Arkhangelsk is called the Gate to the Arctic. Over two hundred polar research expeditionsguided by V. Chichagov, F. Litke, V. Rusanov, P. Pakhtusov and G. Sedov set their sail from here.

Arkhangelsk is a year-round seaportdue to icebreakers.

During both world wars, Arkhangelsk was a major port of entry for Allied aid. During World War II, the city became known in the West as one of the two main destinations (along with Murmansk) of the Arctic Convoys bringing supplies to assist the Russians who were cut off from their normal supply lines.

Arkhangelsk is an administrative centre of the Arkhangelsk Region.

Arkhangelsk is a large research and industrial centre. Timber, wood-chemical, pulp-and-paper, fish-processing, machine-building, microbiology industrial enterprises are concentrated here.The city ismainlya centre for the timber and fishing industries.

Two hundred educational institutions work in Arkhangelsk today. The largest of them is Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after Lomonosov.

Cultural life in contemporaryArkhangelsk is very rich and diverse. There are three theatres in the city, the Pomor Philharmonic Society with a wonderful organ hall, a huge research library (named after Dobrolyubov) and a lot of museums.

The State Academic Northern Russian Folk Choir, Singing and Dancing Ensemble «Siverko» and Arkhangelsk State Chamber Orchestra are well known in Russia and abroad.

A lot of festivals and sport competitions traditionally take place in Arkhangelsk: the International Cinema Festival «Sozvezdiye», the Television Films Festival «Spolokhi», The Folklore Festival «The Pearl of the North», International Street Theatres Festival and Theatre Festival «European Spring», festivals of jazz and classical music, world championships in bandy and thaekvon-do.

Arkhangelsk is associated with the names of famous people: Mikhail Lomonosov, a great scientist-encyclopaedist; Fedot Shubin, a great sculptor; Aleksandr Borisov, the first painter of the Arctic and polar researcher; scientist-surgeon Nikolai Amosov; surgeon-ophthalmologist Svyatoslav Fedorov; writers Boris Shergin, Stepan Pisahov, Evgeniy Kokovin, Fedor Abramovand many others.
