Fire Appliances

Fire appliances and fixed installations. Unlike fixed fire installations, fire appliances are portable. They are also known as first-aid appliances. They need to be easily visible and accessible so they can be used when needed and are often placed in groups near the entrances in buildings or on staircase corridors in smaller areas although in large spaces they should be spread evenly throughout the building. It is better to place them in groups rather than individually as this makes them easier to see and also easier for people to find them when they carry-out checks.

They should be placed on shelves or wall brackets at a height which is easy for people to reach them, rather than placed on the floor where they might be damaged or knocked over accidentally. If they contain foam or water and the temperature is likely to be lower than 40 degrees Fahrenheit then they need protecting against freezing. Fire first aid appliances include apart from extinguishers containing liquid, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide, buckets of sand or water and hydraulic hose reels and fire blankets which may be made of wool or asbestos.

Fire brigades are equipped with some or all of the following appliances: fire engines or self-propelled pumps, which either run off the vehicles engine or have an independent power source to propel them. The pump can usually deliver between 500-1000 gallons per minute and may be centrifugal.

Turntable ladders: which are made of steel and have a main ladder with three extensions which are raised with steel cables. Water tenders: these are vehicles with a water tank which carries 4-500 gallons and are very useful in country areas where there may be no other water supply to fight fires. Other appliances include: foam tenders, pipe carriers, salvage tenders, radio vans, control units and communication units. There can also be other tenders which carry search lights and cutting gear and smoke exhausters which are not carried on other fire-fighting vehicles. Fire boats are used on rivers and dock areas and deliver large quantities of water using hose lines which are controlled by monitors.

Fixed fire installations have three categories: automatic sprinklers in buildings which start automatically if a fire occurs, drenchers, which are fixed on the outside of buildings to prevent fires spreading from neighboring buildings and can be either automatic or manually operated and water spray projector systems which are specialized fixed equipment for dealing with oil fires.
