṣ ṇ ā d alpa-vivṛ tta-vaktra-kamalā s tasthur dṛ gantaḥ punas
tatrā gā d vraja-subhruvā m ahaha bhoḥ kā masya vā mā gatiḥ ||33|| [ś ā rdū la]
When Kṛ ṣ ṇ a came down from the tree to hide their shame, the girls put on their clothing with even greater embarrassment. Clear rati manifested in them and spread throughout their limbs. Their lotus faces began to blossom slightly on attaining Kṛ ṣ ṇ a. Their glances fell upon him. Ah! The movement of love is crooked!
yad artham atrā gatavā n ayaṁ harir varā rpaṇ aṁ vismṛ tavā mṣ tad eva tu
tā sā ṁ mukā mbhoja-tater madhū likā -saurabhya-mā traṁ paribhya nā sayā ||34|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a came to give them a gift, but he forgot everything on smelling the fragrance from their lotus faces with his nose.
tataś ca—
bhṛ ṅ ga-ś reṇ ya ivā mbhojaṁ rasa-pū rṇ aṁ kumā rikā ḥ |
bhartṛ -kā mā s tadā kṛ ṣ ṇ aṁ varī tuṁ paritaḥ sthitā ḥ ||35|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]
As bees surround lotuses filled with honey, the young girls remained around him, accepting him as their husband.
[84] atha teṣ u cā karā leṣ u bā leṣ u—cala cala kiṁ vā karaṇ ī yam atra? iti kara-dvayaṁ vasanā di-parikara-cayaṁ cā kṛ ṣ ya hṛ ṣ yatsu vitaraṇ ī yaṁ varam ambara-hā ritā hā rī hariḥ svam anusaṁ hitavā n |
The girls then said “Let us go. What else should we do here? ” Taking the clothing and ornaments in their hands, they felt bliss. Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, attractive because of stealing the clothing, looked for the gift he was to give.
tataś ca—
tā sā ṁ vijñ ā ya gopā laḥ sva-kara-sparś a-kā myayā |
dhṛ ta-vratā nā ṁ saṅ kalpaṁ kalpayā mā sa siddhidam ||36|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]
Thereafter, understanding that the girls undergoing penance desired to touch his hand, he decided to fulfill that desire.
yathā —
svasyā rthaḥ sa tu yad vibhā ti parataḥ svī yaṁ samā rā dhanaṁ
mayy ā viṣ ṭ a-manā s tv anā daram athā caryā tra mā bā dhayati |
tatrā dye svayam asmi ś aś vad upamā yū yaṁ dvitī ye tataḥ
saṁ kalpo nirupadhir eṣ a bhavatī ṣ v evā tisatyo mataḥ ||37|| [ś ā rdū la]
I f one worships someone else for one’s own benefit, it is worship for the self. One who is absorbed in me but shows disrespect externally gives me pain. I am the first type of person. You are the second type. I consider your unconditional vow to be the highest truth.
sarpir-bhṛ ṣ ṭ am ā guḍ a-kvathitatā m ā ptā ś ca dhā nā yathā
vasyante svayam eva bī javad amū s tanvanti nā nya-spṛ hā m |
man-mā tra-spṛ hiṇ ā ṁ madī ya-bhajanaṁ no tadvad anya-spṛ haṁ
kintu syā d rasanī ya-rū pam iti ced yuṣ mā kam ā stā ṁ kathā ||38|| [ś ā rdū la]
In desiring me, you have no other desire, just as grains fried in ghee and then fermented in sugar dissolve. Worshipping only me, you worship no other object. There is only taste for me. Thus, what more can I say about you?
[85] tad evam ā karṇ inī r vara-varṇ inī sadya eva gā ndharva-parva sampadyatā m ity abhiprā yatayā sā patrapa-nayanā ḥ svī kṛ ta-maya-samayam apekṣ amā ṇ ā ḥ prati samardhakatayā samardhakatā ṁ gacchan punar accham uvā ca,
When the best of women heard this, when he hinted that they should marry according to Gandharva rites, their eyes showed embarrassment, and they waited for the time of acceptance. Increasing his powers for accepting them in marriage, he again spoke pure words to them.
yathā —
mithaḥ svī kā raḥ syā t pariṇ aya-vidhis tat-parikaraḥ
pare te te dharmā ḥ sa punar udabodhi svayam iha |
ato yū yaṁ siddhā vraja-gamanam evā dya kuruta
kṣ apā yā ṁ kasyā ñ cit kila milanam apy ā ś u bhavitā ||39|| [ś ikhariṇ ī ]
Mutual acceptance of the bride and groom is the method of Gandharva marriage. Mutual acceptance is the highest dharma and manifests naturally between a couple.

[86] tad evaṁ tā bhyaḥ pratiś rutavati tasminn adhikam eva tā sā m ā veś o jā taḥ | yathā ha ś rī -ś ukaḥ —
ity ā diṣ ṭ ā bhagavatā labdha-kā mā ḥ kumā rikā ḥ |
dhyā yatyas tat-padā mbhojaṁ kṛ cchrā n nirviviś ur vrajam || [BhP 10. 22. 28] iti |
When he promised them this, their devotion increased further. Ś ukadeva has said:
Thus instructed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the young girls, their desire now fulfilled, could bring themselves only with great difficulty to return to the village of Vraja, meditating all the while upon his lotus feet.
tathā hi—
akṣ ibhyā ṁ vaktra-bimbā d bhuja-yuga-rucibhā ṅ madhya-bhā gā n nitambā d
ū rubhyā ṁ jā nu-yugmā t pada-sarasi-ruha-dvandvam ā pur murā reḥ |
vrī ḍ ā -namrā ḥ sva-dṛ gbhyā m ahaha mṛ ga-dṛ ś as tad-viyuktau tu tat tat paś cā d
dṛ ṣ ṭ aṁ padaṁ tu pratipadam udabhū d antare lagnam ā sā m ||40|| [sragdharā ]
When the girls bowed to him in shyness, their eyes experienced first his eyes, then his red lips, then his arms, then his waist, hips, thighs, knees and lotus feet. When they separated from him and returned to Vraja, they saw those limbs within their hearts continually.
dve cittavā sasī nī tvā kumā rī ṇ ā ṁ paraṁ dade |
na pū rvaṁ tu nirā kā raṁ gopanī yam atī va saḥ ||41|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]
Kṛ ṣ ṇ a stole their cloth and their hearts and only returned their cloth. He did not return their hearts but hid them.
yat tarhy antima-ghasra-pū ryam api tā devy-arcanaṁ san-madā d
vismṛ tya vrajam eva jagmur abhavaṁ s tenaiva pū rṇ a-kriyā ḥ |
