“O Moses, do you intend to kill me, as you killed someone yesterday?

34.

You only want to be a bully in the land,

and do not want to be a peacemaker. ”

35.

20. And a man came from the farthest part of the city running.

36.

He said, “O Moses, the authorities are considering killing you, so leave;

I am giving you good advice. ”

37.

21. So he left, fearful and vigilant.

38.

He said, “My Lord, deliver me from the wrongdoing people. ”

39.

22. As he headed towards Median, he said,                     Midian near Mecca, not Media near Ur

“Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the right way. ”

40.

23. And when he arrived at the waters of Median,

he found there a crowd of people drawing water, and he noticed two women waiting on the side.

41.

He said, “What is the matter with you? ”

42.

They said, “We cannot draw water until the shepherds depart,

and our father is a very old man. ”

43.

24. So he drew water for them, and then withdrew to the shade, and said,

“My Lord God, I am in dire need of whatever good you might send down to me. ”

44.

25. Then, one of the two women approached him, walking bashfully.

45.

She said, “My father is calling you, to reward you for drawing water for us. ”

46.

And when he came to him, and told him the story, he said,

“Do not fear, you have escaped from the wrongdoing people. ”

47.

26. One of the two women said, “Father, hire him;

the best employee for you is the strong and trustworthy. ”

48.

27. He said, “I want to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine,

provided you work for me for eight years.

49.

Yet if you complete ten, that is up to you.

I do not intend to impose any hardship on you.

50.

You will find me, God willing, one of the righteous. ”

51.

28. He said, “Let this be an agreement between you and me.

52.

Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there shall be no reprisal against me;

and God is witness over what we say. ”

53.

29. When Moses had completed the term, and departed with his family,

he noticed a fire by the side of the Mount.

54.

He said to his family, “Stay here, I have glimpsed a fire.

55.

Perhaps I can bring you some information from there,

or an ember from the fire, that you may warm yourselves. ”

Divisions 56-80

 THE NARRATIVE 28: 30 - 28: 42

56.

30. When he reached it, he was called from the right side of the valley,

at the Blessed Spot, from the bush:

57.

“O Moses, it is I, God, the Lord of the Worlds.

58.

31. Throw down your staff. ”

59.

And when he saw it wiggling, as if it were possessed,

he turned his back to flee, and did not look back.

60.

God said “O Moses, come forward,

and do not fear, you are perfectly safe.

61.

32. Put your hand inside your pocket, and it will come out white, without blemish.

62.

And press your arm to your side, against fear.

63.

These are two proofs from your Lord, to Pharaoh and his dignitaries.

64.

They are truly sinful people. ”

65.

33. He said, “My Lord, I have killed one of them,

and I fear they will kill me.

66.

34. And my brother Aaron, he is more eloquent than me,

so send him with me, to help me, and to confirm my words, for I fear they will reject me. ”

67.

35. He said, “We will strengthen your arm with your brother,

and We will give you authority, so they will not touch you.

68.

By virtue of Our signs,

you and those who follow you will be the triumphant. ”

69.

36. Yet when Moses came to them with Our signs, clear and manifest, they said,

70.

“This is nothing yett fabricated magic,

and We never heard of this from our ancestors of old. ”

71.

37. Moses said, “My Lord is well aware of him who brings guidance from Him,

and him who will have the sequel of the abode.

72.

The wrongdoers will not succeed. ”

73.

38. Pharaoh said, “O nobles, I know of no god for you other than me.

74.

So fire-up the bricks for me O Hamaan, and build me a tower,

that I may ascend to the God of Moses, though I think he is a liar. ”

75.

39. He and his troops acted arrogantly in the land, with no justification.

76.

They thought they would not be returned to Us.

77.

40. So We seized him, and his troops, and We threw them into the sea.

78.

Observe, therefore, what was the end of the oppressors.

79.

41. And We made them leaders calling to the Fire.

And on Resurrection Day, they will not be saved.

80.

42. And We pursued them in this world with a curse.

And on Resurrection Day, they will be among the despised.

The Narrative (of Moses)                                                                                  CHAPTER FOUR

Divisions 81-115

 THE NARRATIVE 28: 43 - 28: 56

81.

43. We gave Moses the Scripture after We had annihilated the previous generations;

as an illumination for mankind, and guidance, and mercy, so that they may remember.

82.

44. You were not on the Western Side when We decreed the command to Moses,

nor were you among the witnesses.

83.

45. Yet We established many generations,

and time took its toll on them.

84.

Nor were you among the people of Median, reciting Our revelations to them.

85.

Yet We kept sending messengers.

86.

46. Nor were you by the side of the Mount when We proclaimed _____.

87.

Rather, it was a mercy from your Lord,

that you may warn people who received no warner before you,

so that they may take heed.

88.

47. Otherwise, if a calamity befell them as a result of what their hands have perpetrated,

they would say,

89.

“Our Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger,

we would have followed Your revelations, and been among the believers. ”

90.

48. Yet when the truth came to them from Us, they said,

“If only he was given the like of what was given to Moses. ”

91.

Did they not disbelieve in what was given to Moses in the past?

92.

They said, “Two works of magic backing one another. ”

93.

And they said, “We are disbelieving in both. ”

94.

49. Say to them, “Then bring a scripture from God, more conductive to guidance than both,

and I will follow it, if you are truthful. ”

95.

50. Yet if they fail to respond to you, know that they follow their fancies.

96.

And who is more lost than him who follows his fancy without guidance from God?

97.

God does not guide the unjust people.

98.

51. We have delivered the Word to them, that they may remember.

99.

52. Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it believe in it,

53. When it is recited to them, they say,

100.

“We have believed in it;

101.

it is the truth from our Lord;

we were Muslims prior to it. ”

102.

54. These will be given their reward twice, because they persevered;

and because they counter evil with good;

and from Our provisions to them, they give to the cause of God.

103.

55. And when they hear vain talk, they avoid it, and say,

104.

“We have our deeds, and you have your deeds;

105.

Peace be upon you;

we do not desire the ignorant. ”

107.

56. You cannot (always) guide whom you love,

yet God guides whomsoever He wills,

and He knows best those who are guided.

108.

57. And they say, “If we follow the guidance with you,

we will be snatched from our land. ”

109.

Did We not establish for them a Safe Sanctuary,

to where are brought all kinds of fruits, as provision from Ourselves?

110.

Yet most of them do not know (except a few).

111.

58. And how many a city did We destroy for turning unappreciative of its livelihood?

112.

Here are their homes, uninhabited after them, except for a few.

113.

And We became the Inheritors.

114.

59. Your Lord never destroys cities without first sending a messenger in their midst,

reciting to them Our revelations.

115.

And We never destroy the cities, unless their people are wrongdoers.

The Narrative (of Moses)                                                                                    CHAPTER FIVE

Divisions 116-145

 THE NARRATIVE 28: 60 - 28:

116.

60. Whatever thing you are given is but the material of this world, and its glitter.

Yet what is with God is better, and longer lasting.

117.

Do you [not] comprehend?

118.

61. Can someone to whom We have made a fine promise—that he will attain—

be equal to someone to whom We have given enjoyments in this world,

yet who will be, on Resurrection Day, among the arraigned?

119.

62. On the Day when He will call to them, and say,

“Where are My associates whom you used to claim? ”

120.

63. Those against whom the sentence is justified will say,

“Our Lord, these are they whom we misled.

121.

We misled them, as we were misled.

122.

We beg Your forgiveness;

it was not us they used to worship. ”

123.

64. And it will be said, “Call on your partners. ”

124.

And they will call on them, yet they will not respond to them.

125.

And they will see the suffering.

126.

If only they were guided they could avoid it.

127.

65. On the Day when He will call to them, and say,

“What did you answer the Messengers? ”

128.

66. They will be blinded by the facts on that Day,

and they will not question each other.

129.

67. Yet he who repents, and believes, and does righteous deeds,

may well be among the winners.

130.

68. Your Lord creates whatever He wills, and He chooses.

131.

The choice is not theirs.

132.

Glory be to God, and exalted be He above the associations they make.

133.

69. And your Lord knows what their hearts conceal, and what they reveal.

70. And He is God.

There is no god except He.

134.

To Him belongs all praise in this life, and in the next.

135.

And His is the decision,

and to Him you will be returned.

136.

71. Say to them, “Have you considered?

137.

Had God made the night perpetual over you until the Day of Resurrection,

which god other than God will bring you illumination?

138.

Do you not hear? ”

139.

72. Say, “Have you considered?

140.

Had God made the day perpetual over you until the Day of Resurrection,

that day that god other than God will bring you night to rest in?

141.

Do you not see? ”

142.

73. It is out of His mercy that He made for you the night and the day,

that you may rest in it, and seek some of His bounty;

and that you may give thanks.

143.

74. On the Day when He will call to them, and say,

“Where are My associates whom you used to claim? ”

144.

75. And We will draw out from every community a witness, and say,

“Produce your evidence. ”

145.

Then they will realize that the truth is God’s,

and those they used to invent have forsaken them.

The Narrative (of Moses)                                                                                      CHAPTER SIX

Divisions 146-180

 THE NARRATIVE 28: 76 - 28: 88

146.

76. Quaroon belonged to the clan of Moses, yet Quaroon oppressed them.

147.

We had given him treasures, the keys for that would weigh down a group of strong men. the ark

148.

His people said to him, “Do not exult;

God does not love the exultant.

149.

77. Yet seek, with what God has given you, the Home of the Hereafter,

and do not neglect your share of this world.

150.

And be charitable, as God has been charitable to you.

151.

And do not seek corruption in the land.

152.

God does not like the seekers of corruption. ”

153.

78. He said, “I was given all this on account of knowledge I possess. ”

154.

Did he not know that God destroyed many generations before him,

who were stronger than he, and possessed greater riches?

155.

Yet the guilty will not be asked about their sins.

156.

79. And he went out before his people in his splendor,

those who desired the worldly life said,

157.

“If only we possessed the likes of what Quaroon was given.

158.

He is indeed very fortunate. ”

159.

80. Yet those who were given knowledge said,

“Woe to you!

160.

The reward of God is better for those who believe and do righteous deeds. ”

161.

Yet none attains it except the steadfast.

162.

81. So We caused the earth to cave in on him and his mansion.

163.

He had no company to save him from God,

and he could not defend himself.

164.

82. Those who had wished they were in his position the day before were saying,

165.

“Indeed, it is God who spreads the bounty to whomever He wills of His servants,

and restricts it. (from whomever he wills. )

166.

Had God not been gracious to us, He would have caved in on us.

167.

No wonder the ungrateful never prosper. ”

168.

83. That Home of the Hereafter

—We assign it for those who seek no superiority on earth, nor corruption.

169.

And the outcome is for the cautious.

170.

84. Whoever brings a virtue will receive better than it.

Yet whoever brings evil—

the evildoers will be rewarded only according to what they used to do.

171.

85. He Who ordained the Quran for you will return you Home.

172.

Say to them, “My Lord knows best who it is that comes with guidance,

and who is in manifest error. ”

173.

86. You did not expect the Scripture to be transmitted to you,

except as mercy from your Lord.

174.

Therefore, do not be a supporter of the disbelievers.

175.

87. And do not let them divert you from God’s revelations after they have been revealed to you.

176.

And pray to your Lord, and never be of the polytheists.

177.

88. And do not invoke with God any other god.

There is no god but He.

179.

All things perish, except His presence.

180.

His is the judgment,

and to Him you will be returned.

The Spider                                                                                                            CHAPTER ONE

Divisions 1-25

 THE SPIDER 29: 1 - 29: 15

1.

1. Alif, Lam, Meem. (A, L, M)

2. Have the people supposed that they will be left alone to say, “We believe, ”

without being put to the test?

2.

3. We have tested those before them.

3.

God will surely know who are the truthful,

and He will surely know who are the liars.

4.

4. Or do those who commit sins think they can fool Us?

5.

Terrible is their opinion!

6.

5. Whoever looks forward to the meeting with God—the appointed time of God is coming.

He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

7.

6. Whoever strives, strives only for himself.

8.

God is Independent of the beings.

9.

7. Those who believe and do righteous deeds—We will remit their sins,

and We will reward them according to the best of what they used to do.

10.

8. We have advised the human being to be good to his parents.

11.

Yet if they urge you to associate with Me something you have no knowledge of,

do not obey them.

12.

To Me is your return;

and I will inform you of what you used to do.

13.

9. Those who believe and do good works

—We will admit them into the company of the righteous.

14.

10. Among the people is he who says, “We have believed in God. ”

15.

Yet when he is harmed on God’s account,

he equates the people's persecution with God’s retribution.

16.

And if help comes from your Lord, he says, “We were actually with you. ”

17.

Is not God aware of what is inside the hearts of the people?

18.

11. God certainly knows those who believe,

and He certainly knows which are the hypocrites.

19.

12. Those who disbelieve say to those who believe,

“Follow our way, and we will carry your sins. ”

20.

In no way can they carry any of their sins.

21.

They are liars.

22.

13. They will carry their own loads, and other loads with their own.

23.

And they will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection concerning what they used to fabricate.

24.

14. We sent Noah to his people,

and He stayed among them for a thousand years minus fifty years.

25.

Then the Deluge swept them; for they were wrongdoers.

15. Yet We saved him, together with the company of the Ark,

and We made it a sign for all peoples.

The Spider                                                                                                            CHAPTER TWO

Divisions 26-50

 THE SPIDER 29: 16 - 29: 27

26.

16. And Abraham, when he said to his people,

“Worship God, and fear Him.

27.

That is better for you, if you only knew.

28.

17. You worship idols besides God, and you fabricate falsehoods.

29.

Those you worship, instead of God, cannot provide you with livelihood.

30.

So seek your livelihood from God, and worship Him, and thank Him.

31.

To Him you will be returned. ”

32.

18. If you disbelieve, communities before you have also disbelieved.

33.

The Messenger is only responsible for clear transmission.

34.

19. Have they not seen how God originates the creation, and then reproduces it?

35.

This is easy for God.

36.

20. Say to them, “Roam the earth, and observe how He originated the creation. ”

37.

Then God will bring about the next existence.

38.

God has power over all things. ”

39.

21. He punishes whom He wills, and He grants mercy to whom He wills,

and to Him you will be restored.

40.

22. You cannot escape, on earth or in the heaven;

and you have no protector and no savior besides God.

41.

23. Those who disbelieved in God’s signs and His encounter—these have despaired of My mercy.

42.

For them is a painful torment.

43.

24. Yet the only response from his people was their saying, “Kill him, or burn him. ”

44.

Yet God saved him from the fire.

Surely in that are signs for people who believe.

45.

25. And he said, “You have chosen idols instead of God,

out of affection for one another in the worldly life.

46.

Yet then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will disown one another, and curse one another.

47.

Your destiny is Hell, and you will have no saviors. ”

48.

26. Then Lot believed in him, and said,

“I am emigrating to my Lord.

49.

He is the Noble, the Wise. ”

50.

27. And We granted him Isaac and Jacob,

and conferred on his descendants the Prophethood and the Book,

and gave him his reward in this life;

and in the Hereafter he will be among the upright.

The Spider                                                                                                       CHAPTER THREE

Divisions 51-80

 THE SPIDER 29: 28 - 29: 44

51.

28. And Lot, when he said to his people,

“You are committing an obscenity not perpetrated before you by anyone in the whole world.

52.

29. You approach men, and cut off the way,

and commit lewdness in your gatherings. ”

53.

Yet the only response from his people was to say,

“Bring upon us God’s punishment, if you are truthful. ”

54.

30. He said, “My Lord, help me against the people of corruption. ”

55.

31. And when Our envoys brought Abraham the good news, they said,

“We are going to destroy the people of this town; its people are wrongdoers. ”

56.

32. He said, “Yet Lot is in it. ”

57.

They said, “We are well aware of who is in it.

58.

We will save him, and his family, except for his wife, who will remain behind. ”

59.

33. Then, when Our envoys came to Lot, they were mistreated,

and he was troubled and distressed on their account.

60.

They said, “Do not fear, nor grieve.

61.

We will save you and your family, except for your wife, who will remain behind. ”

62.

34. “We will bring down upon the people of this town a scourge from heaven,

because of their wickedness. ”

63.

35. And We left behind a clear trace of it, for people who understand.

64.

36. And to Median, their brother Shuaib.

65.

He said, “O my people, worship God and anticipate the Last Day,

and do not spread corruption in the land. ”

66.

37. Yet they rejected him, so the tremor overtook them,

and they were left motionless in their homes.

67.

38. And Aad and Thamood.

It has become clear to you from their dwellings.

68.

Satan embellished for them their deeds,

barring them from the path, even though they could see.

69.

39. And Quaroon, and Pharaoh, and Hamaan—Moses went to them with clear arguments,

yet they acted arrogantly in the land.

70.

And they could not get ahead.

40. Each We seized by his sin.

71.

Against some We sent a sandstorm.

Some were struck by the blast.

72.

Some We caused the ground to cave in beneath them.

And some We drowned in floods.

73.

It was not God who wronged them,

yet it was they who wronged their own selves.

74.

41. The likeness of those who take to themselves protectors other than God is that of the spider.

75.

It builds a house.

76.

Yet the most fragile of houses is the spider’s house.

77.

If they only knew.

78.

42. God knows what they invoke besides Him.

He is the Almighty, the Wise.

79.

43. These examples—We put them forward to the people;

yet none grasps them except the learned.

79.

44. God created the heavens and the earth with truth.

80.

Surely in that is a sign for the believers.

81.

45. Recite what is revealed to you of the Scripture, and perform the prayer.

82.

The prayer prevents indecencies and evils.

83.

And the remembrance of God is greater.

And God knows what you do.

84.

46. And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in the best manner possible,

except those who do wrong among them.

85.

And say to them, “We believe in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to you;

86.

and our God and your God is One;

and to Him we are submissive. ”

87.

47. Likewise, We revealed to you the Scripture.

88.

Those to whom We gave the Scripture believe in it, and some of these believe in it.

89.

None renounce Our communications except the disbelievers.

90.

48. You did not read any scripture before this,

nor did you write it down with your right hand;

otherwise the falsifiers would have doubted.

91.

49. In fact, it is clear signs in the hearts of those given knowledge.

92.

No one renounces Our signs except the unjust.

93.

50. And they said, “If only a miracle from his Lord was sent down to him. ”

94.

Say, “Miracles are only with God, and I am only a clear warner. ”

95.

51. Does it not suffice them that We revealed to you the Scripture, which is recited to them?

96.

In that is mercy and a reminder for people who believe.

97.

52. Say, “God suffices as witness between you and me.

98.

He knows everything in the heavens and the Earth.

99.

Those who believe in vanity and reject God—it is they who are the losers. ”

100.

53. And they urge you to hasten the punishment.

101.

Were it not for a specified time, the punishment would have come to them.

102.

Yet it will come upon them suddenly, while they are unaware.

103.

54. They urge you to hasten the punishment.

104.

Yet Hell will engulf the disbelievers.

105.

55. On the Day when the punishment will envelop them,

from above them, and from beneath their feet,

He will say, “Taste what you used to do! ”

106.

56. O My servants who have believed:

My earth is vast, so worship Me alone.

107.

57. Every soul will taste death.

Then to Us you will be returned.

108.

58. Those who believe and work righteousness—We will settle them in Paradise,

in mansions under which rivers flow, dwelling therein forever.
