A TEENAGERS’ HOBBY?

MOBILE PHONES!

Activity 1

Song: Telephone, by James Blunt

This living song by James Blunt is narrated by a telephone, which describes the relationship his/her owner has with it as a love relationship. I think this song shows the relationship most of our students have with their mobile phones.

Aim

Apart from improving students’ language skills this activity aims at making them aware of the dependent they are on the telephone. They should be able to see that to be dependent on something is not healthy and it makes us weaker.

Procedure

· Listen to the song and do a fill-in exercise.

· Read the song aloud to check they understant the general meaning of the lyrics.

· Work vocabulary in the lyrics related to:

- Body: chest, hand, mouth, anatomy, shoulder...

- Phones: to charge it up, to turn it on, to  keep  it on, to vibrate, to bust...

- Words related to feelings: jealous, inseparable, crazy, to freak out...

- Expressions about relationships: to be in love, to rely on, to break up, to keep secrets

· Answer a list of questions related to the use they make of their telephone.

· Share the answers with the teacher and the rest of the group aloud.

· Debate: think about the prons and cons of overusing telephones. Write ideas on the board. Finally, with such ideas they can write an essay as homework at home.

Personal questions for the students to answer: 1. Have you ever freaked out because your mobile phone didn’t work? 2. Do you use your phone 24/7 365 days? 3. Have you ever experience jealousy because of the mobile phone? 4. How often do you charge your phone on during a week? 5. Have the use of the mobile phone ever caused you any problems? Which ones? 6. Do you check your phone at midnight to read messages or texting? 7. What’s the longest time you haven’t used the phone? 8. If you had to live in a desert island but you just had to choose between having your mobile phone or a relative, what would you choose?

Song: Telephone, by James Blunt

Next to your chest like a locket
Or on vibrate in your pocket
You've got it in your hand everywhere you go
Or close to your mouth when your voice is low
You freak out if I ever get busted
Buy another me no matter what the cost is
We're inseparable, disconnectable
Without me you never go too far

(Chorus) I just wanna be your telephone
Keep me on 24/7 365 days
Think about all the time we could waste
I just wanna be your telephone
Never let me go
I know every dirty secret that you keep
Crazy as shit that no one sees

Never would have to be jealous
When you're talking to all of those fellas
Cause I'm the only one that's ever gonna be
So well acquainted with your anatomy
Like a shoulder to cry on
I'm the one thing you rely on
It's like a drug
I'm so in love
Never let anyone break us up

(Chorus) I just wanna be your telephone
Keep me on 24/7 365 days
Think about all the time we could waste
I just wanna be your telephone
Never let me go
I know every dirty secret that you keep
Crazy as shit that no one sees

So here comes the come-up,
Guess I better sum up
I'll never be what you need
Cause you love that toy
More than this boy

Charge me up, turn me on
I love it when you use me
All night long

Charge me up, turn me on
I love it when you use me
All night long (x3)

(Chorus)
