॥ VIVEKADHAIRYĀŚRAYA ॥



 

Introduction: The time of the composition of this work is not known, but it is mentioned in the story of Achutdas Sarswat. In this work. Shree Vallabharcharyaji deals with importance of three great and essential Virtues for living in the path of God's Grace. First is always to submit to God's will. Second is to bear with patience all sorts of persons and occassions involving physical, mental or spiritual distresses. The third is complete refuge in Shree Krushna.

 

व ि व े क ध ै र ् य े स त त ं र क ् ष र ण ी य त थ ा श ् र य ः
व ि व े क स ् त ु “ह र ि ः ” स र ् व न ि ज े च ् छ ा त ः क र ि ष ् य त ि ॥ १ ॥

vivekadhairye satataṃ rakṣ araṇ ī ya tathā ś rayaḥ
vivekastu “hariḥ ” sarva nijecchā taḥ kariṣ yati.. 1..

One should always preserve discreet understanding, patience and refuge in GOD. Discreet understanding is that GOD will do every thing according to with his own Desire (1)

 

प ् र ा र ् थ ि त े व ा त त ः क ि ं स ् य ा त ् ‌ स ् व ा म ् य भ ि प ् र ा य स ं श य ा त ् ‌ ।
स र ् व त ् र त स ् य स र ् व ं ह ि स र ् व स ा म र ् थ ् य म े व च ॥ २ ॥

prā rthite vā tataḥ kiṃ syā t svā myabhiprā yasaṃ ś ayā t.
sarvatra tasya sarvaṃ hi sarvasā marthyameva ca.. 2..

What is the use of praying for anything and thereby doubting the intentions of one's own master GOD? In fact everything, everywhere, belongs to HIM alone and has ability to give everything. (2)

 

अ भ ि म ा न स ् य स ं त ् य ा ज ् य ः स ् व ा म ् य ध ी न त ् व भ ा व न ा त ् ‌ ।
व ि श े त श ् व े द ा ज ् ञ ा स ् य ा द न ् त ः क र ण ग ो च र ा ॥ ३ ॥

त द ा व ि श े ष ग त ् य ा द ि भ ा व ् य ं भ ि न ् न ं त ु द ै ह ि क ा त ् ‌ ।

abhimā nasya saṃ tyā jyaḥ svā myadhī natva bhā vanā t.
viś etaś ve dā jñ ā syā dantaḥ karaṇ agocarā .. 3..

tadā viś eṣ agatyā di bhā vyaṃ bhinnaṃ tu daihikā t. 4(a)

With feelings of Complete dependence on the master GOD, one should completelygive up self-ego, As GOD is always dwelling in the heart of everyone. In case there is any special order from HIM relating to Himself for His sport then it should be carried out, with the help one's own body or relatives (31/2)

 

आ प द ् ‌ ग त ् य ा द ि क ा र ् य े ष ु ह ठ स ् त ् य ा ज ् य श ् च स र ् व थ ा ॥ ४ ॥

अ न ा ग ् र ह श ् च स र ् व त ् र ध र ् म ा ध र ् म ा ग ् र द र ् श न म ् ‌ ।
व ि व े क ो sय ं स म ा ख ् य ा त ो ध ै र ् य ं त ु व ि न ि र ू प ् य त े ॥ ५ ॥

ā padgatyā dikā ryeṣ u haṭ hastyā jyaś ca sarvathā .. 4..

anā grahaś ca sarvatra dharmā dharmā gradarś anam.
vivekosyaṃ samā khyā todhairyaṃ tu vinirū pyate.. 5..

In the event of any adversity, in no case one should be obstinate. After clearly observing what is worthy and" what is unworthy, one should be without insistence in all respects. The discreet understanding is conclusively spelled out. Now patience is being explained. (5)

 

त ् र ि द ु ः ख स ह न ं ध ै र ् य म ा म ृ त े ः स र ् व त ः स द ा ।
त क ् र व द ् भ े ह व भ ा व ् य ं ज ड व द ् ‌ ग ो प भ ा र ् य व त ् ‌ ॥ ६ ॥

triduḥ khasahanaṃ dhairyamā mṛ teḥ sarvataḥ sadā .
takravadbhehavabhā vyaṃ jaḍ avadgopabhā ryavat.. 6..

To endure distress of all three types from all sides and always till death is patience. Physical distress should be considered as insignificance as buttermilk. Mental afflictions should be beared with like Jadbharat and Divine pain should be suffered like Gopis. (6)

 

प ् र त ी क ा र ो य द ् ‌ च ् छ ा त ः स ि द ् ध श ् च े न ् न ा ग ् र ह ी भ व े त ् ‌ ।
भ ा र ् य ा द ी न ा ं त थ ा न ् य े ष ा म स त श ् च ा क ् र म ं स ह े त ् ‌ ॥ ७ ॥

pratī kā ro yadcchā taḥ siddhaś cennā grahī bhavet.
bhā ryā dī nā ṃ tathā nyeṣ ā masataś cā kramaṃ sahet.. 7..

If by God's will, there is any remedy for such distresses, one should try to alleviate them not be obstinate in suffering the same. One has to bear attacks from wife etc., and all others including bad persons. (7)

 

स ् व य म ि न ् द ् र ि य क ा र ् य ा ण ि क ा य व ा ङ ् ‌ म न स ा त ् य ज े त ् ‌ ।
अ श ू र े ण प ि क र ् त ् त व ् य ं स ् व स ् य ा स ा म र ् थ ् य भ ा व न ा त ् ‌ ॥ ८ ॥

svayamindriyakā ryā ṇ i kā yavā ṅ manasā tyajet.
aś ū reṇ api karttavyaṃ svasyā sā marthyabhā vanā t.. 8..

One should abandon himself all sensory activities, physically, by speech and mentally. He who is not capable to so ababdon, should do so, with awarness of his own incapability. (8)

 

अ श क ् य े ह र ि र े व ा स ् त ि स र ् व म ा श ् र य त ो भ व े त ् ‌ ।
ए त त ् स ह न म त ् र ो क ् त ् त म ा श ् र य ो sत ो न ि र ू प य े त ॥ ९ ॥

aś akye harirevā sti sarvamā ś rayatobhavet.
etatsahanamatrokttamā ś rayosto nirū payeta.. 9..

Whenever there is impossibility, HARI is always there. Everything including the possible is possible with his refuge. (8 1/2) This much has been said about patience. Henceforth Refuge is being narrated. (9)

 

ए ह ि क े प ा र ल ो क े च स र ् व थ ा श र ण ं ह र ि ः ।
द ु ः ख ह ा न ौ त थ ा प ा प े भ य े क ा म द ् य प ू र ण े ॥ १ ० ॥

ehike pā raloke ca sarvathā ś araṇ aṃ hariḥ .
duḥ khahā nau tathā pā pe bhaye kā madyapū raṇ e.. 10..

In matters relating to this world or the other world, in injuries resulting in pain, in commitment of sins, in fear, in nonfulfilment of desire etc,. Hari alone is my refuge. (10)

 

भ क ् त द ो ह े भ क ् त य भ ा व े भ क ् त ै श ् ‍ च ा प ि क ् र म े क ृ त े ।
अ श क ् य े व ा स ु श व य े व ा स र ् व थ ा श र ण ं ह र ि ः ॥ १ १ ॥

bhaktadohe bhaktayabhā ve bhaktaiś cā pi krame kṛ te.
aś akye vā suś avaye vā sarvathā ś araṇ aṃ hariḥ .. 11..

In deceiving devotees, in the absence of devotion, in insults from devotees, in matter beyond our reach or within our reach, in all these HARI alone is the refuge in every way. (11)

 

अ ह ं क ा र क ृ त े च ै व प ो ष ् य प ो ष ण र क ् ष ण े ।
प ो ष ् य ा त ि क ् र म ण े च ै व त थ ा न ् त े व ा स ् य त ि क ् र म े ॥ १ २ ॥

अ ल ौ क ि क म न ः स ि द ् ध ौ स र ् व ा र ् थ ं श र ण ं ह र ि ः ।
ए व ं च ि त ् त े स द ा भ ा व ् य ं व ा च ा च प र ि क ी र ् त य े त ् ‌ ॥ १ ३ ॥

ahaṃ kā ra kṛ te caiva poṣ ya poṣ aṇ arakṣ aṇ e.
poṣ yā tikramaṇ e caiva tathā ntevā syatikrame.. 12..

alaukika manaḥ siddhau sarvā rthaṃ ś araṇ aṃ hariḥ .
evaṃ citte sadā bhā vyaṃ vā cā ca parikī rtayet.. 13..

Further in the case of self-ego, and maintaing and protecting dependents, so also in the case of insubordination from dependents, In case of insubordination by followers and in all such situations, to accomplish divine state of mind, Hari is the refuge. One should keep this perpetually in mind and should so sing His glory aloud. (13)

 

अ न ् य स ् य भ ज न ं त त ् र स ् व त ो ग म न म े व च ।
प ् र ा र ् थ न ा क ा र ् य म ा त ् र े sप ि त त ो sन ् य त ् र व ि व र ् ज य े त ् ‌ ॥ १ ४ ॥

anyasya bhajanaṃ tatra svato gamana meva ca.
prā rthanā kā rya mā trespi tatosnyatra vivarjayet.. 14..

Worship of any one else other than Krushna or even going to other place of worship on one's own, or even just for the sake of prayer or seeking something, going elsewhere, all this three should be carefully avoided. (14)

 

अ व ि श ् व ा स ो न क र ् त ् त व ् य ः स र ् व थ ा व ा ध क स ् त ु स ः ।
ब ् र ह ् म ा स ् त ् र च ा त क ौ भ ा व ् य ौ प ् र ा प ् त ं स े व े त न ि र ् म म ः ॥ १ ५ ॥

aviś vā so na karttavyaḥ sarvathā vā dhakastu saḥ .
brahmā stra cā takau bhā vyau prā ptaṃ seveta nirmamaḥ .. 15..

One should never distrust GOD as that is always an obstacle. One should remember instance of Brahmastra and the bird Chataka without fail, and should selflessly continue to perform divine service of GOD with whatever is available. (15)

 

य थ ा क थ ं च ि त ् ‌ क ा र ् य ा ण ि क ु र ् य ा द ु च ् च ा व च ा न ् य प ि ।
क ि ं व ा प ् र ो क ् त े न ब ह ु न ा श र ण ं भ ा व य े द ् भ र ि म ् ‌ ॥ १ ६ ॥

yathā kathaṃ cit kā ryā ṇ i kuryā duccā vacā nyapi.
kiṃ vā proktena bahunā ś araṇ aṃ bhā vayedbharim.. 16..

One should somehow perform his duties whether high or low. What is the use of saying anything more? Always think about refuge of HARI in all respects. (16)

 

ए व म ा श ् र य ण ं प ् र ो क ् त ं स र ् व े ष ा ं स र ् व द ा ह ि त म ् ‌ ।
क ल ौ भ क ् त य ा द ि म ा र ् ग ा ह ि द ु स ् स ा ध ् य ा इ त ि म े म त ि ः ॥ १ ७ ॥

evamā ś rayaṇ aṃ proktaṃ sarveṣ ā ṃ sarvadā hitam.
kalau bhaktayā dimā rgā hi dussā dhyā iti me matiḥ .. 17..

Thus all is said about refuge; and that is always for the good of everyone. In the Kali age,, paths wherein devotion is principal, and others, are difficult to follow. This is my thinking. (17)

 

 

॥ इ त ि श ् र ी व ल ् ल भ ा च र ् य प ् र ो क ् त ं व ि व ै क ध ै र ् य ा श ् र य ं स म ् प ू र ् ण म ् ‌ ॥

.. iti ś rī vallabhā caryaproktaṃ vivaikadhairyā ś rayaṃ sampū rṇ am.. (8)
