The fifth annual RANEPA conference on the future of global governance is organized by the Center for International Institutions Research (CIIR) of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) (https: //www. ranepa. ru/eng/ciir-ranepa) with expert support of the G20 Research Group of the University of Toronto (http: //www. g20. utoronto. ca/), Italian Institute for International Political Studies (https: //www. ispionline. it/en) and BRICS Research Group (http: //www. brics. utoronto. ca/).

The Conference brings together representatives of academic community, think tanks and government structures of the G20 and the BRICS member countries.

Questions for discussion

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and cooperate. The global governance environment transformed radically due to digital technologies and the obvious failure to produce a timely, coordinated international response from the major multilateral organizations.  However, in the current highly uncertain outlook for the global economy recovery, the focus on national concerns and preference for unilateral and bilateral, rather than multilateral actions, more than ever we need global cooperation and coordination to deal with the double-pronged crisis and restore global economic stability. Will the G20 deliver on its emergency summit commitment to protect human life and lay out solid foundations for strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth? Will international cooperation move to new levels “to deliver the global public goods urgently needed by a world beginning to understand that it is both far more interdependent and far more fragile than ever. ”[1] What are the immediate priorities for the major international institutions – the G20, BRICS, UN, IMF, World Bank, OECD, and regional groupings?  What should be the governance in the post COVID world? What international architecture is needed by the digital economy and society?

The participants of the conference will discuss the impact of COVID-19 and dramatic digitalization on international cooperation, emerging trends and approaches to digital economy regulation, key global governance institutions’ role in shaping the rules of the game for a new era, as well as the outlook of global governance in the digital world.
