Guided practice. Less guided practice. Independent practiceGuided practice Students are given the task to complete the sentences containing the new idioms. There are as many sentences as students in the group. The students do the exercise in writing and orally one by one, and the teacher has a chance to correct possible mistakes. The example of such sentences: 1) Jack and Jill worked very hard but they couldn’t make ends … (the correct answer is meet). 2) It is always cheaper to buy food … (the correct answer is in bulk). 3) Mary never cares about money. In fact, she lives in the lap … (the correct answer is of luxury). 4) He can afford anything he likes. He is … in money (the correct answer is rolling). Less guided practice Pair work. Partners ask each other if he / she has ever lived on a shoestring / rolled in money/ had to penny-pinch (all new idioms must be mentioned in their dialogue) and if the answer is “yes” they ask each other why such a situation happened and if he / she felt happy or miserable about it. The teacher goes along the classroom watching and helping when needed.
Independent practice Each student reads a text about a person telling about his / her money problems and how they are solved in his family. The task is to tell the class about this person’s problem using the new idioms and explaining how his character feels about the situation. Teacher talk: Now that you have heard me talking about money in my family and you have practiced the new idioms talking to each other, it’s time for a more independent practice. You will read about one person speaking about money in his / her family. Each of you will have a different character. They are an aristocrat, a divorced mother, a tax man, and a very mean man. By the way, who do you think is the most well off? Who is underprivileged? Ok, we’ll learn very soon if you are right. Your task is to read the information about your character and to prepare a speech about this person’s money matters using the new idioms and stating how this person feels about this situation and how he got into it. I’m sure, some facts will be unexpected and fun. You have 10 minutes to do this task. You are welcome to ask me questions while you are getting ready.
