There are almost 400 million people in the world who speak Spanish as their mother tongue. Spanish is, after English, the most widely spoken language in the world.

La Ciudad de Mé xico - Mexico City. The largest city in the world, with some 20 million people. It was once the Aztec island-city of Tenochtitlan, surrounded by a lake. Salamanca, in Castile, the heartland of old Spain, is something of a custodian of the Spanish language - or, as it's also known, Castilian - el castellano.

The University of Salamanca's summer school is world famous for the teaching of Spanish. The director, Pepe Asencio, has a dream.

What kind of Spanish should people learn?

Teacher: Si vienen aquí logicamente van a aprender el castellano de Castilla. Si van al sur van a aprender probablemente la acentuació n y la entonació n andaluza. Pero por la misma razó n si alguien va a cualquier paí s hispanoamericano va a aprender el acento de allí. Es españ ol en todo caso, o sea que, no hay ningú n problema.

Pepe Asencio: De hecho yo insisto junto con la Real Academia Españ ola en que todos debemos estar de acuerdo, en que no hay diferencias que sean notorias, en que todos tenemos que estar de acuerdo en que estamos hablando una misma lengua y esa lengua, nos guste o no nos guste, les guste o no les guste a otros, se llama españ ol.

The varieties of Spanish spoken round the world come from Castilian, which in turn comes from Latin and originated in the old kingdom of Castile. Spain's capital, Madrid, is in the centre of what was Castile.

Most of Spain was ruled by the Moors for some 800 years, and the Arab influence still remains - especially in Andalucí a.

The province of La Mancha is the setting for one of the classics of world literature: Don Quijote.

People in Cataluñ a, and its capital Barcelona, still speak Catalan, as well as Spanish.

The Basques are just as proud of their unique language and culture.

Protecting countries like Costa Rica from the ravages of mass tourism isn't easy. It's a problem common to many Latin American countries. For Carlos Alberto the answer lies in education.

Perhaps the best-known dream of all... is the American dream.

It's now also the Hispanic dream: there are some 30 million Hispanics in the United States - and they don't all speak English. New York community leader Francisco Dí az is of Puerto Rican origin.

Francisco Dí az: Bueno el sueñ o mí o es que los hispanos puedan tener una mejor educació n para que puedan desarrollar oportunidades para las generaciones que vengan... que sean dueñ os de negocios, que tengan sus propias casas, que tengan el poder de determinar su destino.

Which language does Francisco think will be the strength of the future?

One thing is certain. For many millions of people the world over the language of the future will continue to be Spanish - El Españ ol.
