Listening Scripts

Part 1:

Harry: Can I help you?

Lillian: Yes, thank you. I’m visiting Amsterdam for only one day and I want to see the city.

Harry: Well, Miss …?

Lillian: I’m Lillian.

Harry: Hi, Lillian. And welcome to the Floating Dutchman! My name’s Harry and I’m the driver.

Lillian: It’s nice to meet you, Harry. Tell me, what’s special about the Floating Dutchman?

Harry: The Floating Dutchman is an amphibious bus.

Lillian: An amphibious bus?

Harry: It’s a new attraction in Amsterdam. It looks like a bus, but it travels on water, too. First, we go on the streets of Amsterdam. Then, we go into the River Amstel.

Lillian: Into the River Amstel? That sounds exciting. How long is the trip?

Harry: It’s about 45 minutes.

Lillian: Just 45 minutes?

Harry: That’s right. We’re leaving now, so climb on.

Lillian: OK!

Part 2:

Harry: Good morning, everyone. I’m Harry – driver and guide.

Lillian: Look! There are hundreds of bikes in the streets!

Harry: Many people ride bikes in Amsterdam because there aren’t any mountains or hills. OK, we’re coming to the River Amstel now. Are you ready? We’re going into the river!

Lillian: Ooh! We’re travelling on the river now!

Harry: Look at all the houseboats on the river. About 2, 400 families live on houseboats. Some of the boats are over a hundred years old.

Lillian: Wow, 2, 400 families! Why do people live on the river?

Harry: Many people want to be in the centre of the city.

Lillian: Oh, I see. Well, I hope they’ve all got warm coats. It’s cold on the river! I’m glad I’ve got a jacket and gloves.

Harry: Yes, it is cold today.

Lillian: But I’m happy to be here, Harry. The Floating Dutchman is fantastic!
