Bellyfeel. Catechism. Discountenanced. Dissemble. Doublethink

of 20

Bellyfeel

Definition: A blind acceptance of an idea or concept with an implication of enthusiasm for the concept despite a lack of knowledge about it; unbellyfeel is its antonym.

Example:Consider, for example, such a typical sentence from a ‘Times’ leading article as OLDTHINKERS UNBELLYFEEL INGSOC. The shortest rendering that one could make of this in Oldspeak would be: ‘Those whose ideas were formed before the Revolution cannot have a full emotional understanding of the principles of English Socialism.’ But this is not an adequate translation.

of 20

Catechism

Definition: A simplified guide to the rules and procedures of a religion, often memorized.

Example:He began asking his questions in a low, expressionless voice, as though this were a routine, a sort of catechism, most of whose answers were known to him already.

of 20

Discountenanced

Definition: Made embarrassing or frowned-upon.

Example:‛Mrs’ was a word somewhat discountenanced by the Party—you were supposed to call everyone ‘comrade’—but with some women one used it instinctively.

of 20

Dissemble

Definition: To lie via affecting a false appearance or behavior.

Example:To dissembleyour feelings, to control your face, to do what everyone else was doing, was an instinctive reaction.

of 20

Doublethink

Definition: To hold two contradictory concepts in your mind simultaneously.

Example:And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. ‘Reality control’, they called it: in Newspeak, ‘doublethink.’
