CHAPTER 8

Exercise 1. Copy out the sentences in which the word combinations are used. Learn these word combinations and give an oral reproduction of the situation in the text in which each word combination is used. Translate the word combinations.

 

1) to stand on tiptoe;

2) to manage to do smth;

3) to get on the wrong side of;

4) to drone on;

5) staff room;

6) to take a roll-call;

7) to turn out to be;

8) to give a talking-to;

9) to mess around;

10) to have a head start;

11) to be in low spirits;

12) on purpose;

13) patchwork quilt.

 

Exercise 2. Paraphrase the underlined words and expressions using their synonyms from the chapter under discussion.

1. There was so much to learn that even people like Ron didn’t have much advantage.

2. Fang put his head on Harry knee and drooled over his robes.

3. Yet Harry couldn’t help thinking that Hagrid didn’t tell the truth  when he said that.

4. Harry wondered if Hagrid had changed the subject deliberately.

5. As Harry and Ron walked back to the castle for dinner, their pockets were full of  rock cakes they’d been too polite to refuse.

 

Exercise 3. Answer the following questions.

1) What were the main subjects taught in the first year?

2) Why didn’t Professor Snape like Harry Potter?

3) What was Hagrid’s hut like?

4) What news did Harry read in the Daily Prophet?
