RISK CONTROL

Inordertocontroltheriskweneedtoworkoutthebestmethodofhandlingtherisk. Lookatthefollowingmethods, whicharereferredtoasthe ‘hierarchyofcontrols’, toseeifyoucaneliminateorreducetherisk.

· Elimination – byremovingthehazardentirelythroughnewdesignorimplementing a newprocess

· Substitution – byreplacinghazardousmaterialsormethodswithlesshazardousalternatives

· Engineering – byisolating, enclosingorcontainingthehazardorthroughdesignimprovements

· Administrative – byensuringsafeoperatingproceduresareinplace, andthateffectivetraining, inductionandmonitoringisavailabletoallintheworkplace

· Personalprotectiveequipment (PPE) – bymakingsurethatappropriatesafetyequipment, suchasgloves, hats, sunscreenetc. areavailable.

Oftenpeoplepickthe ‘easier’ optionbygoingstraighttoadministrativecontrolsor PPE butthereareoftenmoreeffectivewaystocontrolthehazard. Inmanycasesconsultationanddiscussionwiththepeopleinvolvedrevealsnewideasorbetterwaysofhandlinghazardsandreducingtherisksofinjury. Focusonwhatisbothrealisticandpracticalsothatrisksareminimisedtoanacceptablelevel
