In 2001 an initiative was started by the Swiss corporation new 7 wonders foundation to choose the new7 wonders of the world from a selection of 200 existing monuments. Here are the officials seven wonders. 7. Great Wall of China - 7th century BC - Chin a. Considered one of the new seven wonders of the world the Great Wall of China was constructed 7th century BC. The Great Wall of China had a workforce of up to a million people. They linked previously existing walls from smaller kingdoms and built new sections in order to keep out northern invaders by sheer magnitude of the ancient fortification. The majority of the existing wall was built during the Ming Dynasty 1368-1644AD. The most comprehensive Archaeological Survey has recently concluded that the entire Great Wall with all of its branches stretches for 8850 1. 8 kilometers or 5, 500 miles. 6. Petra-100 BC - Jordan. Petra the fabled rose red city half as old as time was the ancient capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. It is without a doubt Jordan's most valuable treasure and the greatest tourist attraction. The most elaborate building in Petra is Alkhazneh or the Treasury carved out of a sandstone rock face. Its massive facade wharfing everything around it. It's even more magical visited in the late evening guided by candlelight and enveloped by the sounds of Bedouin pipe music gently floating on the breeze. 5. Christ the Redeemer - opened October 12 1931 - Brazil. It is the largest Art Deco statue in the world and the fifth largest statue of Jesus in the world. A symbol of Christianity across the world the statue has also become a cultural icon of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. And is listed as one of the new seven wonders of the world. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone and was constructed between 1922 and 1931. 4. Machupicchu- 1450 AD- Peru. Chiche n was found by the Mayan civilization in 400 AD and it is located in the north central north of Yucatan Peninsula now called Mexico. It is said to have been the main regional point for different ceremonies the main belief is that people were thrown from the top as a sacrifice to make their God happy and the ones who could survive for the ones who were believed to be seers 2. The Colosseum completed- 80AD - Italy the Colosseum is the largest and most famous amphitheater ever built in the Roman Empire. Its construction was started by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty in 72AD. And was finished by his son Titus in 80 AD. During the Colosseum's opening ceremonies spectacles were held for a hundred days in which five thousand animals in 2000 gladiators were killed. The Coliseum was capable of holding some 50, 000 spectators who could enter the building through no less than 80 entrances. 1. Taj Mahal - completed 1648 AD- India. The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and 20, 000 workers to honor the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. The perfectly symmetrical edifice is set amidst landscaped gardens on the banks of the Yamuna River is marble exterior reflects rose and golden tents at sunrise and sunset while it is dazzling white during the day. It is one of the world's most celebrated structures and a symbol of India's rich history all for one man's love of his wife.
