Bias - showing an opinion about something that is not based on all of the facts. There are 3 types of bias: by omission, by placement and by spin. Bias by omission – leaving one side out of an article, or a series of articles over a period of time. Bias by placement – is the pattern of placing news stories in a way that downplays information supportive of the minority viewpoint. Bias by spin – a form of media bias that clouds a reader’s view, preventing them from getting a precise take on what happened. The way in which a person sees the world based on the persons beliefs and life experiences. Spin- giving a positive or negative point of view about a subject in order to change the opinion of the audiences. Bias by Placement 1. Role of Editors 2. Sensationalism - Top of a page - Beginning of a video - Beginning of a radio broadcast Editor - a person who makes changes to a media message so that it is appropriate for a target audience. Sentationalism - using news media messages to entertain people instead of informing about the everyday life. Bias by Omission - Avoiding Coverage - One-Sided Story Coverage- publishing media messages about an event. One-sided – only one point of view is presented. Objective- being fair and using facts instead of opinion Conflict of interest- a situation where there might be biased coverage due to business or political reasons Bias by spin -Pundits Pundit – a person who has a lot of knowledge and experience about a subject, and gives opinion about the subject in public. -Negative or positive connotations Connotation- the words that we perceive as positive or negative.
