Chapter 3. (to be the first+Full Infinitive/to be an eye-opener) 7. Questions for Discussion Chapter 2 a) Sum up the preliminary stages of searching for a candidate at ARC: the database and its coding system, standard requirements to potential recruits, ways of approaching them, etc. b) Speak about the corporate culture at ARC as shown in the chapter. Did Candida as a boss and her staff share the same attitude and commitment to work? What type of relations between the members of staff was encouraged by her? Was the climate in the company competitive or cooperative? What level of staff empowerment did Candida practise? Was open communication with her staff one of her fundamental management principles? What subjects were taboos in the company? Support your answers with the text of the chapter. Basing on the Commentary and your own knowledge, place Candida Redmayne as a company leader. c) What caused a slight strain between Teddy and Mike? How do you feel about the eternal dilemma of whether a woman should work or not and what should come first on her list of priorities: family or work? Is it possible to work around the clock and enjoy harmonious family relationships? d) Does Mike approve of Teddy’s eagerness to befriend with Glory, his buddy? What does he imply when blaming Teddy for “hanging on courtesy and manners”? When it comes to love, do you agree that opposites attract or should those in love have a lot in common? How true is it with regard to Teddy and Mike? e) Is the Candida, head of a high-profile, flourishing company, any different from the Candida back in 1984 as a patient at the psychiatrist’s? What in her story sounded fishy to the doctor? Whose shoulder do you cry on when life is hard on you? In times of trouble which is more important to you: to be listened to and pitied or to talk the situation over and work out a plan of action with your soul mate?
