  Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, who destroyed the pride of all people with good qualities, along with his friends, were gratified by blissful knowledge. Ś rī dā ma and others then showed the art of dancing as an offering to all cultured people.      [8] yatrā nanda-kandalitatayā svayam api labdha-tṛ ṣ ṇ ā ḥ kṛ ṣ ṇ ā dayas tadī ya-ś ikṣ ā -parī kṣ aṇ ā ya sudurgama-tā lā di-dharā s tat-parikarā eva babhū vuḥ |   Because the dancing produced great bliss, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a with enthusiasm accompanied them with difficult rhythms to test their skill.   [9] ataevoktam ṛ ṣ iṇ ā —          kvacin nṛ tyatsu cā nyeṣ u gā yakau vā dakau svayam |        ś aś aṁ satur mahā rā ja sā dhu sā dhv iti vā dinau || [BhP 10. 18. 13] iti |   Ś ukadeva says: While the other boys were dancing, O King, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a and Balarā ma would sometimes accompany them with song and instrumental music, and sometimes the two Lords would praise the boys, saying, “Very good! Very good! ”    [10] atha goṣ u gocaratā m atī tā su tataś calitavantas te—          bilvaiḥ kumbhaiḥ kara-sthā malaka-samudayais tā ḍ ayanto mithas te        hā saṁ hā saṁ mṛ gehā vikira-bhaṇ itibhir dardurā di-plutā dyaiḥ |        asparś i-sparś anā rthaṁ nayana-parivṛ ter mocanaiḥ kṛ ṣ ṇ a-rā jya-        syandolī -siṁ ha-pī ṭ hā dy-adhikṛ tija-sukhair ninyire yā ma-vargam ||13|| [ś ā rdū lavikrī ḍ ita] When the cows disappeared they played. They hit each other with bilva, kumbha and small ā malaki fruits. Laughing, they imitated the animals, the sounds of birds and the hopping of frogs. Kṛ ṣ ṇ a spent four praharas in waves of bliss in ruling from a king’s throne and by taking off the blindfold of a person so he could touch the person who blind folded him.   tatra ca—        nṛ patir ajani kṛ ṣ ṇ aḥ stokakṛ ṣ ṇ aḥ pradhā naṁ                    subala-saciva-rā masyā pi tadvan nṛ patvam |        ubhaya-bala-patī ś rī dā ma-bhadrā v itī daṁ                    vidha-vividhatayā tau rā ṣ ṭ ra-lakṣ mī m akā rṣ ṭ ā m ||14|| [mā linī ]   Kṛ ṣ ṇ a played the king, Stoka-kṛ ṣ ṇ a played the minister, while Balarā ma played another king and Subala played his minister. Ś rī dā ma and Bhadra were the commanders of the army. In this way the two brothers ruled their kingdoms.          kvacit sthā naṁ kvacid yā naṁ kvā py arthe sandhi-vigrahau |        parā jaya-jayau kvā pi krī ḍ ā yā m anucakratuḥ ||15|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]   Sometimes they would stay in one place, sometimes march to war, sometimes make peace, sometimes fight, sometimes be victorious and sometimes be defeated.          evaṁ tau loka-siddhā bhiḥ krī ḍ ā bhiś ceratur vane |        nady-adri-droṇ i-kuñ jeṣ u kā naneṣ u saraḥ su ca || [BhP 10. 18. 16]   In this way Kṛ ṣ ṇ a and Balarā ma played all sorts of well-known games as they wandered among the rivers, hills, valleys, bushes, trees and lakes of Vṛ ndā vana.   [11] tad evaṁ sthite dina-katipaye ca prasthite kadā cid ahar-mukha eva pū rva-pū rva-pū rvadeva-nirvā paṇ a-bhṛ ta-nibhṛ ta-cintā -kṛ ta-mati-bhraṁ ś asya kaṁ sasya svayam abhyā saṁ pralamba-nā mā deva-dhrug abhyā jagā ma | abhyā gamya ca praṇ amya vyaktam eva tam anuyuktavā n—deva, tava keyaṁ paridevanā balavad ā vartamā nā dṛ ś yate?   In this situation, after some days, one morning Kaṁ sa began to think deeply about the deaths of his demon associates and became perplexed. Pralambha approached Kaṁ sa, offered respects and asked “O king! Why are you lamenting? ”   [12] kaṁ sa uvā ca—na jā nā si? mamā nvag-bhū ya sthitaṁ viś iṣ ṭ aṁ kiṁ vā vaś iṣ ṭ am?   Kaṁ sa said “Do you not know? Those who assisted me are all dead. Who remains? ”   [13] pralamba uvā ca—bhavatu, mā m api yā mam ekaṁ vyā pā raya | kaṁ sas tu tuṣ ṇ ī m-bhū ya dū yamā na-vadanaḥ kṣ aṇ am ā sī t |   Pralamba said “Anyway, just engage me for an hour. ”   Kaṁ ṣ a remained silent for a moment shaking his head.   [14] pralamba uvā ca—deva, katham iva |   Pralamba said “O lord, what is this? ”   [15] kaṁ saḥ sa-vairasyaṁ vihasya tasya tatra pataṅ gatā ṁ vibhā vayann uvā ca—tvam apy atamasi prajvalaj-jvalana-vartmani vartanī yaḥ |   Kaṁ sa, laughing with distaste, thinking of Pralamba as a moth, said “You may tread the path of the blazing flame. ”   [16] pralambaḥ sa-krodham uvā ca—aho, sarvaṅ kaṣ a-jvā lasya kā lasya mahimā himā calam api jvalayati, yadā ś ritā ṁ s taḍ ā gā ṁ ś ca tā ḍ ayati |   Pralamba said in anger “Oh! The cruel flame of time burns up the Himalayas and dries up the lake on it. ”    [17] kaṁ sa uvā ca—bhavatu yathā bhavad-icchā |   Kaṁ sa said “Let that be. Do as you wish. ”   [18] iti niś amya tam ā namya tad-avamā nitaś ca tadaiva daiva-sandā nitatayā kṛ tā vilambaḥ pralambas tā dṛ ś a-krī ḍ ā -pareṣ u ś rī -kṛ ṣ ṇ a-vareṣ u bā la-nikareṣ u prā pta-dū ra-bhū r vicā ritavā n—          tā v imau sukumā rau ca sarva-mā rau kumā rau yau |        sahasā rahasā yena yena kaṁ sā d agaṁ sā tā m ||16|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]   Hearing this, offering respects to Kaṁ sa, insulted by Kaṁ sa, without delay, Pralamba, bound by fate, wandered some distance to the spot where Kṛ ṣ ṇ a was playing.   “These are the two young boys who have killed all the demons. I have met with them by coming quickly from Kaṁ sa in secret. ”   [19] sarvo’py asau sarva-cā lena kā lena ghaṭ ita-kaṭ hinatā bhyā m ā bhyā ṁ carvita-garvaḥ saṁ vṛ ttaḥ, tad adya samasta-vā sara-visṛ mara-vihā ra-visaraja-viś vā sa-prapañ canayā vañ cayan bandhuvad eva skandha-dvaye hasta-dvaya-kṛ ta-bandhaṁ dvayam api prakṣ ipya kṣ ipram eva bhojarā ja-parisaraṁ parisamupahariṣ yā mi iti |   “Their pride will be crushed by being killed by irrevocable time. Today I will fool them by producing great faith in them. I will fervently play with them as they do on all days. Acting like a friend, I will bind the two boys up by the hands and, throwing them on my shoulders, deliver them to Kaṁ sa. ”    [20] atha sa tu kalkī valkī kṛ ta-kaccaratā di-pracchanna-sparś a-veś atayā pū rvaṁ goṣ ṭ ham ā gatya parito dṛ ṣ ṭ iṁ vitatya veś ma-sthita-gopa-bā la-viś eṣ a-veṣ aṁ samū hya tam eva ca vyū hya miś rī -bhavituṁ ś iś rī ṣ an hasann eva tatra praviṣ ṭ aḥ paridṛ ṣ ṭ aś ca kṛ ṣ ṇ ena |   Clothed as a thief, covered in profuse evil, filled with faults, Pralamba came to the cow village and, looking around, and put on a cowherd dress lying in a house. Laughing to please them and mix with them, he then entered the group. But Kṛ ṣ ṇ a saw him.   [21] dṛ ṣ ṭ vā ca tac-chalam evā svaccha-svacchalā yā valambya—bhadra, kathaṁ vilambam ā lambathā s, tathā pi bhadraṁ dudyū ṣ ā -samaya eva samayitas tvam asi iti vihasya tad-anukṛ ta-gopa-bā la-sambandha-viś eṣ a-sambandhaṁ parihasya ca bahu-paritoṣ itena tena saha sahacaratvaṁ balasya bala-nirjayā rtham eva kalayā ñ cakre | ū ce ca—adyā rabhya, sabhya, mama parama-suhṛ d bhavā n eva | tvā m aham akṣ i-gatatayā sthā payiṣ yā mi | ś rī dā mā rā mam evā nvetu, sa kila hy antar-vardhana-spardhaḥ spardhana-gaṇ am evā rhati iti |   Seeing him, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a went along with his disguise. “O Bhadra! Why are you late? It is good that you are coming at the height of fun. ” Laughing in this way at the calamity of disguising oneself as a cowherd, he gained Pralamba’s confidence and made friends with him to defeat Balarā ma’s strength. He then said “O friends, starting today, you are my best friend. I will always keep you in my sight. Let Ś rī dā ma side with Balarā ma, who has great competitive spirit. He is a suitable partner for you. ”    [22] sa tu kratubhuk-ś atrus tatra nirvismayam eva kusmayam ā natayā tathā sthitaḥ, yataḥ —          viś vacikī r api sa vidhiḥ pipaṭ hī r yasmā d bhavet tasmin |        ko vā caturaṁ -manyaḥ prathayatu nija-cā turī ṁ kṛ ṣ ṇ e ||17|| [upagī ti]   Giving up dismay, the demon became more arrogant: Since he who desires to create the universe desires to learn the truth from Kṛ ṣ ṇ a,   What person who thinks himself clever can outwit Kṛ ṣ ṇ a?   [23] athā rbhaka-samudayaṁ vibhā ga-dvayam ayaṁ vidhā ya taṁ ca pralambaṁ sva-bala-parivṛ ḍ hatayā dṛ ḍ haṁ nidhā ya tatra ca sa-matsaram iva bala-pralambau ś rī dā mā tmā nau mithaḥ pratisaṅ ghaṭ ṭ inau saṅ ghaṭ ayya parā n api sajū ḥ -kurvā ṇ atayā tathā praghaṭ ayā parā jitā nā ṁ ca ś atā ya parikrī tā nā m api vā hakatvaṁ prakaṭ ayya saṅ garā ya kṛ ta-saṅ garaḥ sa mā dhavo vividha-krī ḍ ā -niviḍ amanā babhū va |   The Kṛ ṣ ṇ a divided the boys into two groups and made Pralamba the head of his group in order to increase his strength. With great enthusiasm Balarā ma fought with Pralamba and Ś rī dā ma fought with Kṛ ṣ ṇ a. In this sway they fought, taking the help of unlimited friends. Those who were defeated had to carry the winners on their shoulders like a load of goods that has been purchased. In this way Kṛ ṣ ṇ a became absorbed in the competition.   tataś ca—        avrī ḍ a-krī ḍ atā yā ṁ jayavad itarayor vā hayanto vahantas        tasmin vā hā nukartṝ ṁ s turaga-tulanayā hā sayanto hasantaḥ |        maryā dā nirṇ aye tu prathita-kali-kulaṁ vā dayanto vadantaḥ prā pur bhā ṇ ḍ ī ram ete vanavana-bhuvi gā ś cā layantaś calantaḥ ||18|| [sragdharā ] In that unrestricted play, those who won were carried and those who were defeated were the bearers. Looking like horses, they laughed and made others laugh. Without consideration of respect they quarreled with each other. In this way they moved from forest to grove and came to Bhā ṇ ḍ ira banyan tree.   [24] tad evaṁ kutū hale tu prabale balaṁ pralamba-skandhā rū ḍ haṁ sandhā tuṁ jita-bhujaga-bhujaḥ ś rī -balā nujaḥ parā bhavam agaṇ ayan durbalam adurbalam avicitya svī kṛ taṁ svagaṇ am eva parā bhā vayā mā sa |   When the playing became intense, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, in order to have Pralamba carry Balarā ma on his shoulders, not caring if he was defeated or considering who was strong or weak, made his own group accept defeat.   [25] tasyā pā tatas tu vahanā yamā nā nā ṁ mano-glā niḥ syā d iti svam api tathā cakā ra, tataś ca—          ū he kṛ ṣ ṇ aḥ ś rī dā mā naṁ daityaḥ sa ś rī -rā mā khyā nam |        anyo’py anyaṁ ś ū raṁ -manyaḥ sarvaḥ proce dhanyo dhanyaḥ ||19|| [vidyunmā lā ]   Thinking that it was difficult for others to carry by themselves, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a also carried someone. Kṛ ṣ ṇ a carried Ś rī dā ma and Pralamba carried Balarā ma. Others, thinking themselves strong, carried other boys. All said “This is really good. ”          pū rvaṁ kṛ ṣ ṇ aḥ kautuke yena dṛ ṣ ṭ aḥ                    saumyaḥ paś cā d rā makarṣ e tu bhī ṣ maḥ        ity evā yaṁ sa pralambas tu paryaṅ -                    maryā dā taḥ paryagā t taṁ pragṛ hya ||20|| [ś ā linī ]   Though at first Pralamba showed attraction to Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, when he carried Balarā ma away, he became fearful of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a. Pralamba thus took Balarā ma far away from the play area.          rā maḥ krī ḍ ā viṣ ṭ atā ś liṣ ṭ a-bodhas                    taṁ nā jñ ā sī d dṛ ṣ ṭ a-mā traṁ ca kṛ ṣ ṇ aḥ |        pū rvaḥ prā yeṇ ā rjutā -bhitta-cittaḥ                    paś cā d-bhā vī cā turī -sandhurī ṇ aḥ ||21|| [ś ā linī ]   Absorbed in playing, Balarā ma did not manifest his power of knowledge and did not recognize the demon. Kṛ ṣ ṇ a understood the demon just by looking at him. Balarā ma remained undisturbed as before, and Kṛ ṣ ṇ a was skilful at tricking the demon.   [26] atha tathā pi giri-nivaha-nibha-vahala-sā ratā -vaha-durvaha-svabhā vatā -bhā vita-saṅ karṣ aṇ a-vapuḥ -karṣ aṇ a-jā ta-dharṣ aṇ a-vaś ā n niviḍ a-pī ḍ itatayā vrī ḍ ita-cittatayā ca sa punaḥ punar ī ḍ itaṁ -manyaḥ svam akharvaṁ pū rva-siddhaṁ pū rvadeva-vapur ā virbhā vayā mā sa |   But Pralamba began to suffer as he carried Balarā ma, who was heavier than a mountain range. The proud demon, with embarrassed mind, then manifested his previous huge body.          yarhi rā mam avahad danoḥ sutaḥ                    ś ubhra-dhā ma-vapuṣ aṁ tamaḥ -prabhaḥ |        indu-hā ri tama ity amuṁ tadā                    divya-loka-nikaras tv amanyata ||22|| [rathoddhatā ]   When the black demon carried Balarā ma, white like the moon, the devatā s thought that Rā hu was carrying away the moon.          tasmin kiñ cit trā sam ā pannavā n sa                    jyeṣ ṭ haḥ paś yan drā k kaniṣ ṭ hasya vaktram |        tad bhrā myad-bhrū -lī layā labdha-dṛ ṣ ṭ ir                    duṣ ṭ aṁ muṣ ṭ yā tā ḍ ayat suṣ ṭ hu mū rdhni ||23|| [ś ā linī ]   Suddenly feeling a little fear, Balarā ma looked at Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s face. Understanding everything by the movement of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s brow, Balarā ma then hit the demon’s head with his fist.          tataḥ prahata-mastakaṁ rudhira-rū ṣ itaṁ tad vapuḥ                    patat tulitam ujjahat pratihari drutaṁ pupluve |        yathā ñ jana-mahī -dharaṁ dalitam akta-rakta-dravaṁ                    tyajan dravati vajrakaḥ sapadi vajra-pā ṇ iṁ prati ||24|| [pṛ thvī ]   As a thunderbolt leaves a black mountain streaked with red minerals and returns to the hand of Indra, the soul of the demon gave up the dark body stained with blood and went to Viṣ ṇ u.          pralamba-patanaṁ dū re pralambā ryā ptir antike |        ubhe te yugapad dṛ ṣ ṭ e jajñ ā te smita-vismitī ||25|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]   Seeing simultaneously Pralamba fall far away and Balarā ma approaching close, everyone smiled with astonishment.          bā ṣ pa-ś liṣ ṭ atayā tasminn ā ś liṣ ṭ au bhrā tarau mithaḥ |        yā vā ś liṣ yā rdratā ṁ yā tā bandhutā bahir antaram ||26|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]                               The two brothers, with tears in their eyes, embraced. Their friendship on embracing produced melting internally and externally.                                                                                                                    mahā -ravaṁ kṛ tavati ca pralambake                    tadā drutaṁ mṛ tavati ca dyavi sthitā ḥ |        sunirvṛ tā vavṛ ṣ ur alaṁ kulaṁ                    vyatarkayann upahasitiṁ harer api ||27|| [rucirā ]   When Pralamba died with a thunderous roar, the devatā s situated in heaven showered him with flowers in joy and joked about him.          vā haka-ś irasi praharaṇ am atrā diṣ ṭ aṁ sadā vihṛ tau |        maryā dā tikrā ntā pralamba bhavatā tathā tu nā smā bhiḥ ||28|| [udgī ti]   “He gave the order to hit the demon on the head in order to play continuously. O Pralamba! We do not transgress respect like you. ”   [27] tad evaṁ pralambā lambhana-sambhrame’py anudbhrā nta-cittā s te ś ṛ ṅ ginī -vittā ḥ kuṇ apatā m itasya pramī tasya tasya pitṛ -vana-veś aṁ pradeś a-leś aṁ parityajya yojana-vyajya-vistā ra-praś asta-bhā ṇ ḍ ī ra-tala-maṇ ḍ alam evā dhiṣ ṭ hā ya vihā ra-niṣ ṭ hā ḥ krī ḍ ā paṇ asya spṛ hayā yyā jayā yyā gṛ hayā yyā s tṛ ṇ alobhā viṣ ṭ a-tayā vṛ kṣ a-ṣ aṇ ḍ ā d viprakṛ ṣ ṭ ā m api yamunā cchā naccha-muñ jā ṭ avī ṁ praviṣ ṭ ā nā m andhī -bhū tā nā ṁ pā da-bandhanā nā m anveṣ aṇ ā d viś leṣ am ā jagmuḥ | tataḥ katham apy avadhā nataḥ pranaṣ ṭ a-cittatayā spaṣ ṭ a-kaṣ ṭ a-cittā raṁ hasā saṅ ghaś aḥ sabhayaṁ hvayante sma |   Though some disturbance was caused by the death of Pralamba, the cowherd boys left the place where he was killed, polluted like a crematorium ground, and went to play under Bhā ṇ ḍ ī ra’s huge expanse of branches extending four kroś as. When the frolicking boys desired to return home, the cows had strayed far off desiring grass and had entered a grove of dirty reeds on the bank of the Yamunā flowing with abundant water. The boys began searching for the cows that were lost and trapped in the reeds. Realizing they had lost the cows, the boys gathered together quickly in lamentation fearfully calling for the cows.   [28] nū naṁ deś ā dhipati-nideś ataḥ sadeś am ā gatā eva kecit krū rā gā dū ragā vidadhur iti ca dhyā yanti sma |   They began to think that some cruel rascal on the order of Kaṁ sa had come and taken the cows.   [29] tataś ca gavā ṁ khurā di-cihnair ahnā ya tā sā m adhvā naṁ labdhvā samastā eva tā harir ahvā sta,   Understanding their path by seeing their hoof marks, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a called the cows.   yathā —        kṛ ṣ ṇ e taṭ ā gram adhiruhya suvarṇ a-varṇ a-                    valgū ttarī yam anughū rṇ ya vitī rṇ ahutau |        gā vaḥ pratisvam abhinedur udī rṇ a-tā pā                    garjat-taḍ id-ghana-ghanā ghana-tṛ ṣ ṇ ayeva ||29|| [vasantatilakā ]   He climbed a high bank, waved his yellow cloth and called out loudly. The cows then made sounds like the cā taka bird which had suddenly attained water laden clouds rumbling with thunder and flashing with lightning.   [30] tad evaṁ yadā lambhi cā stambhi ca naicikī nicayas tadā nī m eva ca dṛ ṣ ṭ a-nirvilamba-pralamba-pralaya-carā ḥ kaṁ sa-carā labdhā vasarā muñ jā ṭ avī m udbhaṭ a-ceṣ ṭ atayā veṣ ṭ ayitvā nirnivā raṇ a-kṛ pī ṭ a-kā raṇ a-vṛ ṣ ṭ iṁ jhaṭ iti tā dṛ ś a-duṣ ṭ a-vauṣ aṭ -kā rā spada-tad-vilakṣ aṇ a-tejasi tasmin pratipakṣ atā -kalpanayā nisṛ ṣ ṭ avantaḥ |   When Kṛ ṣ ṇ a approached the cows and was standing there, assistants of Kaṁ sa, seeing that Pralamba had been destroyed, took the opportunity and surrounded the reed grove in force. With enmity they created a inescapable shower of fire with extraordinary heat produced by evil mantras.   [31] yā khalu jvā la-kalayā pi sarvaṁ roṣ ā d oṣ ā mā sa kalpam iti prajvalati mahā -jvalane paṭ a-paṭ ā yamā nā yā ṁ ca mahā -muñ jā ṭ avyā ṁ bhī tatayā sta-vyasta-cā lā s te gopā lā ḥ sakhi-valayā rā matayā kalita-keli-jā lā v iha rā ma-gopā lā v eva bhū ri-dū rataḥ ś araṇ atayā samupā jagmuḥ |   The fire burned angrily, throwing off sparks and, blazing up, scorching the reed grove with a sizzling sound. The cows became frightened. They gathered together and separated in panic. Kṛ ṣ ṇ a and Balarā ma, as if absorbed in playing, from far off gave shelter to their friends since they were their protectors.   tatra ca—        dā vā gniṁ dṛ ṣ ṭ vā te yadapi hari-rakṣ ā paratayā                    samī yur vaiyagryaṁ tadapi nija-rakṣ ā m avṛ ṇ uta |        prasaktis tasyetthaṁ kila bhavati sā ced uyate                    tadā ś aktiś cā sya prabhavati yathecchaṁ muhur iti ||30|| [ś ikhariṇ ī ]   Though they desired to protect Kṛ ṣ ṇ a when they saw the fire, his friends prayed to him for their protection. When his desire to protect them arose, that prayer became evident.   yathā —        kṛ ṣ ṇ a kṛ ṣ ṇ a mahā -vī rya he rā mā mita-vikrama |        dā vā gninā dahyamā nā n prapannā ṁ s trā tum arhathaḥ || [BhP 10. 19. 9] ityā di   O Kṛ ṣ ṇ a! Kṛ ṣ ṇ a! Most powerful one! O Rā ma! You whose prowess never fails! Please save your devotees, who are about to be burned by this forest fire and have come to take shelter of you!   [32] tad evaṁ dū rā gatā nā ṁ kā rpaṇ ya-paṇ ya-bhaṇ ita-ś ravaṇ am ā rabhya tasmā d abhyā sa-gatā nā m api bhayam upalabhya ś rī mā n kṛ ṣ ṇ as tv idaṁ sasaṁ rambhaṁ bhā vayā mā sa—   When they came close, he heard their pain and their words of praise. Coming to them, he understood their fear. In anger he began to think:          ā tmano’py alam amī mama priyā                    hā davaṁ prati davaṁ samiyrati |        gī rṇ am eva karavā ṇ y amuṁ tataḥ                    ko yamaḥ ka iha vā bhaved haraḥ ||31|| [rathoddhatā ]   These friends are dearer to me than myself. Seeing the forest fire they have become frightened. I will devour the fire, which Yama and Ś iva cannot do.   [33] kintu mayā vaiś vā nara-nigaraṇ aṁ na soḍ huṁ parivṛ ḍ hā bhaveyur ete iti vicintya provā ca—mā bhaiṣ ṭ a netra-puṭ aṁ tv anudghaṭ itaṁ ghaṭ ayata iti |   But my friends will not be able to endure me swallowing fire. He then said “Oh! Do not be afraid. Please close your eyes. ”   [34] nimī lad-vilocaneṣ u ca teṣ u tad-ā veś a-vaś ayā kṛ ta-praveś ayā yogamā yayā tat-kā la-kalpita-mahā -jaladhara-kalpā para-ś arī ras tatratyenā nalpenā nanena tam aduḥ khata eva sarvaṁ vibhrakṣ antaṁ bhakṣ itavā n |   When they had closed their eyes, with concentration, using Yogamā yā, he produced a body like a huge rain cloud. With its huge mouth he devoured the forest fire without difficultly.     [35] tathā tad-icchayā sudhā -culukā yamā nam ity eke | tayaivaṁ cā nyad api cakā ra | yad uktaṁ —          tataś ca te’kṣ ī ṇ y unmī lya punar bhā ṇ ḍ ī ram ā pitā ḥ |        niś ā mya vismitā ā sann ā tmā naṁ gā ś ca mocitā ḥ || iti | [BhP 10. 19. 13]   Some say that by his desire the fire became like a drop of nectar. By his desire something else was accomplished:   The cowherd boys opened their eyes and were amazed to find not only that they and the cows had been saved from the terrible fire but that they had all been brought back to the Bhā ṇ ḍ ī ra tree.          atha dhenu-tatiṁ vinivartya harir                    bala-yuktatayā muralī ṁ kalayan |        sahacā ri-gaṇ a-prathitā tma-yaś ā                    vrajam ā gatavā n ahani glapite ||32|| [toṭ aka]   Retrieving the cows, Kṛ ṣ ṇ a, playing his flute in the company of Balarā ma and spreading his glory among his friends, returned to Vraja in the evening.          gavā ṁ dhū lir nā daḥ khura-ghaṭ ita-ghaṭ ṭ a-dhvani-ghaṭ ā        hares tā sā ṁ hū tiḥ ś ravaṇ a-gaṇ a-bhid-veṇ u-raṇ itam |        amī bhis te kṛ ṣ ṭ ā s taratamatayā gokula-janā        na pṛ ṣ ṭ hyaṁ nā grī yaṁ na samam avidur na svam api ||33|| [ś ikhariṇ ī ]   The cows dust rose in the air and their hooves sounded. He called the cows and played his flute, which entered the ears of everyone. Attracted by the sound and dust, the citizens of Gokula did not know what was behind, in front or beside them, and were unaware of themselves.            yadyapi bahu-saṅ ghaṭ ṭ ana-dhū li-dhvā ntaṁ ca sarvatra |        tadapi harer mukha-candraḥ pratijanam ā nanditaṁ cakre ||34|| [upagī ti]   When people came from all directions, they made the sky dark with dust. But Kṛ ṣ ṇ a’s moon-like face made them all happy.   [36] atha pū rvavan mā tara-pitarā di-racita-sukha-vitarau bhrā tarau nija-nilayaṁ praviviś atuḥ |   After giving joy to Nanda, Yaś odā and their friends, the two brothers entered their house.   [37] sakhā yaś ca pralamba-davā nala-kathā -prathanayā sarvaṁ vismā yayā mā suḥ |   The boys’ friends, telling about Pralamba and the forest fire, astonished everyone.   [37] tad etat procya samā panam ā ha sma—          ī dṛ ś as tava gopendra putraḥ puṇ ya-kṛ ta-stavaḥ |        premā rdraḥ suhṛ dā ṁ yas tu dā vā gnim api pī tavā n ||35|| [anuṣ ṭ ubh]   The story was finished when the narrator said “O Nanda! By good acts you have given birth to a son who swallowed a forest fire out of love for his friends. ”
