TEXT 25

“Although I am in the renounced order of life and Dā modara is a brahmacā rī, he still keeps a stick in his hand just to educate Me.

Anubh.:  A sannyā sī is brahmacā rī ’s guru; therefore it is improper for a brahmacā rī to instruct a sannyā sī .

Purp. (to text 27): A brahmacā rī is supposed to assist a sannyā sī; therefore a brahmacā rī should not try to instruct a sannyā sī. That is the etiquette. Consequently Dā modara should not have advised Caitanya Mahā prabhu of His duty.

TEXT 45

ā jñ ā deha, avaś ya ā mi dakṣ iṇ e caliba

tomā ra ā jñ ā te sukhe leuṭ i’ ā siba’

… leuṭ i’—returning; ā siba—I shall come.

“Please permit Me to go, for I must tour South India. With your permission, I shall soon return very happily. ”

Anubh.: A West-Indian (Hindi) word leuṭ means returning.

TEXT 59

While the Lord was going along the path to Ā lā lanā tha, which was located on the seashore, Sā rvabhauma Bhaṭ ṭ ā cā rya gave the following orders to Gopī nā tha Ā cā rya.

A. -pr. -bh.:  If one goes six krosas[some 12 miles] to the south from Puri along the seashore, there is the township called Alalanatha. There resides the four-handed Deity of Vasudeva named Alalanatha. His temple is in a small village in the forest; He is offered there an excellent paramanna[a sweet-rice poridge]. Even today the local pandas are showing how the Deity is stained with the warm paramanna. (! )

TEXT 62

‘rā mā nanda rā ya’ ā che godā varī -tī re

adhikā rī hayena teṅ ho vidyā nagare

… adhikā rī —a responsible officer;

“In the town of Vidyā nagara, on the bank of the Godā varī, there is a responsible government officer named Rā mā nanda Rā ya.

A. -pr. -bh.: adhikā rī rajar prodhan karmacari = the chief officer of the king

TEXT 66

“I could not realize when I first spoke with Rā mā nanda Rā ya that his topics and endeavors were all transcendentally uncommon. I made fun of him simply because he was a Vaiṣ ṇ ava. ”

Purp.: Anyone who is a not a Vaiṣ ṇ ava, or an unalloyed devotee of the Supreme Lord, must be a materialist. A Vaiṣ ṇ ava living according to Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu’s injunctions is certainly not on the materialistic platform. Caitanya means “spiritual force. ” All of Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu’s activities were carried out on the platform of spiritual understanding; therefore only those who are on the spiritual platform are able to understand the activities of Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu. Materialistic persons who cannot understand these activities and are generally known as karmī s or jñ ā nī s. The jñ ā nī s are mental speculators who simply try to understand what is spirit and what is matter. Their process is neti neti: “This is not spirit, this is not Brahman. ” The jñ ā nī s are a little more advanced than the dull-headed karmī s, who are simply interested in sense gratification. Before becoming a Vaiṣ ṇ ava, Sā rvabhauma Bhaṭ ṭ ā cā rya was a mental speculator (jñ ā nī ), and being such, he always cut jokes with Vaiṣ ṇ avas. A Vaiṣ ṇ ava never agrees with the speculative system of the jñ ā nī s. Both the jñ ā nī s and karmī s depend on direct sense perception for their imperfect knowledge. The karmī s never agree to accept anything not directly perceived, and the jñ ā nī s put forth only hypotheses. However, the Vaiṣ ṇ avas, the unalloyed devotees of the Lord, do not follow the process of acquiring knowledge by direct sense perception or mental speculation. Because they are servants of the Supreme Lord, devotees receive knowledge directly from the Supreme Personality of Godhead as He speaks it in the Bhagavad-gī tā, or sometimes as He imparts it from within asthe caittya-guru. As Lord Kṛ ṣ ṇ a states in the Bhagavad-gī tā (10. 10): … “To those who are constantly devoted to serving and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me. ” …

Anubh.: caitanya-vimukh prakrti-vadi jnani o karmi-gon caitanyasrito vaisnavke ei-rup vidrup koriya thaken. purbokto dol – pratyaksanumana-sarvasva aksaja-jnan-motto tarka-ponthi, sesokto vyakti sabda-proman-sombol adhoksaja-sevok o srauta-ponthi.

[ = In this way the materialistic jnanis and karmis who are averse to Lord Caitanya (or spiritual force) ridicule a Vaisnava. The formerly mentioned groups are followers of the path of arguments who are fascinated by the aksaja-jnana, or knowledge gathered by the material senses, and whose all in all are the evidences of pratyaksa and anumana; the latter person is a follower of the path of hearing who serves Lord Adhoksaja (the one who is transcendental to the material senses) and whose resource is evidence of sabda. ]

TEXT 69

Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu asked the Bhaṭ ṭ ā cā rya to bless Him while he engaged in the devotional service of Lord Kṛ ṣ ṇ a at home, so that by Sā rvabhauma’s mercy the Lord could return to Jagannā tha Purī.

Purp.: … Although apparently a gṛ hastha (householder), Sā rvabhauma Bhaṭ ṭ ā cā rya was unlike the so-called karmī s interested in sense gratification. … In his book Ś araṇ ā gati, Bhaktivinoda Ṭ hā kura states, ye-dina gṛ he, bhajana dekhi’, gṛ hete goloka bhā ya (Ś araṇ ā gati 31. 6). … The conclusion is that one who acts strictly in the line of Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu is competent to offer blessings to sannyā sī s, even though he be a gṛ hastha householder. Although he is in an exalted position, a sannyā sī still must elevate himself to the transcendental platform by rendering service to the Lord. By His actual behavior, Caitanya Mahā prabhu begged the blessings of Sā rvabhauma Bhaṭ ṭ ā cā rya. In this way He set the example of how one should expect blessings from a Vaiṣ ṇ ava regardless of his social position.

Anubh.: Although in the external vision a servant of Krsna decorates the grhastha-asrama, actually he is not the same as ordinary godasas or grhamedhis; ye-dina gṛ he, bhajana dekhi’, gṛ hete goloka bhā ya (Ś araṇ ā gati by Thakura Bhaktivinoda) – to perform such a kirtana by body, mind and words is the only qualification of a Vaisnava grhastha; thus to instruct foolish living entities about the glories of krsna-bhajana, that one who is actually a pure grhastha Vaisnava surrendered at Sri Caitanya’s lotus feet is a worshipable spiritual master even for a sannyasi, the Lord exhibited begging for the blessings of Sarvabhauma.

TEXT 73

vajrā d api kaṭ horā ṇ i mṛ dū ni kusumā d api

lokottarā ṇ ā ṁ cetā ṁ si ko nu vijñ ā tum ī ś varaḥ

“The hearts of those above common behavior are sometimes harder than a thunderbolt and sometimes softer than a flower. How can one accommodate such contradictions in great personalities? ”

Purp. (to text 72): … The following quotation from Uttara-rā ma-carita (2. 7) explains this behavior…

– the verse is introduced as a composition of Bhavabhū ti.

TEXT 81

Everyone—including children, old men and women—began to dance and to chant the holy names of Ś rī Kṛ ṣ ṇ a and Gopā la. In this way they all floated in the ocean of love of Godhead.

Anubh.: see Adi 7. 25 [The flood of love of Godhead swelled in all directions, and thus young men, old men, women and children were all immersed in that inundation. ]

TEXT 92

Although they all fell to the ground unconscious, the Lord did not turn to see them but proceeded onward.

Anubh.: see Anubh. [rendered as Purp. ] to Madhya 3. 212.

TEXT 108

ei-mata kailā yā vat gelā setubandhe

sarva-deś a ‘vaiṣ ṇ ava’ haila prabhura sambandhe

… setubandhe—to the southernmost part of India;

In this way the Lord went to the extreme southern part of India, and He converted all the provinces to Vaiṣ ṇ avism.

A. -pr. -bh.: Setubandha is situated at the southernmost part of the Bharata-varsa, where there is Ramesvara but on the other bank of the great river Rama, at the shore of the ocean.

TEXT 111

If one does not believe in the uncommon, transcendental pastimes of the Lord, he is vanquished both in this world and in the next.

Anubh.: The uncommon pastimes of Sri Krsna Caitanya are projjhita-kaitava [rejecting all material motivations], nirasta-kuhaka [free from illusion] and aprakrto cid-aisvarya-mayi [transcendental and full of spiritual opulences] – they bestow the eternal highest welfare to the living entity, and therefore they are the actual substance; there is no pretension leading to violence involved in them, which arises from the conditioned ideas of the cheating and cheated living entities bound by maya. Due to this pretension or illusion, both the cheater and the cheated are distracted from service to Krsna, and as a result of that everything becomes destroyed. (! )

TEXT 113

When Lord Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu came to the holy place known as Kū rma-kṣ etra, He saw the Deity and offered prayers and obeisances.

Purp.: … In the temple there are some inscriptions said to be written by Ś rī Narahari Tī rtha, who was in the disciplic succession of Madhvā cā rya. Ś rī la Bhaktisiddhā nta Sarasvatī Ṭ hā kura explains those inscriptions as follows: … (3) He initiated Ā nanda Tī rtha and converted many foolish men to accept sannyā sa and punished them with his rod. … (9) He died in the Ś aka Era 1203, in the month of Vaiś ā kha, in the fortnight of the moon’s waxing period, on the day of Ekā daś ī, after the temple was constructed and dedicated to the holy name of Yogā nanda Nṛ siṁ hadeva. The tablet is dated 1281 A. D., 29 March, Saturday. (? )

Adjustments to CC Madhya 7. 113 (from Dravida Prabhu)

Should be:

(3) He initiated Ā nanda Tī rtha [Madhvā cā rya], who, after accepting sannyā sa, punished many foolish men with his rod and converted them.

(9) In Ś aka Era 1203, in the month of Vaiś ā kha, in the fortnight of the moon’s waxing period, on the day of Ekā daś ī, Narahari Tī rtha dedicated to the holy name of Yogā nanda Nrsimhadeva the temple he had constructed on His order. [The tablet is dated that very day, corresponding to Saturday, March 29, 1281 A. D. ]

Anubh.: … (3) Ā nanda Tī rtha received samskara from him. By the sannyā sa-danda he accepted he brought to the proper path the cattle who went astray from the path of Vyasa. … (9) In Ś aka Era 1203, in the month of Vaiś ā kha, in the fortnight of the

moon’s waxing period, on the auspicious day of Ekā daś ī, Wednesday (? ), after the temple had been constructed, it was blissfully dedicated, in front of Kamatadeva (? ), to Yogā nanda Nrsimhadeva, the giver of an unlimited benefit. It corresponds (professor Kilharn (? ) says) to Saturday (? ), March 29, 1281 A. D.

TEXT 152

One who hears these pastimes of Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu with great faith will surely very soon attain the lotus feet of Lord Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu.

Purp.: When a person actually revives his consciousness with thoughts of Kṛ ṣ ṇ a by the mercy of Ś rī Caitanya Mahā prabhu, he revives his spiritual life and becomes addicted to the service of the Lord. Only then can he act as an ā cā rya...

Anubh.: Thus the glories of Sri Gaurasundara’s incarnation were exhibited through expanding the Acyuta-gotra, or spreading the process of hearing in this way. These are the pastimes referred to in this verse.
