Course Description
|
· The course is created on the basis of textbook “English language. 5th grade. ” By J. Komarova. It allows learners of A1-A2 level to level to build and develop their skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing).
· The aim of the course is to improve learners’ linguistic, cognitive and metacognitive, academic and study skills, and prepare them for further learning; to ensure that all learners acquire the skills which will lay a strong foundation for literacy and communication.
· To succeed in the course learners, need to get a mark at the end of each term and at the end of the course (3-5 mark).
· This course is using Web 2. 0 technologies on the basis of the internet source Learningapps. com, which allows creating a complex of various exercises, interactive tasks.

Purpose of the Course/Course rationale
|
The course is an obligatory school subject for all 5th grade learners of Secondary school № 36. It is a necessary part of a learning plan. This course is the transition step between elementary and middle school (the learners revise already learnt materials and preparing for further English learning).

Goals/Aims
|
By the end of this course the learners will be able:
· to communicate effectively in speaking, reading and writing in English (within the limits of syllabus)
· to express thoughts, ideas, experiences using learnt vocabulary.
The learners will:
· develop proficiency in English for the purposes of further education.
· develop a positive attitude towards English and towards other languages and cultures

General Objectives

· to revise and develop pronunciation skills.
· to practice various types of reading (for gist, for general understanding, for specific information, for detailed understanding);
· to develop learners’ listening sub-skills (for gist, for general understanding, for specific information);
· to practice learners’ oral fluency in class discussions and speaking activities; to develop students’ ability to express and explain his/her point of view using key vocabulary and grammar structures; to talk in some detail about familiar topics, tell simple stories, practice speaking activities using target structures.
· to develop learners writing skills through production a range of short texts on familiar topics.
· to familiarize learners with the information about the present-day themes
· to introduce, practice, and activate new lexical and grammatical items.
· to develop learner’s ability to use a dictionary.
· to familiarize learners with other countries cultures.

Course Assessment
|
Learners are assessed in the following way:
Formative assessment:
· The teacher checks learners home tasks and give marks for it.
· The learners have progress test after each module and get marks for it.
Summative assessment:
· At the end of each fourth the learners get a test and get marks for it.
· According to learners’ success during the term (all the above) the teacher gives marks.
· Learners get a final mark at the end of the course (according to term marks and other aspects of assessment)
Continuous assessment
· During every lesson the teacher monitors learners’ participation in the lesson and give marks for it.

| To evaluate students’ fields of difficulty and his/her current progress with the course.

Self- assessment
| The learners use “can do” statements for self-assessment.
|
Connection between assessment methods and the final mark
| At the end of the course a formal final mark is given (2-5) which include marks for each term and learners’ performance during the course.

Evaluation
|
Teacher ask learners reflection in oral or written form after every lesson.
At the end of each term teacher gives a detailed commentary on students’ performance during the course, explains theirs’ marks and points out problematic areas learners need to focus on.

Additional information

· This course is focusing on using ICT in the learning process. Learningapps. com mostly used to create exercises for learners’ home tasks, but can also be used during the lessons. The authentic material is used in creating the interactive tasks. The aim of using this source is to prove its effectivity compare with ordinary approaches to education (textbooks).
· Students are keeping their own glossary. At the end of the term the teacher checks the knowledge of vocabulary and give learners a mark.
· As self-reflection the learners use “can do” statements at every lesson. It helps the teacher to notice problematic areas and to measure the acquiring of material.

Grading System
|
At the end of the course and during the course every learner gets marks - 2, 3, 4, 5
Mark “2” (poor) means that the learner failed on this task/fourth/course and must consult the teacher and redo the task/test.
