The more exact and just the punishment for the committed crime is, the greater the educational value of a court sentence will be. A penalty must be imposed, first of all, according to the seriousness of the crime, the personality of the offender, the nature of his guilt and other things, important for the individual case. The fundamentals of Criminal Legislation of the Russian Federation provide the following basic penalties: – deprivation of penalty; – corrective labour without imprisonment; – disqualification from a specific office or activity; – fines and public censure. In addition to these basic penalties, the following supplementary penalties may be imposed: forfeiture of the accused man's property, deprivation of military or other ranks. Not long ago, capital punishment – a sentence of death by shooting – was an exceptional measure in our country. People were sentenced to death for very serious crimes like treason, murder and the like. Today, death penalty is replaced by lifelong imprisonment.
