Warm-up

1. Use this photo to introduce the topic of this lesson and to check how many Christmas- related words your students know.

Encourage stronger students to write more than three sentences. Let weaker students to note down single words or short expressions rather than full sentences.

After two minutes, check the answers.

2. Put students into pairs. Give them a few minutes to read the words and look at the photo. If appropriate, let students use their smartphones to check the meaning of any new words. Alternatively, pre-teach some of the items.

Extra Idea

Make sure that students understand what a cracker is. Explain that although most people buy their crackers, it is possible to make them at home. You can play a video on YouTube and show them how to make a cracker.

3. Make sure that students know what they have to do in this exercise. Ask them to work on their own first and then compare their answers in pairs.

Extra Idea

Ask students to work in their pairs and write definitions of two other words from Exercise 2. Check if other students can guess the right words.

4. Let students work in the same pairs as before. Explain that they have to look at the photo in Exercise 1 and complete the sentences with the words from Exercise 2.

5. This is a typical exam task as students have to complete the text with the words in the box.

Ask students to read the message to check who sent it (Jack's mother). Then, they read the text again and do the exam task. Remind students that they only need four of the words from the box. Check the answers with the class.
