Growing old in England

Someone asked the other day, ‘What was your favourite fast food when you were growing up?’ ‘We ___NOT/HAVE___ fast food when I was growing up,’ I informed him. ‘All the food was slow.’

‘Come on, you are not serious. Where did you eat?’ ‘In my childhood, it ___CALL___ “at home,”’ I explained. ‘Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we ___SIT___ down together at the dining room table, and if I didn’t like what she had put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.’

Grey hair

Johnny noticed a change in his mother’s appearance. “Mommy, some of your hairs ___TURN___ grey. Why?” the curious child asked.

The mother tried to use this occasion to teach her child: “It is because of you, dear. Every bad action of ___YOU___ shows on my hair.

It ___TURN___ one my hairs grey!”

The child replied innocently: “Now I know why my grandmother has only grey hair on her head.”

Most children are ___SMART___ than adults think.

Elizabeth II becomes longest-reigning U.K. monarch

On September 9, 2015, Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Her tenure of 63 years 7 months plus surpassed that of the famous Queen Victoria. In some respects Elizabeth ___MAKE___ the monarchy less formal and remote. In 1958, for example, she stopped ___ATTEND___ the annual Queen Charlotte’s Ball, where over a hundred 17- or 18-year-old girls from Britain’s richest families had traditionally presented themselves to the monarch. She also allowed television cameras limited access to her palaces and, through them, provided to the general public glimpses of her daily life and leisure interests, the ___PROMINENT___ of which was horse racing.
