Education in Belarus

In Belarus, there are many higher educational institutions: universities, academies, institutes and higher colleges

Student study at university 4 or 5 years. At the end of university course Belarusian students get a Certificate of a Specialist. To get a Certificate of a Specialist, students have to pass state examinations, and to defend a diploma-work.

At the end of the second stage of higher education students get a Master’s degree.

The highest degrees are a Candidate of Science and a Doctor of Science.

A higher educational institution is headed by the Rector. The institution is divided into faculties, and faculties are divided into chairs.

Applicants are taken to Belarusian universities on the basis of entrance examination results. Most entrance exams are held in the form of centralized testing.

Students study in groups of 25 to 30 people. The academic year is divided into terms. At the end of the term, we take our exams.

 

Education in Great Britain

British people go to school from 5 till 16. School education includes 1) primary education, 2) secondary education, and 3) high school. Secondary education begins at 11. At 16, teenagers take exams for the General Certificate of Secondary Education. If you want to go to University, you have to stay at school for two more years and to pass A-level exams (Advanced-level exams).

There are about 50 universities in England, Scotland, Wales. The most famous of them are: Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, London and many others.

The university education has 3 stages. At the end of the first stage, people get Bachelor’s Degree. If they continue their education, they get Master’s Degree. At the end of the third stage they get Doctor’s Degree (Ph. D).

People are taken to British Universities on the basis of their A-level examination results at school. But before they have their examinations, they have to fill in a special form which is sent out by UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admission Service). On this form they write the names of 6 universities in order of preference. Then they send this form back to the UCAS, take their A-level exams and wait for the results.
