A wide variety of accommodation is available to the modern tourist. You can be housed in guest house (гостевой дом) ( «B& B» break and breakfast)  or tourist home (with 1 or 2 rooms to grand luxury hotels with hundreds of rooms. ) A feature of Europe is the pension, a small establishment with perhaps 10 to 20 guest rooms. Originally, pensions offered not only lodging (проживание) but also full board, all of the day's meals for the guest. Nowadays, how­ever, most of them offer only a bed, usually at an inexpensive rate, and a " continental breakfast" (французский мб) (отсутствие горячих блюд) of coffee and rolls. You can also stay at inns (постоялый двор). As Europe has a rich historical and cultural heritage, you can leave even in a castle, because many old buildings have been converted into small hotels. If you travel alone, you’ll need a single room. A double room is meant for a couple, there’s one double bed. If you travel with your friend, child or other member of your family, you will leave in a twin room, which means two single beds. Hotels also normally provide room service: food and drink are delivered to the guest's room by a waiter from restaurant. In addition, catering service is usually provided in the hotel's recreational areas (the poolside bar and snack bar, for quick food).

 

FACILITIES

Large, modern hotels contain not only guest rooms, but many other facilities as well. They usually contain restaurants and cocktail lounges, shops, and recreational facilities such as swimming pools or health clubs.

As for your room, you will be provided with such " in-room amenities" as a TV, mini-bar, small refrigerator, hairdryer, an ironing press, complimentary slippers, conditioner etc. International hotels also contain facilities for business people: meeting rooms of different sizes, international phones, laptops, computers, faxes, printers, xerox etc. Many hotels also have facilities for social functions, conventions, and conferences: ballrooms, auditoriums, exhibit areas, and so forth. You can use fitness facilities as well: gym, spa, health room and swimming pool.

 

SERVICES

Hotels offer different services such as room services, cleaning, laundry, wake-up call, medical services (big hotels do provide), transfer services, excursion service, courier services, currency exchange services, maintenance services (тех. обслуживание) and car rental services.
If you’re a businessman, you can use secretarial services and interpreters services. Japanese-speaking staff and Arabic-speaking staff are usually required. If you travel by car, you can use underground or indoor parking

 

STAFF:

The amount of the staff engaged in hotel activity largely depends on the status of the hotel. According to the recommendations of the World Tourist Organization, the optimum number of staff per 10 rooms in three star hotel – 8 person, in four star hotel – 12 person, in 5 star hotel – 20 person.

 

The front desk clerk, often known as the receptionist, takes bookings, checks guests in and out of the hotel, bills them and provides general information. For this role you must be polite, organised and have good language skills.

The porter, also called bellboy, or bellhop in the US, shows you to your room and carries your luggage for you. They may also move and set up equipment for meetings and conferences, take messages and run errands.

The hotel housekeeper manages the cleaning staff, supervises their work, draws up their rotas and deals with linen (постел. белье), toiletry and cleaning supplies. They need to be organised, pay attention to detail and have good budgetary skills.

Hotel room attendants, more traditionally known as chambermaids, make sure hotel rooms are clean, tidy and inviting for guests. They change bed linen and towels, make the beds, vacuum floors, dust and polish furniture, clean bathrooms,

replace toiletries and restock the mini-bar. This role is physically demanding and can often be seasonal or part-time.

The word concierge is French for caretaker, but in a hotel they help guests with problems, give them information and assist them with bookings, especially for transportation and sightseeing. A concierge should have good local knowledge and excellent communication skills.

Hotel managers oversee all aspects of running a hotel, from housekeeping and general maintenance to budget management and marketing. On a daily basis they manage staff, deal with customer complaints, organise building maintenance and liaise with all the different hotel departments. They need good business

and management skills, must be organised and diplomatic, have excellent communication skills and hold hospitality management qualifications.

 

Other roles are: room service delivery; courtesy drivers or chauffeurs; pool attendants or lifeguards; maintenance, accounting and security staff.
