Cost Breakdown Of Shipping A Car From The US To Canada

Cost Breakdown Of Shipping A Car From The US To Canada

You can either drive the car to Canada or use a Canadian car shipping company to streamline everything and make your life 10x easier. The cost to ship a car using an auto transport service may be a little high, but the convenience and time saving will be worth every penny. Although there are a lot of moving parts that the car transport company has to deal with to provide you with a one, ready-to-be-paid price tag, here’s what goes behind the scenes:

Here Are a Few Important Car Shipping Costs to Consider:

Distance Cost Per Mile:

The car shipping cost is always mostly based on the distance travelled from point A to B. However, it decreases with increasing miles. Here’s a general idea of what to expect:

● 500 to 1000 mile: $1 to $1.5

● 1000 to 1500 miles: $0.75 to $0.9

● 1500+ miles: $0.55 to $0.65

These are just general estimates, and you may find different prices depending on the car transport company, but the difference will not be huge – it’ll be pretty close to these. So to keep to structure the full cost breakdown in an easy-to-understand way, we’ll take the example of transporting a car from Florida to Ontario.

The distance from FL to ON; 1640 miles, which means the third tier cost of $0.55 applies here. So, $0.55 x 1640 = $900 is the base cost for transporting a standard sedan from Florida to Ontario.

Car Type:

Now, what if you don’t want to transport a Sedan, but an SUV, or maybe a truck? Or a vehicle that has higher dimensions than both? Well, in that case, you typically add $150 to $200 with each jump in vehicle type, depending on the size. So, for instance:

If the base cost for transporting a regular sedan from the US to Canada has turned out to be $900 (FL to ON), then transporting an SUV might cost you $1050. If you’re transporting a truck, add $150 more, which means $1200.

Transport Type:

There are two common car transport types; Open and Enclosed. The former one is set by default where your car will be transported on top of an open carrier. However, the latter is where the car is secured inside a container with a metal roof and walls for security from rain, snow, dirt, and other risks of being on the road.

If you choose an open carrier, the cost will not change, but you may be charged $300 to $400 extra for an enclosed carrier. However, this transport type is mostly used for expensive vehicles like collectible cars, luxury vehicles, sports cars and supercars.

Season:

Depending on the time of year, the costs will change. The cost will be 10-15% lower during fall but can be an all-time high during the peak of winter and summer, where you may have to pay $200 to $300 more than the usual car transport cost.
