Ex.9. HOW PEOPLE ARE HIRED (A) Read the text and fill in the table below:
Mr. Stone was a very clever doctor whose thoughts were always on learning. When he applied for a post of lecturer at Camford University, his friends had no doubt that he would get the job. Even though there were hundreds of candidates willing to try their luck, he made up his mind to take part in the competition. Arriving at Camford, a very small town, he learnt that the only hotel was already full. So, he had to stay in the same room with another candidate, a cheerful fellow called Adams, about twenty years younger. After the committee had listened to all the candidates only two of them, Mr. Stone and Mr. Adams, were chosen because it seemed impossible to decide who was more skillful. That is why, they were both asked to prepare a report on infectious diseases and to give a lecture on the subject in three days’ time. Mr. Stone almost stopped eating and sleeping. He worked day and night, arranging his thoughts, writing out and learning his lecture by heart. As for Adams, he didn’t seem to do any preparation. He spent most of his time playing tennis and going to the parties and did not return to his room till midnight. On the day of the lecture Mr. Stone, waiting for his turn to speak, discovered that his speech disappeared. Turning his head, he saw Adams take the stolen speech out of his pocket and heard him read it to the audience. Adams read it so well that when he finished there was a storm of applause. Mr. Stone was too much upset to express his ideas in a different way. Therefore, when his turn came, he could only repeat the same speech word for word, in a low voice. When the committee went out to decide who the successful candidate was, everyone was sure what their choice would be. However, when the Dean gave Mr. Stone’s name at last, nobody could believe it! They all had admired Mr. Adams’ remarkable speech so much! Asked for explanation, the Dean said: “The reason why we have chosen Mr. Stone is that he was able to repeat from memory a brilliant lecture he had never heard before. What a memory must he have! And a fine memory is quite necessary for his post.” As they walked out of the room, the Dean came up to Doctor Stone and, shaking his hand, said: “Congratulations, Mr. Stone! However, let me give you a piece of advice. Be more careful and don’t leave valuable papers lying about!”
Ex.10. HOW PEOPLE ARE HIRED (B) Choose the right answer only: 1) Mr. Stone’s friends had no doubts that he would get the job because… a) the Dean was one of his acquaintances. b) he was talented enough. c) everyone had given him much useful advice. d) he was the only candidate. 2) The committee asked both Mr. Stone and Mr. Adams to prepare a report and give a lecture on infectious diseases as… a) the subject was exiting to study. b) the students of the University hadn’t learnt this subject. c) the committee decided to find out which of the candidates was more skilful. d) the committee wanted more information about infectious diseases. 3) Mr. Stone had to repeat the speech after Mr. Adams because… a) Mr. Stone hadn’t prepared his own speech. b) Mr. Adams had stolen Mr. Stone’s lecture. c) Mr. Stone didn’t like the way Mr. Adams read the report. d) Mr. Stone didn’t want their lectures to differ. 4) Nobody doubted that Mr. Adams was the successful candidate for… a) he looked wise and skilful. b) he had brilliant ideas. c) he had read the lecture perfectly. d) Mr. Stone didn’t participate in the competition. 5) The Dean chose Mr. Stone for the job as… a) they were relatives. b) the Dean admired Mr. Stone’s memory. c) the Dean felt pity for Mr. Stone. d) the Dean guessed the real reason for Mr. Stone’s “failure”.
UNIT 3 MY WORKING DAY Ex.1. Read the text and fill in the table below: MY EVERYDAY ROUTINE Every day I have much interesting and necessary work to do. To be a good doctor in future means to study well at the University from the day of admission till the day of graduation. We must remember that we cannot be bad doctors as we will be responsible for the protection of people’s health and their lives. Our future work will require deep knowledge and all our abilities. To achieve these high aims the students of our group decided not to waste any time. So I always remember that the lost hour is never gained and that is why I do not like to waste even a minute. I get up early in the morning – at about 7 a.m., do my morning exercises and have a cold rubdown. As we are medical students we consider that physical exercises are “a good remedy” for the protection of our health against diseases. We must remember the Latin saying Mens sana in corpora sano. After my breakfast at our canteen I go to the main building of our University on foot as it is near to our hostel. Our classes usually begin at 09.00 a.m. In addition to several practical classes we have a lecture or two every day. So we finish our lessons at 05.00 p.m. We study many theoretical and special subjects. On Fridays we usually have a lecture in Physics. Long before its beginning there are always many students in the hall – even the students of the senior courses often attend these lectures. Our new professor is not only a very good specialist in his field of science but also a qualified teacher. He delivers lectures in his own way and gives us many new and interesting facts about the application of Physics in medicine. The professor shows us that at present deep knowledge of this subject will be particularly valuable in our future work. That is why we work hard in physics laboratory and read additional literature on this subject at the library as well. After my studies I usually go to our library or laboratory. From there I usually come back to the hostel. Sometimes I go in for sports or have club activities or attend different societies. I try to work in the evenings since I must get only good marks. I am often tired but I understand that every day which passes by gives me much valuable and necessary knowledge.

UNIT 4 SAINT-PETERSBURG STATE PEDIATRIC MEDICAL UNIVERSITY Ex.1. Study the following text and fill in the table below: SPbSPMU St.-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University was founded in 1925 as a Clinical Institute of Maternity and Child Welfare. Later it became a Research Institute. Only in 1932 it started teaching students. In 1935 it got the name “Leningrad (and then St.-Petersburg) Pediatric Medical Institute” which it kept until it was called an “Academy” in June 1994. In 2012 it became University. The Institute of Maternity and Child Welfare was established on the basis of the City Children’s Hospital built here in 1905. The first buildings of the Institute located along Litovskaya Street were designed for the Hospital by the architect M.I.Kitner. Litovskaya Street was named after the Litovsky regiment as its kitchen gardens occupied this area in 1830-40ies. St.-Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University trains pediatricians (children’s doctors). It has more than 4000 students, many of them coming here from the neighbouring countries and other places of the world. The students study six years. After their final year of internship at one of the city hospitals they get the pediatrician’s diploma and begin their work as children’s doctors. Some of the graduates are admitted to the post-graduate courses at the University or study here to get a specialization in a particular field of medicine. There are over 55 departments at the University. They are theoretical departments of Anatomy, Histology, Biology, Chemistry, Foreign Languages and others teaching mostly junior students. There are also many clinical departments like three Pediatric departments, Children’s Surgery and two Surgeries for adults, Children’s Infections, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Propedeutics of Children’s Diseases, Internal Diseases and many others. All the clinical departments are attached to the special clinics located not only in Litovskaya Street but also in various hospitals of the city. One of the oldest city’s hospitals, Mariinskaya Hospital houses most of the adult clinical departments. There is a children’s polyclinic and a women’s health centre attached to the University. They work as a large consultative centre. Patients from the whole city apply here. From 1925 to 1949 the Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute was successfully headed by a talented organizer professor Y.A.Mendeleva. Since then the tradition was to have women as rectors of the Institute (the one broken as late as in the 1980ies). Famous medical scientists and academicians worked here from its foundation. A.F.Tur, R.R.Vreden, K.K.Skrobansky, M.G.Danilevich and others carried out research and taught students here. Intensive research work is being carried out at different departments and clinics of the University. Almost every department has a specialized Students’ Scientific Circle where students conduct their investigations under the guidance of the University professors. Students’ Scientific Conferences are held annually by many departments of the University. Pediatric departments pay special attention to the pathology of the normal child development, physiology and pathology of the newborn. They investigate and treat digestive system diseases, kidney troubles, allergy, blood system disorders in children. Important investigations were conducted by the Nervous Diseases department. The vaccine for poliomyelitis was approbated here. Essential studies of cardio-vascular system diseases, cardiac arrhythmia are carried out at the department of Internal Diseases of adults.

Then suddenly the rope broke and Fox floated slowly to the surface. “Shark! Shark!” he called. B) Quickly he pushed his fingers into the shark’s eyes. The shark opened its mouth and Fox escaped, swimming as fast as possible to the surface. He thought he was safe, but when he looked down he saw the shark’s huge mouth just below him again. C) Near the end of the day he looked down and saw a large fish on the sand below him. He dived down to get it. Suddenly something hit him. It knocked the spear gun from his hand and pushed him through the water. He looked round and saw that he was in the mouth of a shark. It was a great white shark, one of the largest and most dangerous sharks in the world. D) Other spear-fishers heard him and hurried to help him. They lifted him carefully into a boat and took him to the beach. The nearest hospital was 60 kilometers away and during the long journey one of the spear-fishers held Fox’s insides in place. At the hospital he needed 462 stitches, but he survived. E) So he kicked the shark’s nose hard and it turned away. But then it attacked the fish on the buoy. It swallowed the buoy and the fish. It dived down and the rope on his belt pulled Fox under the water again. F) It was 2003 and Rodney Fox 20 years old was in the sea off the coast of South Australia. It was the annual spear-fishing championship. Fox did well that day. He caught a lot of fish and he tied them to a small buoy. There was a rope from the buoy to his belt. THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE STORY…
Ex.10. Read the rest of the story and check your ideas: Three months later Fox was back in the water. He started fishing again and this time he only hunted sharks. He wanted revenge. But he soon stopped and started to study them and photograph them instead. He realized that they are not dangerous animals. Dogs, bees and even pigs kill more people than sharks do. But sharks are in danger from people and the number of great white sharks is falling fast. So Rodney Fox started a campaign to protect the great white shark. And today he is studying surgery in one of the local medical institutes. He became older and understood that his life had been saved by a very good doctor. So he decided to become a doctor himself as he had had the chance to deal with the powerful influence of medicine.
Point for discussion: What helped you to choose your future profession? (you might come from the doctor’s family; you might be interested in medicine and love children; you might follow your parents’ advice; you might be influenced by some very good doctor; you might have had the chance to deal with some sick or ill person or some close friend or relative; you might be eager to have power over people; you might have had the possibility to help a person)

Ex.3. Write the letter to your American friend and suggest him arriving to our country for studying at our University.
Ex.4. Read the letter below and speak about your future profession: Petrova Anna Room 65 Hostel 1 Kantemirovskaya Street, 16 Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University Saint Petersburg – 194100 Russia Mary Smith London University September 15, 2014 London, UK IG324 8MK
Hi, Mary! How time flies! I am a fourth-year student at present already. It is not easy to study medicine. To tell you the truth, it’s very difficult. Medicine is cosmos. The medical curriculum is arduous. Medical students must work very hard. As for me, I am constantly pressed for time. You know, I have wished to be a doctor since my childhood. Do you remember I had a chance to be treated by a very good pediatrician when a child? I think it was his influence as well that I decided to enter the Medical University. And only now being a fourth-year student I begin to understand that Pediatrics is a very particular field of medicine. It deals with ill children, sometimes with very ill children. One must have a God-given talent to be a good pediatrician. By the way, it’s a pity that the social status of medical profession in our country today is not as high as it should be. It’s not well paid, though it’s hard and demanding. That’s why only those who really care for medicine and children become medical students. As for me, I understand that to be a doctor it is necessary to have deep professional knowledge. While studying I master the basic theoretical and practical medicine. And I am going to read medical articles in Russian and English to keep abreast of modern achievements in medicine. You know me well, I am quiet and friendly by nature and I hope I’ll be able to get on with different kinds of people and to manifest a sympathetic and caring attitude to my patients. I believe I’ll be able to establish adequate contacts with children and their parents to gain my patients’ confidence, to reassure their fears. I hope they will trust me and respect. I’m sorry to say that our state medicine today is very poor. There is shortage of practically everything: modern equipment, good instruments, necessary drugs and so on. But our doctors do their best to help their patients. They are true to the Hippocratic Oath. I miss you. I am looking forward to hear from you soon. Yours, Anna.
Ex.5. Read the original and modern texts of the doctors’ oath, compare them and find those sentences which give the information about ethical principles of this profession: THE HIPPOCRATIC OATH I swear by Apollo – the physician, by Asclepius Hygea and Panaces, and I take to witness all the gods, and the goddesses, to keep according to my ability the following Oath. I will prescribe regimen for the good of my patients according to my ability and never do harm to anyone. I will not prescribe a deadly drug, nor give advice which may cause him death. In every house where I come I will enter only for the good of my patients, I will keep myself far from all intentional ill-doings, and especially from the pleasures of love with women or with men, be they free or slaves. All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or outside my profession, which must not be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal. If I keep this oath faithfully, may I enjoy my life and practice my art, respected by all men and in all times, but if I swerve from it or violate it, may the reverse be my lot. THE OATH OF THE RUSSIAN DOCTOR At the time of receiving the honorary title of doctor and going to practice my medical profession, I swear this solemn oath: I will give all my knowledge, strength and abilities to the protection and improvement of people’s health, the treatment and prevention of diseases and work hard to the benefit of society; I will always be ready to give medical aid and deal with every case attentively and carefully and keep a medical secret; I will constantly perfect my knowledge of medicine and medical skill; working hard I will promote the development of medical science and practice; I will seek my colleagues’ advice if necessary in the interests of the patient and never refuse them to give my advice and assistance; I will cherish and develop the noble traditions of the home medicine, I will follow the principles of the modern society and always remember about the honorary calling of the Russian doctor, about all the responsibility to the people and the Russian State. Ex.9. Study the text and supply the best title for the story: A) THE STRANGE DOCTOR or… B) THE MAGIC POWER OF PROFESSIONAL SKILL or… C) Your own variant One summer day a young man with his wife and a three-month old baby were driving to visit their relatives in the country. It was getting dark. They were late and nervous because their baby had been crying all the way. All of a sudden he stopped breathing. He was suffocating. His face and body became cyanotic and convulsions began. The parents were in despair. What should they do? Come back to the town? But how much time would it take? Suddenly the young woman noticed a large neglected house with a sign announcing that a doctor lived there. They hurried to the house and rang the bell. A tall grey-haired man opened the door and said that he was a doctor. There was no one else in the house. They entered a dusty and disordered consulting-room. The doctor had been examining the baby for a long time but with evident skill, then told them that their baby had some intracranial disorder and that the only chance of saving the baby’s life was to operate him at once. The parents hesitated, but they had no choice. “You’ll have to act as an anaesthetist”, - the doctor said to the father, - “as there’s no one else here”. Weak, sick, shocked and half unconscious themselves, the parents obeyed silently. But when the baby had been etherized, the doctor with a knife in his hand advised: “You’d better wait outside. I can get on alone now.” Staying in the darkness and looking into the lighted room, the parents suddenly heard some footsteps and were shocked by the sight of three men, two of them armed and the third carrying a rope. They were approaching slowly. “For God’s sake, wait, please,” – the parents asked them. – “Our baby’s skull has been opened, any delay now may lead to his death.” Whispering, one of the men asked, - “What do you take us for?” – “Thieves”. “No, - the man answered, - “We work at the neighbouring insane asylum. The man operating on your child is mad. He escaped only two hours ago… THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE STORY… Now choose a conclusion to the story under the letter a) or b) and see whether it is correct and why: To save their baby a) the parents let the three men interrupt the operation; b) the parents didn’t let the three men interrupt the operation. a) Suppose, you say they let the three men interrupt the operation to save their baby. Of course, they might have done it because the doctor was mad. There was a little chance that a madman could perform a successful operation. Moreover, this doctor being mad and with a knife in his hand could easily kill their poor baby. But let’s hope he didn’t. Remember his evident skill when he was examining the baby. He might perform that operation out of habit due to his professional skill. But if he were interrupted the baby would certainly die. His skull was opened and any delay meant death to him. In any case there was no choice. b) Suppose, you say they didn’t let the three men interrupt the operation to save their baby. You are to be congratulated on the right choice! The parents knew that only an immediate operation could save their baby and there was a chance that the mad doctor was able to operate out of habit. Your reward is to read the end of the story. And here it comes: The three men agreed to wait until the operation was over. Looking through the window they saw the operation was finished. Having entered the room the three men sprang upon the madman who, fighting, was taken away. The men promised the frightened parents to send a doctor and a nurse… Some days later the baby recovered sufficiently to be taken to the town where he was hospitalized under the observation of a prominent neonatologist. Having examined the baby carefully, this doctor said: “Your baby will get well and he will be perfectly normal again but I can’t understand anything. Only the operation could have saved him and only one man has ever performed such operation successfully. But that doesn’t explain anything because that particular man went mad some years ago and is now in an asylum somewhere in the country.”
