RISK ASSESSMENT – IT’S A MUST

Thesuccessofyoureventismeasuredinmanywaysandsafetyisoneofthem. Aspartofanygoodplanningprocesshazardsshouldbeidentifiedandrisksassessedandcontrolledtominimisethepotentialforinjuryorharm. Eventsvaryinsize, natureandtype, butalleventsrequireassessment, controlandmonitoringofrisks.

Whilemostofusunderstandthis, wecanfinditdifficulttoapplyto a workingeventdocument, suchasRiskRegistersorRiskControlPlans. Remembertostartwithsomethingsimpleandbuildonit. Itwillbecomeaninvaluabletoolthatyoucanusetoassesseventsafety – fromtheplanningphaserightthroughtotheoverallevaluationoftheevent.

HAZARD IDENTIFICATION

Hazardidentificationistheprocessofrecognisinghazardsassociatedwithanevent. Itishelpfultoidentifyrisksbyconsideringthepeopleinvolvedandtheirrolestoensuretheirsafetyatalltimes.

Hazard ‘groupings’ thatcanassistintheidentificationprocessinclude:

· human - typeandsizeofcrowdexpected, levelofcrowdparticipation

· technological - mechanical, utilitiessuchasgasandelectricity

· natural - thephysicallocationandsiteareaconditions

· environmental - weather, EnvironmentProtectionAuthoritycontrolled, groundimpactetc.

RISK ASSESSMENT

Riskassessmentistheprocessofestimatingthepotentialeffectsorharmof a hazardtodetermineitsriskrating. Bydeterminingthelevelofrisk, eventorganiserscanprioritiseriskstoensuresystematiceliminationorminimisation.

Inordertodetermine a riskratingconsider:

· theconsequence - whatwillhappen, theextentofharm; and

· thelikelihood - chancesorpossibilityofitoccurring.
