SCOTLAND

 

                           

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. People who live in Scotland are the Scots. Their language is Scottish.
 

 

The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. It is a big, old city with great history and traditions. Every year a lot of tourists come to Edinburgh. They visit Edinburgh Castle, the Cannongate and watch the military tattoo which takes place every August and September.

Glasgow is the largest and busiest city of Scotland. It’s the heart of industry. It’s a center of business and trade. It’s very dirty and ugly in some parts and very beautiful in others. There is a port and a lot of busy streets in Glasgow.

 

The Scottish Highlands are famous for a large, deep freshwater lake Loch Ness. It is best known for the legendary Loch Ness Monster, also known as " Nessie".

 

 

 · Scotland’s official languages are English, Gaelic, Scots

· The currency of Scotland is the pound sterling (GBP)

· Scotland’s government is a constitutional monarchy

· The Queen (of the UK) is Queen Elizabeth II

· The Prime Minister (of the UK) is Theresa May,
the representative of a Conservative Party,

The Scotts are proud of their famous persons:

 Perhaps, the  best known figure in Scottish literature internationally is Robert Burns

 (1759-1796), national  Bard, whose work is celebrated worldwide with Burns Suppers

on 25 January each year. Robert Burns is a pioneer of the Romantic movement in poetry, Burns' work includes 'A Red, Red Rose', 'Tam O'Shanter',  Auld Lang Syne' which is sung as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Day around the world.

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), is the creator of the modern historical novel. He was the first British novelist who created a new type of romantic novels in history. His novels, ballads, poems and other writings have been translated into almost every language and the world's largest monument to an author sits in Edinburgh, in memory of this Scottish author's life and work.
