Exercise 1. Effect of insulin and alloxan on blood glucose levels

Insulin is a peptide hormone that is produced by the B -cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Insulin has a variety of effects on metabolism in almost all tissues. The main action of insulin isthe regulation of carbohydrate metabolism, in particular, the utilization of glucose in the body.

 

Insulin increases the permeability of membranes for glucose so that cells absorb glucose from the blood, and its content there decreases.

 

Violation of insulin secretion due to destruction of B –cells -Absolute insulin deficiency - is a key link in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes. Violation of the action of insulin on tissues - relative insulin deficiency - has an important place in the development of type 2 diabetes.

 

Alloxan destroys Langerhans B cells, causing them not to produce insulin and not lower blood glucose.

1. To determine the content of glucose in the blood of healthy (NORMAL) rat (control experience).

2. Enter alloxan to the rat. To determine the content of glucose in the blood.    

3. Enter insulin to the rat. To determine the content of glucose in the blood.

4. Enter alloxan and then insulin to the rat. To determine the content of glucose in the blood.

Results. Write down in a notebook the obtained values of glucose concentration
