QUESTIONS FOR CRITICAL THINKING AND DISCUSSION 1. Who were your childhood heroes and heroines? Why did you choose them? What cultural lessons did you learn from them? There are no doubts that every child has his/her own hero/heroine and I am not an exception. Being a child it is of great importance to have a person to look up to, who has a great influence on you as a personality, guiding your thoughts and actions. It might be predicted that most time such hero/heroine becomes someone from a family and what concerns me such heroine was my grandmother. The first reason why she is regarded in my life as a heroine is that as all heroes she dedicated her life to her family and mostly to her children and grandchildren. She sacrificed a lot to make others feel happy, so that the members of the family never faced such things as poverty, abandonment, injustice etc. In order to avoid these misfortunes sometimes she was to break social rules, to lay aside prejudices and got her own way. My grandmother taught me to love everyone and everything that surround me, to forgive those who hurt my feelings and to value those who do good and won’t desert in trouble. The next my childhood hero is a man who rescued me after an accident. But he, who knows how would things turn. I was knocked down by a motorbike, I got a wound and a concussion of the brain. And it was he who took initiative and provided help to a strange girl. Nowadays when people are so self-concentrated we should appreciate such people and they certainly deserve to be called heroes. Besides, we all can figure out quite a number of characters in Russian and Foreign literature or from movies whose acts make us think of them as heroes. Though in my life I perceive as heroes only real persons, who I take my cue from, model myself on and otherwise very thankful for. To conclude, it is of great importance to have heroes in our lives both being a child or an adult.
