Brest... A lot of words have been said and written about the city, sung by artists and poets of the past and present. The history of the city was imprinted not only in the architecture of the regional center, but also in the special mentality of the indigenous people who survived  despite of enemy raids, wars, multiple changes of power and state system.
A number of events in change of world geopolitics and development of foreign economic activity are connected with Brest region.
For almost thousand years the city has become home to people of different nationalities: the Belarusians, the Russians, the Jews, the Ukrainians and many others. Visitors noted the hospitality and cordiality of  Brest.

For the first mention of the city you need to consider the date 1019 mentioned in Novgorod chronicle. One of the oldest cities in Belarus. Polotsk, Vitebsk and Tours were founded a bit earlier.

The famous ethnographer P. M. Shpilevsky in 1863 wrote down one of the legends about the origin of the first name of the city. It tells the story of a rich merchant who with his comrades went with the goods to Lithuania. The trade caravan made its way through the off-road, through thorny bushes and dense forests. Suddenly

the path was blocked by a swamp quagmire. The wheels of the carts were stuck, the horses could not take a step. Not used merchants to deviate from the target - cut birch, coated black swamp white birch flooring. He crossed the bog on a shaky but strong birch path and stopped to rest at a small river. It flowed into a wider river not far away and formed an island with it, densely overgrown with trees. The merchants thanked their pagan God Beles for the safe passage of the swamp - in his honor they built a temple on the island. The caravan moved again...
After a successful fishing in the Lithuanian lands,  the merchants returned with large profits. Made a halt at Belasova temples, cut down a few huts and decided to stay in these places forever. Not forgotten the difficult road through the swamps - called new Bark town...
It is assumed that the name of the city also comes from the words “birch bark” (birch bark) or " birch bark" (elm species), which grew violently on the site of an anc ient settlement.

The ancient settlement was located on the Cape formed by the right Bank of the Western Bug river and the left sleeve of the Mukhavets river, at the intersection of the most important trade routes passing through the lands of the Eastern Slavs to Europe.
On December 4, 1939 Brest became the regional center of the BSSR. Now the city is the administrative center of Brest region of the Republic of  Belarus. The city celebrates its independence on July 28. On this day in 1944 during the Lublin-Brest operation Brest was liberated by the troops of the 1st Belarusian front from the fascists.
Brest fortress is a symbol  of  Brest.

I’ve never been to London
And never seen the Queen.
But I’ve visited the city
Which is so gorgeous, clean.

I like its atmosphere
That is so warm and mere,
It is so friendly, true
And it’s so pleasant too.

I like to feel its air
With music from the past.
This year’s its great birthday:
One thousand years passed!

The first name was Berestie,
The second- Brest Litovsk.
And now we know as Brest it.
You’ll fell in love with it, I hope.

 Helen Kotova

This town is a great mystery,
It has a spectacular history.
This town has the past that’s full of misery
And the future with numerous energy.

This town has won the war,
And many people died here.
But they had known what they’re dying for
And hadn't known the terrible feeling of fear.

This town will impress you if you stay there,
This town is absolutely treasure, we can say fair,
You'll never forget it even if you lose your memory,
‘cause People of Brest are the biggest world's family!
