Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who killed Pū tanā. Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who crushed the body of Tṛ nā varta. Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who uprooted the Arjuna trees. Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who destroyed Vatsā sura and Bakā sura. Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who killed Vyomā sura and Aghā sura. Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who subdued Kā liya. Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who killed harsh Pralambā sura. Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who swallowed two forest fires. Who has performed the worship of Govardhana? He who gives fear to Kaṁ sa.   kintu—        tadaiva guṇ inā ṁ guṇ ā vividha-kautukā ny apy aho,                    mano-haraṇ am ā vahan vraja-nivā sinā ṁ sarvataḥ |        yadā gharipu-vaṁ ś ikā kala-tuṣ ā ra-kā nti-tviṣ ā                    jaḍ ī kṛ ta-ś arī ratā bhavati taṁ tu kā laṁ vinā ||[66]|| [ś ikhariṇ ī ]   But when the inhabitants of Vraja became stunned by the sweet sound of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s flute, cool like snow without winter, all the good qualities and various interests of the inhabitants became attractive.          agre kā ñ cana-ratna-ś ṛ ṅ ga-valitā dhenv-ā dikā ḥ sarvatas        tā sā ṁ gopa-tatī r vidhā ya sakhibhiḥ sā rdhaṁ hariḥ sā grajaḥ |        dī vyad-divya-suvarṇ a-varṇ a-vasanā d udgacchad-aṅ ga-prabhaḥ        kalyā -kuṅ kuma-yuk-karā kṣ a-vilasat-pṛ ṣ ṭ haḥ sphurad-veṣ avā n ||67|| [ś ā rdū la]   Putting the cows with gold, gem-studded horns in front and arranging all the cowherds, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a began circumambulating the mountain with Balarā ma and his friends. His effulgence reflected from his cloth shining like gold. His body shone with kuṁ kuma and a rope hung over his back. His clothes also shone.          sad-gandhā ruṇ a-cū rṇ a-rocana-tanur yaṣ ṭ iṁ nabhasy utkṣ ipan        gṛ hṇ aṁ ś ca pratikū la-gā mi-dhavalā vidrutya saṅ kocayan |        hā saṁ krī ḍ anakaṁ mithaḥ karayutiṁ saṁ vā ditā ṁ vā ditā ṁ        kurvan vā dita-valgu-veṇ u-paritaś cakrā ma govardhanam ||68|| [ś ā rdū la] [yugmakam]   His body was attractive with fine scents and red powder. He threw his stick in the air and caught it. Running after the straying cows, he brought them back to the path. Laughing and playing, he kept beat with his hand, sometimes in agreement and sometimes in syncopation. Playing on his flute, he walked around Govardhana.          yadā harir yatra gatiṁ vilā sataś                    cakā ra mandaṁ laghu vā yadṛ cchayā |        tadā dṛ ś aḥ sarva-janasya tā ṁ daś ā ṁ                    tatrā yayuḥ sū tra-niyantritā iva ||69|| [upajā ti 12]   Wherever Kṛ ṣ ṇ a went a by his will either quickly or slowly, all peoples’ eyes went there and attained the same state, as if they were puppets on strings.   [46] tad evaṁ bahula-kutū halataś cā laṁ cā lam amī gopa-grā maṇ yas tad eva ramyaṁ yajñ a-dhā ma samā gamya paramā nandā d vā ṇ inī -prabhṛ ti-kṛ ta-nṛ tya-vā dya-gī ta-grā miṇ ī ṁ yā minī ṁ viś rā myanti sma | prā taś ca dvitī yā yā m ahimakara-kanyā yā mahima-ś ravaṇ ataḥ praṇ atatayā tasyā ṁ snā nam ā carya nikā yyam evā gacchanti sma |   With great joy they continued the journey, and returned to the attractive place of sacrifice. In great bliss, they spent the night there, with the women and others dancing, singing and playing instruments. The next morning, after hearing the glories of Yamunā and offering her respects, they took bath in the river and returned to their houses.   [47] tasyā ṁ ca bhrā tṛ -dvitī yā yā ṁ bhrā tṛ bhiḥ praś astena bhaginī -hastena bhoktavyam iti parama-dhanyā bhir upanandā di-kanyā bhir mitho milantī bhir nimantritau praṇ aya-yantritau tatra sa-tṛ ṣ ṇ au ca rā ma-kṛ ṣ ṇ au sahacara-nikareṇ a saha bhojana-kareṇ a saha maham arocayatā m |   On this day called Bhrā tṛ -dvitī ya, the brother should be fed by the hand of the sister. Thus, Balarā ma and Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, full of longing and controlled by their affection, along with their friends, were invited by a gathering of most fortunate young daughters of Upananda and others, were served food and achieved great happiness.   [48] tad evaṁ vṛ tte vṛ tte, kṛ ṣ ṇ asya samunnaddhatā -bandhayā kuhanayā mad-yajñ a-pratyū hanam idam ity ū hamā naḥ ś akras tu vakra-bhā va-cakratayā cukrodha |   After this, Indra, with crooked mentality, became angry, thinking “Kṛ ṣ ṇ a has prevented my sacrifice because of his inflated pride. ”   [49] kṛ ṣ ṇ ena tasya yā gū ḍ hā pi khaṭ vā rū ḍ hatā tarkitā, sā katham anyathā samparkitayā varteteti vyaktī kartum iva matsaratas tat-sahita-viś va-mahita-ś rī man-nandā di-nindā -pū rvakaṁ saṁ vartaka-meghā n vraja-vighā tā ya pravartayā mā sa |   Out of envy, to show that Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s aggressive inferences about Indra, though not made directly to him, should not be accepted, Indra sent the Saṁ vartaka clouds to destroy Vraja and to chastise Nanda and others who were worshipped by the universe.     tataś ca—          kauveryā ṁ pū rvam ā sī t kim api hima-marut kā limā meghaleś aḥ        ś ampā -nirghoṣ a-vī psā -spṛ g iti paś u-kule goṣ ṭ ham evā ś u nī te |        gopā dyā durnimitta-prakara-kalanayā kṛ ṣ ṇ am ā vṛ tya vṛ ttā s        tan-nirdeś ā t tam ā driṁ sapadi parigatā s tasthur ū rdhvaṁ nirī kṣ ya ||70|| [sragdharā ]   First, from the north, an icy wind began blowing and black clouds appeared, while thunder rolled. The cowherds brought the cows to the sheds and, seeing the bad omens, surrounded Kṛ ṣ ṇ a and remained in that position. On Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s order they went to Govardhana and looking up, remained there.   [50] nirdeś ā, yathā --        indro yadi mahā -vṛ ṣ ṭ iṁ naṣ ṭ a-sṛ ṣ ṭ iṁ taniṣ yati |        tad-aṅ gī kā ri-girirā ṭ kṛ pā ṁ sā ṅ gī kariṣ yati ||71|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]   Kṛ ṣ ṇ a stated “If Indra is producing this rain to destroy the universe, Govardhana, giver of mercy, will be merciful. ”   [51] upatyakā m upetya, taṁ vighnaṁ nighnaṁ kartum ā drim upaghnaṁ kṛ tvā kṛ tā dhiṣ ṭ hā ne tu goṣ ṭ he goṣ ṭ hendra-tanaye ca samayaṁ pratipā layati—   When they came near the mountain in order to clear all obstacles, the cowherds and Kṛ ṣ ṇ a remained there. Govardhana began to keep his promise.          ghaḍ ad-ghaḍ ad iti dhvana-daghana-ghaṭ ā bhisaṅ ghaṭ ṭ anaiḥ        kaṭ hora-kuṭ ha-kuṭ ṭ akaiḥ kuṭ ila-vā yubhiḥ kuṇ ṭ hite |        prakoṣ ṭ ha-kuṭ a-kuṭ ṭ imā -vaṭ a-taṭ ā di-maty ujjhite        jane prakaṭ am ā ṭ a sā prathita-dhṛ ṣ ṭ i-vṛ ṣ ṭ i-prathā ||72|| [pṛ thvī ]   First the people had taken shelter of courtyards, strongholds, cottages, banyan trees and slopes, but then they were afflicted by crooked blasts of wind which felled huge trees and made terrifying sounds. When the people gave up Vraja, the wind wandered about with ever-increasing boldness.          dhā rā ḥ ś akra-dhanur vimukta-ś aratā ṁ tanvanti varṣ opalā        vajratvaṁ bata vajra-pā ta-nicayā ḥ sū rya-prapā ta-bhramam |        itthaṁ duḥ khitayā hariṁ gatim ite goṣ ṭ he sa govardhanaṁ        haste’dhatta yathā na kena ca tadā ś aktaṁ darā py ū hitum ||73|| [ś ā rdū la]   The streams of rain appeared to be arrows released from Indra’s bow (rainbow). The hail was hard like thunderbolts. Thunderbolts wandered about, making the sun fall from its orbit. In this condition when all the cowherds surrendered to Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a lifted Govardhana in his hand, in such a way that no one at all could speculate how he did it.      [52] tad evaṁ meghaṅ kare purandare niviḍ ī ṣ a-varṣ ā dinā bhayaṅ kare cā rtiṅ kare ca jā te kṣ emaṅ karaḥ sa murā riḥ purā hy evaṁ parā mamarś a—   Seeing that the rains of Indra, maker of clouds, were definitely causing fear and pain, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, who produces auspiciousness, first began to reflect.          indraḥ svairā bhimā nī mayi mad-anugate cā vamā nī tataś ca        svā ntā n me dū ramā nī tad amum anu mayā mā na-bhaṅ ga-prasaktaḥ |        goṣ ṭ haṁ mad-gaty-aś eṣ aṁ mama mad-anugatasyā pi mud-bhṛ d-viś eṣ aṁ        mac-citte sā vaś eṣ aṁ tad idam atha mayā prā ṇ a-sā myena dhā ryam ||74|| iti | [sragdharā ]   “I think that Indra with pride believes that I am far away. Therefore I should crush his pride. I am the only resort for the cowherds. I and my followers attain great bliss in the cow sheds. They are my heart. I treasure them as my very life. ”          samajani halinā na harer giri-dhṛ ti-sambhrama-vaś ena saṁ vā daḥ |        tad api paraspara-hā rdā - jñ ā naṁ tasminn ajī janat tam iva ||75|| [gī ti]   When there was confusion as Kṛ ṣ ṇ a held up the mountain, he began to discuss with Balarā ma. Awareness of their mutual affection produced discussion about holding up the mountain.   [53] taṁ nagam unnayamā naś cā sau romā ñ cataḥ sū ci-nicaya-nicita-sarvā vayavā n iva nicā yann, amū la-bhī ru-mā thurā bhī ra-jā ti-jā tī ya-gambhī ra-madhura-svara-vikasvara-dū ra-bhū -vibhū ti-hū tibhir ū rjita-garjitā di-garvaṁ sarvaṁ kharvaṁ vidhā ya priyaṅ karatayā vyaktam uktavā n—   Lifting that mountain, his hairs stood on end like needles. He reduced the pride of the rumbling thunder by his sweet, deep voice, extending far in the distance to his family of cowherds having baseless fear. With affection he spoke clearly.    [54] yatra khalu muhur api he-ś abdaḥ plutatā pluta evā sī t | tathā hi—amba he, mā vilambasva | tā ta he, atraiva yū yam ā yā ta | ā rya he, sarvā n ā dā yā gaccha iti prabhṛ ti |   When he called, the word “O” extended in length. “O mother! Do not delay. O father! Please come. O elders! Bring everyone. ”   [55] tad evaṁ balarā meṇ a balenā ntikam ā nī teṣ u teṣ u punar ū civā n—            pitar na kuru sambhramaṁ janani nā rtim ā vartaya,                    praś ā mya suhṛ dā ṁ tate mama tu ko’pi nā tra ś ramaḥ |        yato giri-varaḥ svayaṁ karuṇ ayā kare mā make                    samutpatana-lī layā sa varivarti tū la-prabhaḥ ||76|| [pṛ thvī ]     kiṁ ca,        bhū bhṛ d-garte’py atra niś reṇ i-yukte               sthā naṁ paś yann asmi pā tā la-kalpam |        vistī rṇ o’bhū d adrir ity antar-ambhaḥ -                    saṅ gā tī te no nipatyā di cā tra ||77|| [ś ā linī ]   When Balarā ma brought them all close, he again said to them “O father! Do not fear. O mother! Do not be troubled! O friends! Be happy! I am not exerting myself at all, since merciful Govardhana is himself rising up in my hand and is light like a piece of cotton. I see within the mountain a hole, having a ladder, looking like Pā tā la. Since the mountain is broad, there is no water in the central area and it is not slippery. ”    [56] punaś ca teṣ ā ṁ bhā vā ntaraṁ vibhā vya sva-kartṛ ka-dhā raṇ am apy ardham aṅ gī kṛ tya bhaṇ ati sma—   Seeing that they were thinking that he could not hold the mountain and it would fall, he again spoke, accepting to partially hold the mountain.          mā tar mantraṇ ayā mā mā ṁ nivartayata sattamā ḥ |        udasto yena tad-dhastā d dhvastaḥ syā d girirā ṭ katham? ||78|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]     kiṁ ca—        mā vilambadhvam atyarthaṁ yuṣ mad-duḥ khena kampratā m |        mayi gacchaty adripatiḥ patitā viś ata drutam ||79|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]   “O respectable people! Do not forbid me to do this, on the advice of my mother. How can the mountain fall from the hand of someone lifting it? However, do not delay very long. Seeing your suffering I will tremble-- and then the mountain will fall. Quickly come under the mountain. ”          atha paś upa-janas tadī ya-hā rdā d                    drutam aviś an nikhilas tadā dri-garte |        nahi ś araṇ atayā kadā cid enaṁ                    sa bhajati kintu tad-eka-tarṣ i-buddhyā ||80|| [puṣ pitā grā ]   Understanding Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s desire, the cowherd came under the mountain. They did not think of him as their protector, but as their only object of service (to be protected).   tataś ca—        suvinyasta-niḥ ś reṇ i-labdha-praveś aṁ                    maṇ i-ś reṇ i-vidyotamā na-pradeś am |        gṛ hasyeva ratnā ṅ ga-bhitti-prakā raṁ                    tad-ū rdhvaṁ ca tat-tū lya-ś obhā -pracā ram ||81|| [bhujaṅ gaprayā tā ]   There was a hole equipped with a ladder by which one could easily enter into a place lit by jewels. Its walls were studded with gems just like a house and it had a splendid ceiling.            sukha-sparś a-maṇ y-ā cita-kṣ auṇ i-bhā gaṁ                    samastā vakā ś ā rha-sandhā -vibhā gam |        yathā pekṣ a-vibhrā jita-svaccha-nī raṁ                    sukhā kā ri-dharmā ñ ci-nī caiḥ samī ram ||82|| [bhujaṅ gaprayā tā ]   The floors were embedded with touchstones and the place was divided into rooms. Fresh water was available. A gentle wind, pleasant to the touch, was blowing.          kare svasya vā me tu vā me vasantaṁ                    giriṁ lī layā spṛ ś ya santaṁ hasantam |        tadī yā ntar-udyan-mahā -kuṭ ṭ ima-sthaṁ                    hariṁ hā ri-rū pā dibhiḥ prā g-avastham ||83|| [bhujaṅ gaprayā tā ]   He held up the mountain casually in his left hand while smiling. He remained standing in that broad interior with his attractive form.          dadhad-veṇ um ā namra-hasta-pradhā naṁ                    kadā cin mudā sakhyur aṁ se dadhā nam |        dadarś a praharṣ aṁ satarṣ aṁ sabhī tiṁ                    vrajā vā si-loko yayau cā tirī tim ||84|| [bhujaṅ gaprayā tā ]   With his arm on a friends shoulder he held his flute in his bent hand. The inhabitants of Vraja saw him with joy, eagerness and fear. They became stunned.          govardhanā dris tatrā sī d ratna-citraṁ mahā -gṛ ham |        harir yatra harid-ratna-stambhatā rambhi-vibhramaḥ ||85|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]   Govardhana was like a huge house decorated with jewels, in which Kṛ ṣ ṇ a was situated as a sapphire pillar.   api ca—        vilasati maṇ i-daṇ ḍ a-ś rī r mukundasya bā hus                    tad-upari parito’pi cchatra-tulyo girī ndraḥ |        pratidiś am iha muktā -dā mavad vā ri-dhā rā                    vraja-sadana-janā nā ṁ pratyutā bhū d vibhū tiḥ ||86|| [mā linī ]   Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s arm was like a jeweled stick and the mountain was like an umbrella above. The rains falling everywhere were like strings of pearls. The people of Vraja experienced the rain as a splendor.   [57] tataś ca sahasā rohiṇ ī -sahitā vrajeś a-gṛ hiṇ ī taṁ pā rś vayor gṛ hī tavatī | tad idaṁ varṇ ibhir nirvarṇ ya varṇ yate sma, yathā —          mā tṛ bhyā ṁ pā rś va-yugme dhṛ ta-tanur asakṛ n mṛ jyamā nā nanā bjaḥ        pitrā dy-ā tmī ya-vargaiḥ sa-pulakam abhito vī kṣ ito’tarkya-karmā |        so’yaṁ smerā bja-netraṁ kalita-taṭ a-kalā -hastakaḥ savya-hasta-        nyasta-kṣ auṇ ī -bhṛ d uccair jaya-jaya-ninadā nvī ḍ itaḥ krī ḍ atī va ||87|| [sragdharā ]   Then Yaś odā along with Rohiṇ ī held his sides. This is described by poets as follows.   He was held on the sides by the two mothers, who began wiping his lotus face repeatedly. Seeing his amazing actions, Nanda and others stood with hairs standing on end. Then, with smiling lotus eyes, with hands making a dancer’s gestures, holding the mountain on his left hand, he shouted “Victory! Victory! ” while playing.          govardhana-dharasyā gre vilā sā n vyañ jato balaḥ |        kṛ tsnā n utsā hayaty eṣ a nā ṭ ye vā naṭ a-nā yakaḥ ||88|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]   In front of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, Balarā ma, like an actor in a drama, amused all the jovial people.   [58] tad evaṁ sati—        mahā -vṛ ṣ ṭ ir garjaḥ khara-hima-pavanaḥ sphū rjathur dhvā ntam abdas        tathā vajrī ty evaṁ vidha-vividha-gati-kleś a-hetur bahir yaḥ |        tam antar nirvarṣ aṁ madhura-nigaditaṁ cā ru-vā yuḥ pragī taṁ        marī ciś citraś rī r ajitagiribhṛ d ity ā ptaś arma vyakā rī t ||89|| [ś obhā ]   While outside there was great rainstorms, roaring, wind, hard hail, thunder and dark clouds, which caused suffering, inside there was no rain, there were sweet voices, pleasant breezes, attractive songs, rays of light, and Kṛ ṣ ṇ a with remarkable beauty, which produced happiness.          nṛ tya-stotra-pragī tā ny aticaṭ ula-naṭ ā dy-arthinā ṁ dā na-caryā        varyā ṇ ā ṁ svasti-pā ṭ haḥ ś ruti-samaya-vidā ṁ krī ḍ itaṁ bā lakā nā m |        garvā t kharvā khilā nā m iti sakalam abhū d yasya tu prema-jā taṁ        sa ś rī -govardhanā dri-pravara-dhara-karaḥ kaṁ na toṣ aṁ pupoṣ a? ||90|| [sragdharā ] There was singing, eulogies and dancing by skillful performers. The best residents gave charity. Knowers of Vedic customs chanted auspicious prayers. The children played. Everyone’s pride was reduced and their prema for Kṛ ṣ ṇ a increased. What happiness did the lifter of the mountain not give them?          gurau namrā tulye smita-yug anupā lye dhṛ ta-jalā                    kvacil lī lā lolā maghavati tu vakrā bata satī |        dhṛ tā drer dṛ ṣ ṭ is tat tad anu guṇ am arthaṁ vidadhatī                    kriyā m anyā ṁ tasya svam anu punar-uktā m akuruta ||91|| [ś ikhariṇ ī ]   Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s praiseworthy glance was humble to the elders, smiling to his equals, filled with tears to his followers, and sometimes unsteady. But it was crooked towards Indra! Towards each of them he expressed an appropriate meaning. Any other action would have the fault of redundancy.          giridhara-vadanendo raś mi-pī yū ṣ a-dhā rā ṁ                    pibad iha paś u-jā taṁ sapta-rā trin-divā ni |        kṣ udham api sa-tṛ ṣ aṁ tan nā yayau tarhi tasya                    praṇ ayi-jana-gaṇ ā nā ṁ kiṁ bruve na bruve kim? ||92|| [mā linī ]   Drinking the nectar from the rays of his moon-like face, the cows gave up hunger and thirst for seven days and nights, what to speak of the people who had affection for him.            ś rī -mukhena janatā sudhā -rasair                    asya bhū dhara-dharasya pū ryate |        evam apy avayatī tadā prasū s                    tan muhur bahu-rasair apū rayat ||93|| [rathoddhatā ]    The people became filled with the juicy nectar emanating from his face.  Thinking that he was hungry and thirsty, his mother kept filling him with juicy nectar.            saptā har-niś a-nirmitā giribhṛ tā ye ye vilā sā s tadā        tā n kalpair api saptabhiḥ kathayitā ś eṣ o’pi nā ś eṣ ataḥ |        evaṁ ced vacanair amū ṁ s tri-caturaiḥ sac-cā turī -varjitais        tū rṇ aṁ varṇ itavā n kaviḥ svayam asau durbhū ya dodū yate ||94|| [ś ā rdū la]   Ananta with his thousand mouths, describing for seven kalpas, cannot complete the glories of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s pastime of holding the mountain for seven days and nights. If a poet quickly tries to describe this in three or four verses, devoid of ornaments, he will end in despair.   [59] tad evam atra prastā ve labdhā vasthā ne, tatra ś akras tu duṣ ṭ a-kramam anuṣ ṭ hitavā n—   When this situation prevailed, Indra then resorted to evil means.   [60] prathamaṁ tā vat prathamā nena vā tena vā tena te pralayaṁ gatā iti sandihya, tadaiva tad-daivata-ś atam eva tatra prabhū ta-dū tatayā prasthā pitavā n | tat tu tasmā d atisatvaram ā gatvaratayā tad abhī ṣ ṭ aṁ pratyā caṣ ṭ a | tataś ca balā rā tir balā t pravartita-prasā reṇ a jalā sā reṇ a tad-vilā panaṁ pratī tya ca satyatā -pratipattaye jalada-devā n eva tad-vā rtā yā ṁ vartayā mā sa | vartitā ś ca te tad-vī kṣ itena pathā pratyā gatya yathā -pū rvaṁ tat pratyā ś ā -padaṁ pratyā khyā ya sthitavantaḥ | tataś ca paramam apū rvaṁ matvā, manasy atī va dhū rvaṇ aṁ gatvā, ghanā ghana-bṛ ṁ haṇ aḥ sa ghanā ghanaḥ sva-vā hanaṁ ghanā ghanaṁ krodhā d aṅ kuś ena maṅ kṣ u jaghā na | hatvā ca kiñ cid agrato gatvā satvaram airā vatī ya-vahnim ahni cā pahnuta-netra-vī ryaṁ vikī rya dū tyā ya tad-devatā m avatā rayā mā sa | sā ca tato nivṛ tya pravṛ tty-antaraṁ nivedayā mā sa—deva, paramā ś carya-caryeyam avadhā ryatā m, yat khalu sa eva bali-bhojana-valita-balaḥ sann acalaḥ samyag utpatann ivā valokyate |   First he doubted that Vraja had been destroyed by the increased winds. He sent off hundreds of wind devatā s to carry out his work. Quickly they came back, reporting that nothing had happened. Thinking that the strong rains must have destroyed everything, he sent the cloud devatā s. They returned and answered that nothing had happened. Thinking this very strange, he became depressed. He began beating his carrier cloud in anger with his goad. Suddenly the lightning deity appeared in the sky in front of him, throwing fire with his eyes to destroy all strength. That devatā s returned with the same report. “Please understand a remarkable event has occurred. I have seen that mountain which expanded to eat all the offerings now floating in the air. ”    [61] indra uvā ca—dṛ ś yatā ṁ kī dṛ ś am anantaram antaraṁ jā tam? labdha-ś okaś ca vraja-lokaḥ kutra vā sa-putraḥ prayā taḥ?   Indra said “See how the opposite has happened. Where have the inhabitants of Vraja gone with their sons? ”    [62] atha sarve yathā jñ ā payantī ti vidrutya punaḥ saṅ gatya saṁ hatya pratyabhā ṣ anta—sarvadaiva sarva-daivata-mā nya! ś atamanyo! manyā mahe te sarve ś ata-parva-sagarbha-vidyud-vahninā pralī natā m eva nī tā ḥ, yad bahir na hi vilokyante |   All the servants again swiftly departed with his order, and returned. Together they answered “O Indra! We recognize that you are the leader of the devatā s. The people of Vraja have all been turned to ashes by the fire of lightning and therefore we cannot see them outside. ”   [63] indra sa-harṣ am uvā ca—ā yuṣ madbhir yuṣ mā bhir punar api nirū pyatā m |   Indra said in joy “May you live long. But search again. ”   [64] atha tathā punaḥ saṅ gatya gaty-antaraṁ prathayā mā suḥ —divī ś vara, nā dyā pi te naś varatā ṁ prā ptā ḥ, pratyuta pā tā latala iva giri-garta-tale praviś ya tad diś antī vā nanda-kolā halaṁ kurvantaḥ pratī yante | acalaś ca svayaṁ balā nuja-hasta-nyasta-prā ya-grā va-nikā ya-maya-kā yatayā pratī yate |   They again returned and explained an alternative version. “O lord of Svarga! They have not been destroyed even now. Entering a hole like Pā tā la in the mountain, they can be seen enjoying like anything there. And the mountain is resting on the hand of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a like a pile of stones. ”     [65] indra uvā ca—lakṣ ayā mi | mayā pū rvaṁ chinna-pakṣ atir apy asau punaḥ kiṁ sa-pakṣ aḥ sampannaḥ, yata eva garvavā n sa parvataḥ sarvatas teṣ ā m akṣ ayā ya pakṣ apā tam ā cacā ra? bhavatu nā ma, tam enaṁ punar nihrā di-hrā dinī -vahni-prahā reṇ a saṁ hā re yojayā mi, yena tadī ya-tale valamā natayā labdhā valepā s te’pi tū rṇ am eva cū rṇ atā m ā sā dayanti iti |   Indra said “Here is what I think. Previously I cut off the wings of the mountain. Can it get new wings since it has become partial to the inhabitants of Vraja? In any case I am prepared to kill it with the fire from a roaring thunderbolt. The proud people under the mountain will be crushed! ”   [66] tathā ca, tad-vajreṇ a biddhaṁ vidhā ya praṇ idhā na-dvā rā tad anyathā praṇ idhā ya, manasi kopa-prakopam ā dhā ya, muhur api tad eva sandhā ya, vyarthatā -kadarthita-puruṣ ā rthaḥ punar nū tana-dū ta-gaṇ aṁ prahā payann ā ha sma—are, nirū pyatā ṁ tirobhū ya, bhū yaḥ kiṁ tatra citram iva vartate, yenā ś aner api pracā raḥ sva-vyavahā rā d vyabhicā raṁ sañ cacā ra |
