The course is defined within the common reference European Framework and corresponds to the classic division into Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate.
The aim of the syllabus is to prepare students to use English for their professional studies in the Higher School of Economics and consequently for their professional needs in real life and work. This is realized as KET at Breakthrough level. This preparatory course will further give the students the opportunity to speak on general topics, to communicate in Business environment and to understand texts on business and finance in the English speaking world. This is realized at 2 different levels: ABC and Basic User (beginners). Course objectives: The main objectives of the syllabus are:
The overall aims of the course are: A) to enable the learner to communicate effectively and appropriately in real life situation; b) to use English effectively for study purpose across the curriculum; c) to develop an interest in and appreciation of Literature; d) to develop and integrate the use of the four language skills i. e. Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing; e) to revise and reinforce structure already learnt. The Student is able to: Ø pronounce English Correctly and intelligibly; Ø use appropriate word stress, sentence stress and elementary intonation patterns; Ø speak intelligibly while making statements, asking question, giving instructions and commands, reporting events. Ø put ideas in proper sequence; Ø narrate simple experiences and series of events to convey its essence and intention, Ø describe accurately what he/she observes and experiences; Ø converse in familiar social situations; and Ø use polite expressions in appropriate ways e. g. Excuse me, I beg your pardon etc.
