Engine failure:. Effects

  Engine failure:

Cause: Birdstrike; Engine on fire; Fuel problems or Low oil pressure

Background:

If an engine fails, the cockpit crew may take up to 10 mins to work through the checklist due to high work load.

If an engine failure occurs during departure, the ACFT will continue on a straight course until reaching between1. 000 and 1. 500 feet GND and will level off. With increasing speed the flaps will be retracted and the aircraft will climb to a safe altitude at which further decisions will be made.

An engine failure during cruise can result in a descent to maintain cabin pressure or to increase speed for an engine restart. (At higher speeds the amount of air increases thus enabling an efficient engine restart. ) Many aircraft need lower altitudes to start their APU.

Normally, wider turns to the side where the engine has failed are to be considered.

Effects

 (multi engine aircraft):

The loss of one engine on a multi-engine aircraft will reduce it’s power and the ability to fly normally - Departure can be expected to level off.

Propeller driven aircraft may even descend for a while to increase speed and adapt cabin pressure

High altitudes, above FL 200, may not be maintained

ACFT will prefer to fly straight and level and a larger turn radius can be expected.

Heavy workload in the cockpit will restrict the pilot’s ability to communicate with ATC.

(Single engine aircraft):

The engine failure of a single engine aircraft will be followed by the loss of electrical power, navigational systems, and communication systems and of cabin pressure.

Single engine aircraft are often small general aviation aircraft. Flight accident analysis of single engine failures has shown that a pilot error was the main cause.

Heavy workload in the cockpit may restrict the pilot’s ability to communicate with ATC
