Introduction

This study guide is a supplement to the Rachel’s English 30-Day Vocabulary Challenge! The Academic Word List is made up of the most common content words used across writing and speech in academic English. The whole list includes 570 word families; it is typically divided into 10 or 12 sublists. Sublist 1 (60 words) is made up of the most frequent word families; Sublist 2 is the next most frequent; and so on. This document takes you through Sublists 1 and 2 (all except for 15 words of sublist 1, which we already taught in previous videos -- see them here: video 1, video 2, video 3). We have given you the most common definitions associated with each word. If you want to make an exhaustive study of any particular word, we recommend using www.https://learnersdictionary.com/

I’m glad you’re here; I’m glad you’re doing this. Find a friend to study with. Discuss the definitions together, and make up sample sentences to share with each other. Studying this with a friend can really help you remember these words!
