PUNCTUATION REVIEW1. The distinction between two settings, the savage reservation and the new world, challenges the notion that savage is bad. a. Correct use of interrupter comma-you can remove the information between commas and the sentence still maintains the same meaning. 2. For example, Bernard’s trip to the savage reservation. a. Sentence fragment because there is not a verb in the sentence. 3. While Lenina appreciates her relationship with John the Savage, John struggles, because he does not share the same feelings regarding physical contact. a. Incorrect use of coordinator comma. Because is not a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS word). 4. Bernard felt stronger when the DHC challenged him. “The Director’s threats had actually elated him. ” (104). a. Incorrect punctuation with citation. The period only goes after the citation, not before the quotation marks. b. Lack of a quote integration. Do not start sentences with quotes; instead, start the sentence with meaningful information to add context to the quote. c. Incorrect verb tense. Writing about literature must always be in present tense.
Quote integration options… · Huxley writes, “While the child was asleep, a broadcast programme from London suddenly started to come through” (24). · In a sudden display of emotion, Bernard “poured out the tale of his miseries and accepted consolation” (180). · After bringing John to the new world, Bernard felt a new sense of power: “Bernard now found himself, for the first time in his life, treated not merely normally, but as a person of outstanding importance” (156). 5. Linda struggles to understand her present life: she wants to live without judgment, to maintain a higher social status, and to avoid the hangover accompanying mescal. a. Correct use of parallel structure. All elements in the list are consistent (include “to” followed by a verb). 6. Once John starts to understand the expectations of the new world, Mond, and John have a discussion about ‘freedom. ’ a. Incorrect use of linker comma. There are only two elements in the list. b. Single marks are used as apostrophes or to show material that was quoted inside of quote. Quotation marks show material that was taken from the work. There is not a punctuation translation of what we would put air quotes around in conversation. 7. Linda survives on the only thing she knows: attention from men. a. Correct use of a colon. It introduces information that is needed for the sentence to be complete and doesn’t follow a verb. 8. Internal conflict drives the characters in the novel, Bernard feels deep struggles, as he does not fit into the society and desperately seeks the approval from others. a. Comma splice. The first comma is used where a stronger form of punctuation must be used. Replace comma splices with periods or semicolons. 9. The society seeks to provide happiness, and uses soma in order to make that happen. a. Incorrect use of a coordinator comma. Coordinator commas must separate two complete sentences (independent clauses), and the subject is missing in the second half of the sentence. 10. Although, Bernard and john form a symbiotic relationship, as Bernard needs john in order to gain the status that he so desperately seeks. a. Incorrect use of the word “Although. ” Although is a subordinating conjunction (same as because) and connects a dependent clause to an independent clause. Translation-you need to add the dependent clause to the word “Although” in order to form a complete thought. i. Example-Although Bernard and John form a symbiotic relationship, Bernard relies on John far more than John relies on Bernard. b. Incorrect capitalization. Please capitalize names.
