Please choose and answer ONLY TWO of the following five questions in an essay format. If you answer more than two questions the instructors will not read them. Each answer should be between 1-2 pagesin length (Times New Roman, Font 12, 2. 0 spacing). Answer all parts of the chosen question. If your answer is longer than 2 pages, the instructors will stop reading it after page 2. Each question is worth 25 points.

B1. Define and discuss the three methods of authoritarian control. Do autocrats prefer cooptation, repression, or legitimation for political survival? Why? In your opinion, which strategy is more successful? Give at least one country example. (25 points)

B2. What is the difference between structural and triggering causes of coups? Discuss one structural and one triggering cause for military coups. How do they affect coup likelihood? Which one do you think is more important? (25 points)

B3. From the types of authoritarian regimes (dictatorships) that we discussed during the lecture, which regime is the most likely candidate for democratization? Which one is the least likely candidate? Why? Discuss and explain with at least two country examples. (25 points)

B4. Why are countries that are heavily dependent on natural resources less likely to be democratic? Explain two of the causal mechanisms in the literature about the resource curse. Give at least one country example. (25 points)
