Also: · hate Croats (they made Serbs land-locked ); · passionate ab politics (when talking w/ them: be firm, but try not to offend them) · they're BOTH Pro-West (think that they're a part of it; a NATO member; ) AND Pro-Russia (love Russians... like most of the Balkans (so does Hungary)).
Bulgaria [Из презентации Любавина Е. (Большое ему спасибо! )] Historical Background · Bulgars – a tribe of Turkic warrior nomads; · 681: 1st Bulgarian Empire; · 886: Christianization; · 1018-1185: Under the Byzantine rule; · 1396-1878: Under the Ottoman rule; · Now – a backward Balkan nation.
Values · Quiet and soberness; · Pragmatic, persistent and stubborn; · Disciplined, steady, thorough, good organizers; · Animosity toward Turks; · Suspicious but tolerant of foreigners; · Highly literate.
Religion · The Eastern Orthodox Church.
Space & Time · Little pushing/shoving; · Punctual; · Patient and slow-moving; · Little sense of urgency; · The difference from other Slavs: some Reactive tendencies (" Working around the pool" ).
Manners & Mannerisms · Extremely hospitable; · Eating, drinking, socializing; · Gallantry.
Communication (in general): · Initial stages: o 1. A stage of reserve and reticence (молчаливость/скрытность), o 2. Sounds out (прощупывает) and sizes up (оценивает) opponents; · No confrontation: o 3. Makes requests in a circuitous (окольный) manner, o 4. Uses charm, o 5. Reaches a pragmatic conclusion.
Communication (in business): 1. No rush, much patience, a slow manner; 2. Makes requests and reacts VERY indirectly, in a circuitous manner; 3. A roundabout approach; 4. A win-win goal.
Do's · Praise their potential. Be open and friendly; · Point out/Praise: o Bulgaria’s resistance to the Turkish domination(incl. preserving its language and religion), o The fact that the Cyrillic alphabet was created by the Bulgarians (later it spread to Russia and other countries), o Bulgarians as very intelligent and educated; · Listen to their complaints about problems and difficulties, but don’t offer advice/solutions. Show your confidence that they can sort things out on their own.
Don'ts · Don’t compare them to the Serbs and the Romanians; · Don’t be enthusiastic about Turkey; · Avoid talking about the Communist times.
