Last year, my husband and I were walking through one of the open markets of Mumbai, doing some shopping, buying nice things to take home and enjoying seeing things we had never seen before. As it was a hot day and we were both getting tired, we stopped at one of the squares to have something to eat and have a rest. After resting for nearly an hour, we continued exploring the open market and noticed a snake charmer with two large baskets sat near a bus top. As we both had never seen a real snake before, we went to have a look. As soon as the snake charmer saw us walking towards him, he picked up a beautiful decorated golden ‘Pungi’, a native wind instrument, and opened one of the baskets. When he began to play an Indian tune, we got our first sight of one of the snakes. It slowly rose out of the basket and began to sway to the movements of the Pungi. Both of us were very surprised when the snake charmer’s mobile suddenly began to ring a popular modern British song. The snake continued to dance slowly, regardless of the change in tune. It was evident the snake could not tell the difference between Indian music and a modern song!
