Lesson Objectives

After completing the activities, medical English students will be able to:

· recall prior learning by taking a quiz

· skim read referral letters on Evernote

· create a checklist of essential points included in a referral letter

· write collaboratively in real time a draft letter of referral using Etherpad

· peer review group work

Warm-up and Objective Discussion (15 minutes)

Invite the learners to discuss some of the highlights of a physician’s case note. Elicit answers. Inquire who has read before a doctor’s referral letter. Request elaboration.

 

Instruct students to click on the first Evernote invitation using their mobile phones, and this link redirects them to the test which is hosted on classmarker platform. Inform students that the purpose of the quiz is to recall medical and laymen terms that are necessary to word a letter of referral. Conduct the test.

 

Discuss objectives and elicit from students the importance of knowing what to include in a referral letter. Mention that students are required to write, in real time, a referral letter in groups and peer assess the correspondence.

Model (2 minutes)

Lead students to click –once again - on the second Evernote link provided with the email. Advise them to look at all three sample referral letters.

 

Infer (5 minutes)

First, ask them to skim read those correspondences, and find what tense has been used. Also, invite students to infer the structure and organization of the written work. Furthermore, ask what do they notice in common among them. Elicit and write on board.

 

Teach (5 minutes)

Teach medical referral letter. Emphasize on the importance of being clear and concise. Also, they must word the letter considering whom they are writing to – a junior member staff will require more explanation than a specialist. If unclear of the diagnosis, a physician must admit this ignorance on the letter.
